to not iron?

I was just over at my neighbour's house who I don't know that well but we both have DC very similar ages (2.5 and 4 months). Her baby was sick on a top so she whipped it off and grabbed a top from a pile of clean washing in the kitchen, saying 'sorry, it's not ironed but I can't be bothered to go upstairs, I wouldn't normally put her in something not ironed...' and actually made a bit of a thing about it! I commented, 'don't worry, all my kids clothes look like that, I never iron!' and she said 'oh no, I wouldn't take her out of the house like this, I'd be ashamed' Shock

Surely most people don't iron kids' clothes, right?! They are so small and only worn for 2 secs! I actually don't iron anything, DH does his own work shirts about once a week and if I have anything of mine that needs ironing (v rarely) I might ask him to do it but that's about it, kids' stuff never gets ironed.

YANBU.

I do believe i own a pressy thing somewhere and i have on occasion been known to use it.

But only on occasion.

Squitten · 26/10/2010 17:44

YANBU

I also never iron anything if I can at all help it - hate doing it! I don't have a dryer so everything is hung on lines and the worst of the creases fall out. Certainly have never ironed anything belonging to DS!

YANBU!
I don't understand when SAHMs iron, either. It's OK if all your children are at school, but mine are around at home, so highly dangerous to have the iron out. Perhaps if you have angel children who all nap at the same time.... (mine don't nap at all).

Anyway, the point is that I have 101 things to do when they go to bed, chief of which is have some kind of adult conversation with DH to keep our marriage going. No way I'm wasting that time on ironing!

SheWillBeLoved · 26/10/2010 17:46

YANBU, there's nothing I hate more than ironing. Baby clothes especially. I take them out of the dryer whilst still hot and fold straight away to minimize creasing [slattern emoticon]

no you are not, and there's a lot to be said for sensible folding.

My sister irons just everything, and goes on smugging about it, I once said 'nah DDI, don't do ironing' and she said 'yeah, it shows' Shock

i perfected the folding after that.

with school shirts i show these the iron while they're still wet then put on hanger to dry, even my sister can't spot that i've short cut.

greenbananas · 26/10/2010 17:52

I never iron. What on earth is the point?

My sister irons everything, including all the kids' underwear (she has 4 DCs) and it takes her ages. I asked her once why she bothered and she replied, rather smugly, that I would change my mind if I ever had children of my own. But I haven't Grin

greenbananas · 26/10/2010 17:55

My sister would agree about being 'ashamed' of children's clothes being unironed. Her kids always look immaculate and she is forever telling them not to get dirty.

I would actually be ashamed if my DS was so perfectly dressed that he looked like he never had any fun.

pigsinmud · 26/10/2010 18:00

No yanbu. I never iron. Take things off line or out of tumble dryer and fold neatly and place in airing cupboard. They do not need ironing then. Dh sometimes irons a concert shirt, but not often.

Dd2 Pointed at the ironing board the other day (it leans against a wall in our bedroom) and asked if it was a surf board?! That shows you how often we iron in this house.

togarama · 26/10/2010 18:00

YANBU.

I iron shirts for work only on as "as needed" basis. Ironing is very boring. If I were richer I'd pay someone else to do even this little bit for me...

duchesse · 26/10/2010 18:02

Some people are so retentive about ironing everything- my own sister irons underwear ffs. Me, I iron virtually nothing. Certainly not on a weekly or daily basis. Life is too short. I occasionally will iron the odd smart thing, maybe once in six months. The children iron their own stuff if they want it ironed. I consider that shaking things as they come out of the machine before they go on the line, then giving them a 10 mn whizz in the drier, is the job done.

Ironing is just a big waste of time afaic.

Clary · 26/10/2010 18:04

Those of you who don't iron cannot have DC in secondary.

The state of DS1's shirts once off the line. No way would I send him to school in one unironed.

I like ironing tho so that's fine. Grin

Joolyjoolyjoo · 26/10/2010 18:04

Wow- looks like I am a wierdo then!

I didn't iron when the children were very small, but when dd1 went to school, I started ironing her uniform. And DHs shirts. And then everything that wasn't ironed looked terrible in the drawer with all the lovely ironed stuff, so....I now iron everything Blush

"no-iron" school uniforms are a myth, as far as I can see- they never look ironed, so end up ironing them anyway. Sad, I know, but gives me a sense of satisfaction Blush

Oh, and I do it at weekends, usually while we are all snuggled up watching a film or DVD

LadyBaiter · 26/10/2010 18:05

What's an iron?

TubbyDuffs · 26/10/2010 18:08

I have piles of clothes that need ironing, but never actually get round to it. I iron on a need to wear basis.

I am planning on just sending everything out in one go to get it up to date and then I will stay on top of it (honest).

I send my husband's shirts out for ironing, I iron the kids stuff and mine, but wouldn't iron underwear or pyjamas.

I actually quite like ironing when there isn't too much sat staring at me.

RiojaLover75 · 26/10/2010 18:12

I don't iron anything unless it's for a smart event. My DS is at a school where they wear polo shirts, not real shirts so I can get away with that. DH irons his own :o

I'm sure my time will come and I will have to start ironing every week......

MrsTumbles · 26/10/2010 18:17

I never used to iron my DD's clothes, then one day my IL's had a massive go at me telling me that they were ashamed to be seen with her Shock!

Background, she had been in hospital so I had not slept for 4 straight nights, then when she came out I had to return to work on 6am shifts, but she was keeping me up most of the night as being in hospital had affected her sleep pattern, so they offered to take her overnight and the clothes I sent were not ironed. Instead of just ironing them, they kept her in her PJ's all day to keep the 'crumpled' items as evidence against me.

The next time they saw her they commented on how nicely pressed her clothes were and I happily replied that my Mother had been doing my ironing to help out (she's strange and lusts after ironing my DH's shirts :)) It did affect me though and I tend iron most 'visible' items nowadays, hating every second of it.

potplant · 26/10/2010 18:20

After reading a particularly militant anti ironing thread on here a few months ago I decided to stop ironing. I can't believe how much of a difference it has made. I don't have piles and piles of clothes cluttering up the place as I put them away as soon as they are done.

I don't care. The DCs certainly don't care. DH makes a few comments but I don't care about that either.

from ironing on name tags at the beginning of the school year I haven't ironed anything at all for months.

Faaamily · 26/10/2010 18:22

I iron the bare minimum - a couple of pairs of DS's really stiff jeans and a few tops of my own that need ironing. DH irons his own shirts. That's it.

I decided at an early age that on Sunday evenings, I would NOT be staring down a mammoth family pile of ironing, but would be tucked up in bed with a glass of wine and a good ITV drama premiere to contend with Wink

DemonChild · 26/10/2010 18:23

The only time (in my adult life that I ironed anything, it was one of DH's work shirts.

He got sacked the day her wore it.

I took the hint and and now DH does all the ironing and hoovering. (I put the hoovering in because I really hate that too Grin)

DemonChild · 26/10/2010 18:23

He, not her, oops.

PutTheKettleOn · 26/10/2010 18:45

glad it's not just me then Grin

I do concede that once they are in school I might have to iron the odd school shirt. I figure I'll just slip them in with DH's work shirts for him to do, he'll never notice...

OP posts:
Seona1973 · 26/10/2010 18:52

I iron dh's shirts and the kids polo shirts (just on one side) and dd's pleated skirts. Everything else just gets put away.

Roxylox · 26/10/2010 19:06

Luckily DH doesn't need to wear shirts to work and for my 2DCs at secondary, I take M&S at their non-iron word, finish off shirts in the tumble and put straight on to hangers.

Each to their own. May be a bit crumpled sometimes but I'm happy Grin
