to not iron?

I was just over at my neighbour's house who I don't know that well but we both have DC very similar ages (2.5 and 4 months). Her baby was sick on a top so she whipped it off and grabbed a top from a pile of clean washing in the kitchen, saying 'sorry, it's not ironed but I can't be bothered to go upstairs, I wouldn't normally put her in something not ironed...' and actually made a bit of a thing about it! I commented, 'don't worry, all my kids clothes look like that, I never iron!' and she said 'oh no, I wouldn't take her out of the house like this, I'd be ashamed' Shock

Surely most people don't iron kids' clothes, right?! They are so small and only worn for 2 secs! I actually don't iron anything, DH does his own work shirts about once a week and if I have anything of mine that needs ironing (v rarely) I might ask him to do it but that's about it, kids' stuff never gets ironed.

we are a zero iron household

all clothes (except interview shirts of course) are chosen not to need ironing, we just hang things up carefully.

bad for the environment and a waste of my time if anyone asks why i havent ironed my tshirt

pommedeterre · 26/10/2010 21:09

Iron used exclusively for DH's work shirts. I have not ironed an item of my own clothing since I gave up my holiday job during uni at a pub.
As for the IL story further up - my reaction would be to iron LESS MrsTumbles. Knobheads.

MoralDefective · 26/10/2010 21:13

We have an iron
I do'nt use it
Anyone is welcome to use it
DS2recently said to newish friends of mine, whilst we were talking about ironingConfused
'Mum,you only ever iron the curtains do'nt you'?
I'd recently washed his curtains and spent an hour swearing happily ironing them.

dementedma · 26/10/2010 21:18

wow, all these non-ironing slatterns, i've found you at last Grin
I iron once a week on a Sunday - DCs school uniform, DH's jeans and my work wear.
Won't do bedding, towels, underwear, small bits and pieces or anything i can get away with, but won't send the kids to schools all crumpled.

RichardArmitagesSpeedos · 26/10/2010 21:40

I have a foot in both camps. Either I can give full rein to my slutty relaxed tendancies - not iron, look a bit rumpled and have a guilt complex. OR I can pay someone else to do it for me, look smart and have a guilt complex. On balance I go for the latter.

MoralDefective · 26/10/2010 21:44

To be honest,i do'nt care enough to pay someone to do my ironing....even if i could afford it(which i ca'nt)
However......if i did care enough(and could afford it) then YES,i would pay!
I loathe ironing.

ForMashGetSmash · 26/10/2010 22:02

I used to iron ALL dcs stuff...when she was all I had...now I iron nothing unless it looks like it's been stuffed down the back of the sofa! I have 2 dcs....YANBU!

poobumfartbollocks · 26/10/2010 22:21

I have 4 DC's although two are now off at uni and only have 2 DD's at home (and even they are only here half time since I havve shared custody with the ex)

I iron as little as I can get away with.

Shake and fold, shake and fold.

Never ever do underwear, pjs, bedding or anything else I can get away with

RoseByAnyOtherName · 26/10/2010 22:28

I iron only for weddings and funerals. I even hate getting the iron out for Hama beads.

New clothes do look lovely when they are ready-ironed from the shop, but I try to only buy clothes which won't need ironing.

On a related subject, I was very proud when DD1, then aged about 6, innocently asked 'what's dusting Mummy?'

Ironing is a feminist issue.

pinkyp · 26/10/2010 22:56

do people actually iron bedding? And if so why? Surely it'll be creased again by morning?

AnnieLoBOOseder · 26/10/2010 23:00

See, that's why I send DD1 to after-school club.... so she can do hama beads there and I never have to even look at an iron! Grin

23balloons · 26/10/2010 23:09

YANBU very rarely iron anything except dh's work shirts. As somebody has already said"life is too short!" Why waste time ironing?

Onetoomanycornettos · 26/10/2010 23:15

I don't iron my children's polo shirts for school, and they don't look crumpled. Far from it, they look very smart. Mysteriously any minor crumples drop out on the walk to school, it's magic. I then hang the shirt/skirt up (if clean, not for my grubby DD2) for the next day and repeat. No need to get all hot and bothered. I do that for cotton dresses, the odd shirt of mine and interview clothes about once a month, if not less.

Timeforanap · 26/10/2010 23:44

"An iron is what you stick hama beads together with...

Isn't it?"

LOL!

We (mostly DH) iron a)his work stuff, so he is taken seriously, b)school uniform, so they are treated well (there are studies showing correlations between childrens' appearance and their treatment from teachers. Seriously.) c) my SAHM clothes, to keep me sane.

We DO NOT iron childrens' other clothes or DH's home clothes. DH thinks we should wash them alot less too!

I love the smell of ironing, if I didn't have loads of other things to do I wouldn't mind. I certainly wouldn't let it cut into my evening though.

MoralDefective · 27/10/2010 00:05

What are hama beads?

zoley · 27/10/2010 00:15

Brilliant thread, I HATE ironing, also a fan of the 'shake it out and hang it carefully' school of ironing avoidance. I don't enjoy it, the clothes don't look very much different. DH irons his work shirts as and when needed and that's the only ironing that gets done around here Grin.

Looking forward to teaching the kids these domestic avoidance techniques when older instead of 'back first, then sleeves, cuffs, collar and front'

anonymosity · 27/10/2010 01:11

YA SOOOO NBU

I am giving the ironing board to a charity pick up this week. I'm sick of it staring at me, its been staring at me unused for about 13 yrs.

YeahBut · 27/10/2010 01:24

I only ever iron when I've bought a pair of frivolous and ridiculously high heeled shoes. I wear them with jeans so I can say, quite truthfully, that they are practical for day to day wear and that they do go with anything, even jeans.

lowrib · 27/10/2010 01:55

Conversation from my house earlier this year:

Me: Do we have an iron?
DP: I think so
Me: Do you know where it is?
DP: No idea

This made me smile at the time Grin

We did find the iron, but we moved a few months ago and I have no idea where it is now.

Life is too short!

3thumbedwitch · 27/10/2010 02:37

I don't iron unless absolutely necessary (a rarety). All of our clothes get hung up to dry, on the line or an airer, including DH's work shirts (they go on hangers). He then gets to decide whether or not they are too creased to wear - and if they need ironing, he irons them as and when needed.

Everything else gets put straight away.

Actually, years ago I made a policy to never have an ironing pile - everything just gets put away whether or not it really should be ironed - and then gets ironed just before it is worn. This is because anythign I have that actually requires ironing will crease again in the wardrobe/drawers so will need ironing before wearing anyway - absolutely NO point in ironing it twice!!

eclipse · 27/10/2010 04:38

I am proud that my ds sees ironing as man's work. He's never seen me iron (because I don't) but his Dad irons his shirts. One of my brothers flew on the red-eye from New York to my sister's wedding and ironed his suit under his mattress. Style.

sunnydelight · 27/10/2010 04:51

YANBU. I loathe ironing so only iron school uniform (day by day), though I've recently realised to my joy that DD's school dresses don't need ironing if I hang them to dry carefully. DH does his own shirts and will do the uniforms if he has time.
