to not iron?

I was just over at my neighbour's house who I don't know that well but we both have DC very similar ages (2.5 and 4 months). Her baby was sick on a top so she whipped it off and grabbed a top from a pile of clean washing in the kitchen, saying 'sorry, it's not ironed but I can't be bothered to go upstairs, I wouldn't normally put her in something not ironed...' and actually made a bit of a thing about it! I commented, 'don't worry, all my kids clothes look like that, I never iron!' and she said 'oh no, I wouldn't take her out of the house like this, I'd be ashamed' Shock

Surely most people don't iron kids' clothes, right?! They are so small and only worn for 2 secs! I actually don't iron anything, DH does his own work shirts about once a week and if I have anything of mine that needs ironing (v rarely) I might ask him to do it but that's about it, kids' stuff never gets ironed.

AIBU?

YANBU, can't see how anyone would have the time to iron baby/kids clothes, and they are in the wash so quickly anyway.

We own an iron...and I stopped using it about a year after we moved in together. It's for DH's work shirts only, and I don't do them as he is so fussy!

My ironing board broke last week. It has lasted well because of the infrequent use. It was a wedding present (first husband) in 1983. Morbid but for Hallowe'en - the ironing board outlived two husbands and a fiance!!

AlpinePony · 27/10/2010 08:27

YANBU - the only thing I've ironed in years are my skis to wax them.

On the other hand, am in a relationship with an ex-forces man. They love ironing. The sad freaks.

mummytime · 27/10/2010 08:30

DCs in secondary, occasionally iron their shirts, but usually if they are the last one, and they've been folded by kids (eg. dropped on floor when clear and now look like a rag). DH sometimes irons in foreign hotels, when he has jet lag. I occassionally iron his dress shirt.

I have a friend who works (2 part-time jobs) and was shocked to see her ironing pants. I really don't get it.

I am proud that I am doing my bit for the environment and not wasting lots of electricity ironing all our clothes. Grin

pommedeterre · 27/10/2010 08:38

AIBU for thinking that first time baby is sick on clean clothes I just wipe her down? Second vom on them she prob gets changed...
So as for not ironing them...

deaddei · 27/10/2010 08:39

I love ironing.
But would never have "thoughts" about someone who didn't.

TrillianSlasher · 27/10/2010 08:41

If you don't iron you are scruffy and will be judged by those who do iron.

If you do iron you are wasting your time and will be judged by those who do not iron.

If you sometimes iron you will have things thrown at you for being a fence-sitter.

Have I covered everything?

DialMforMother · 27/10/2010 08:42

In the interests of pointing out how undomesticated I am being supportive when dd was two weeks old, MIL said to me 'you can let some things go you know - like don't iron socks and pants and just wash your paintwork down every couple of weeks'.

Passive aggressive much?

bintofbohemia · 27/10/2010 08:50

YANBU - I iron school uniforms only.

lowrib · 27/10/2010 08:56

"I am proud that I am doing my bit for the environment and not wasting lots of electricity ironing all our clothes."

Ooh great point! Grin

another non ironer from a dynasty of non-ironers. my mum used to only iron the triangle of shirt visible beneath the v neck jumper of my uniform, reasonng that the creases will drop out with body heat. she was right and i quote her still..
funnily enough the times i have ironed i've really enjoyed it! but i've never done a pile only something requiring immediate wear.

apart from when i was pregnant and ironed all dd's little clothes and even a double duvet cover! actually it was so nice ironed but i just can't imagine when i would iron. people say they do it whilst watching tv but i like to sit on sofa drinking wine and t'internetting so..no chance.

luckily it's just accepted as one of those things i don't do..like washing up too.

AnnieLoBOOseder · 27/10/2010 22:46

The only part of DD1's school uniform that looks even remotely scruffy when not ironed is her two 100% cotton summer dresses. And I find that if I smooth those down with my hands (hand-ironing.... can I patent it?) then dry on a hanger they come out pretty well.

The rest of her dresses and shirts look fine un-ironed.

florencerusty · 27/10/2010 22:58

I iron everything anyone wears, barring undies. I hate ironing but I hate creased clothes much more!

onceamai · 27/10/2010 22:59

Sorry but I like everything ironed except towels and underwear. Just doesn't feel right otherwise. And I like to see the linen all crisp and neatly arranged on the shelves. And I like all the ends of the hangers to face left. Smile

chillipickle · 28/10/2010 00:01

YANBU! In our house it's known as 'Daddy's iron', as it's only ever used by OH for his work shirts.

VinegaRigamorTits · 28/10/2010 00:07

well its up to you if you want to look scruffy and crumpled

personally i prefer to look neat so i iron

lowrib · 28/10/2010 00:41
