I dont know about anyone on here, but i find all the music available for kids really poor - i find it next to impossible (other than classical music) to find some really good soothing music for my kids to nodd off too or play in the car (without having to trawl through albums to find something that works)......i heard there was a beatles orchestral versions cd which sound interesting - but anyone know of any recommended contemporary lullabies - or is it only me who finds that most of the advertised music for kids as annoying as i do.........

I have nothing to add, but to say that Discowife, I think I love you!

Diziet · 27/10/2010 22:46

@ sillymoo123 - I have recently purchased a cd by a duo called the Crayonettes called 'Playing Out - music for children and robots'. It's very good indeed!!! Kind of folky, funky, electronic kind of stuff!! Smile Song on there called 'Disco Teeth' that DS1 loves, and a track called 'Rainy Day' which is just lovely!

AnyFuleKno · 27/10/2010 22:55

vashti bunyan (well not new but not primarily for children). Her songs are lovely and dreamlike. DD who is almost three also likes Peggy Seeger, Burl Ives and Joanna Newsom which I have forced encouraged her to listen to.

I've got this cd by Thula Mama. Beautiful a capella lullabies Smile

AnyFuleKno · 27/10/2010 22:58

oh is Beatles 'Love' album what you're thinking of in the OP?

GMajor7DeadlySins · 27/10/2010 23:03

Another vote for St Judy's Comet here. 'You Can Close Your Eyes' by James Taylor is also lovely.

AnyFuleKno · 27/10/2010 23:12

Grown up songs which children love:

Paul Simon 'at the zoo'

'I'm sticking with you' The Velvet Underground

'We're going to be friends' the white stripes

'Monkey Man' The specials (ok not a lullaby type but I'm getting carried away now)

Mr Tambourine Man - the byrds

We love to boogie - t-rex

and finally, and inexplicably, Jolene by Dolly Parton which small children seem to love

scottishmummy · 28/10/2010 00:06

Ha ha! You're so right about Jolene! My 10 month old DS also loves Dolly's 9-5. Hell, who doesn't?! Grin

thecaptaincrocfamily · 28/10/2010 20:55

DD1 who is 4 likes me to sing 'Castle on a Cloud' from Les Miserable at bed time!

badcoverversion · 28/10/2010 21:05

I have a nice little album called "Songs for the young at Heart" featuring interpretations of popular childrens songs and lullabies by the likes of Bonnie Prince Billy, Stuart Murdoch (Belle & Sebastian), Cerys Matthews and Kurt Wagner (Lampchop). It also has Jarvis Cocker reading The Lion & Albert and a board book fixed within the sleeve. I actually bought it a couple of years before falling pregnant but it's still available in larger stores like Fopp and HMV.

Bruce Haack is an electronic musician who wrote specifically for kids. He's pretty progressive and 'far out' but well worth looking into.

I'd also recommend looking into bands like Animal Collective and Panda Bear. Sung Tongs for example, features a lot of soothing but vibrant music.

badcoverversion · 28/10/2010 21:07

Oh and Iron & Wine...check them out.

fifitot · 28/10/2010 21:46

'Your Star Will Shine' by The Stone Roses - not sure of intent but it's a lovely soothing song and 'Kooks' by David Bowie which I think is a lovely song about being parents.

fifitot · 28/10/2010 21:57

Will you stay in our Lovers' Story
If you stay you won't be sorry
'Cause we believe in you
Soon you'll grow so take a chance
With a couple of Kooks
Hung up on romancing

We bought a lot of things to keep you warm and dry
And a funny old crib on which the paint won't dry
I bought you a pair of shoes
A trumpet you can blow
And a book of rules
On what to say to people when they pick on you
'Cause if you stay with us you're gonna be pretty Kookie too

And if you ever have to go to school
Remember how they messed up this old fool
Don't pick fights with the bullies or the cads
'Cause I'm not much cop at punching
Other people's Dads
And if the homework brings you down
Then we'll throw it on the fire
And take the car downtown

Will you stay in our Lovers' Story
If you stay you won't be sorry
'Cause we believe in you
Soon you'll grow so take a chance
With a couple of Kooks
Hung up on romancing

Awwwwwwwww - think it is sooooooo sweet.

fifitot · 28/10/2010 21:58

Whoops - didn't mean to copy and past the whole thing!

AnyFuleKno has just pinched most of my suggestions. I love Vashti Bunyan.

I used to love Captain Beaky and his Band when I was little. Still love it - the one about Blanche the baby owl always has me in floods.

badcoverversion · 29/10/2010 10:43

AnyFuleKno, I missed your post but Vashti Bunyan is a great suggestion.
