bar mitzvah advice needed

actually there is nothing unreasonable about this at all DS has been invited to give best friend speech at good friends bar mitzvah. We have been invited along as well, we are delighted. We are Catholic and really would like some advice on what to expect and is a best friend speech like a best man's speech.

also ideas for a suitable present would be handy.

Yes - like a best mans speech so funny and personal (but hopfully nothing too saucy at 13 years of Age)

Someone else will do a religious type speech so no worries on that

Money usually a most welcome gift

Money in multiples of 18 as this has special significance in the Jewish faith. It is the numerical value of the Hebrew word "chai," meaning life.
I love a Bar or Bat Mitzvah and fortunately we live in a Jewish neighbourhood. They are so much fun and so moving. A best friend speech is definitely what Rubyslippers said. Include some fun anecdotes about what they enjoy doing together and then try and tie it all together with a comment about growing-up, accepting responsibility etc.

I always find money a bit impersonal (although much appreciated by a 13 yr old boy!) - Bar Mitzvah gifts will be treasured for life so something lasting and meaningful would be fitting.

Having said this though, my DP received some Disney shares from a family friend at his Bar Mitzvah, which I thought that was a really nice touch.

what nice comments, all we've got to do is write it now. and decide what suitable multiple of 18 is appropriate, and I think will include small gift as well.
