to want a real fur coat

choufleur · 24/10/2010 20:32

I don't me made from baby seals or anything endangered but a rabbit one maybe.

I eat rabbit, so can't see the problem with wearing a coat made from a by product.

sophiebbb · 25/10/2010 12:23

I live in Italy and rabbit fur coats are EVERYWHERE. It is really common.

The culture here is that the older ladies do wear the "more traditional" fur - ie animals other than rabbits. Horrible IMO - both the ethics and the 'look'.

But for younger Italians rabbit fur is everywhere. In all different colours and styles - capes, little shoulder covers, scarfs etc. All modern designs.

I am interested in this thread because I really want to know what the difference is between wearing rabbit fur and leather boots....

Butterbur · 25/10/2010 12:35

I fail to see the difference between inhumane farming methods for rearing fur animals, and inhumane farming methods for rearing meat animals.

We don't need to wear fur, but we also don't need to eat meat.

It is a hypocritical distinction.

OpensCryptandRises · 25/10/2010 12:38

Sophiebbb - The main difference between rabbit fur and leather is likely to be the way the animal was killed. Neither are genuine by-products as in the case of leather, it makes the meat industry viable or in the case of expensive leather it was bred for that purpose.

I'm another vegan, for the record but tbh the thought of wearing dead things makes my skin crawl regardless of the ethics.

Bucharest · 25/10/2010 12:44

sophiebb, the difference is that people generally look nice in leather boots, whilst I've yet to see anyone (as has been said from page 1 of this AIBU onwards) who looks anything other than 3 stone heavier, and 20 yrs older than they really are in a fur coat. (even a fake fur one)

stuffedmk · 25/10/2010 12:45

I have a vintage fur and I love it...Admittedly it didn't occur to me that it was real when I bought it, I mean it's obvious really but I just assumed it would only be fake. I don't think I would wear a new one and to be honest if you really want a fur you could get an unwanted vintage with a bit of searching.
I don't think anyone who eats meat/uses leather can say YABU
So I have to say YANBU

sophiebbb · 25/10/2010 12:57

OK - on the "way the animals were killed" point I buy it - if that is really the case.

  1. Do they use the rabbits that give their fur for meat? They eat a lot of rabbit in Italy...
  1. How do they kill the rabbit that gives it fur vs the animals I eat for meat or the animals whose skins make my leather boots. Is it less humane. No opinions here - facts only.

On the "looking nice" point. That comes down to personal opinion. I have seen some gorgeous rabbit fur items for the first time ever (it is my first year in Italy) that certainly would not make anyone look 20 years older. All different colours and shapes. Not big bulky brown fur coats.

I guess that is why I am interested in all this.

pastaplease · 25/10/2010 14:38

As said on previous posts, Sophie:

  1. the same rabbits are NOT used for fur and for meat.
  1. this is how the rabbits are killed

Looking 'nice', eh? Yeah, well worth torture and brutal killing.

DialMforMother · 25/10/2010 14:42

Sophie are you 'interested in this thread' enough to ACTUALLY READ IT?

anonymosity · 25/10/2010 15:52

I have an ancient mink cape worn only at winter weddings. I think its 1940s - and you can tell from the pale blue lining / label. I wouldn't buy new fur for ethical reasons.

BoffinMum · 25/10/2010 16:04

Ach, they throw paint and stick chewing gum on coats because they are bullies at heart and they are having a go at women disguised as being concerned for animals.

Can't imagine them doing this to big beefy bouncers. Or food buyers for Tesco.

Bonsoir · 25/10/2010 16:06

The minute the temperature hits O°, women in Paris are all out in beautiful fur coats. The bus is full of them Smile

GoreRenewed · 25/10/2010 16:10

If you can guarantee the beasties that died didn't die horribly (and the way fur-bearing animals die for their fur tends to be particularly horrible) then go ahead. But you won't look as good as a rabbit does in it.

BoffinMum · 25/10/2010 16:13

They indeed died horribly. We know this. But
it is not all about vanity and whether we look good in them. We are simply using them up.

My Victorian piano has ivory keys and I am sure as hell not going to prise them up and replace them with plastic. Entrenched, extreme activist views get many people's back up, methinks. Especially when they are underpinned by a kind of counter-logic.

GoreRenewed · 25/10/2010 16:30

But that's a different argument boffin. The OP wants a new fur coat not an old one where the damage is already done.

"and they are having a go at women disguised as being concerned for animals."

Oh so feminism stops you caring about animals? I hate this sort of argument! Can we not critise fur-coat wearers because they are women?

MaimAndKilloki · 25/10/2010 16:37

Gore the argument has moved on, some people have been saying that vintage fur is as bad as new fur.

GoreRenewed · 25/10/2010 16:39

Oh i see.

Sorry.

My gran had an old mink coat. It stank of moth balls. Wouldn't have worn it if you paid me. But no, it's not as bad but just not to my taste.

whomovedmychocolate · 25/10/2010 16:58

In fur coats on a bus ? Shock

What is wrong with this picture? Grin

JessRabbit · 25/10/2010 17:04

Why do you think rabbit is acceptable but baby seals are not?

TheSmallClanger · 25/10/2010 17:08

YANBU. Fur is crap because:

  1. Makes you look fat and yeti-like.
  1. Not ethically produced - meat and fur animals tend to be different strains, and bred on different farms.
  1. Smells like a wet dog when wet.
  1. Not the warmest thing you can get. I've travelled far above the Arctic circle and seen a hell of a lot of polar fleece and GoreTex, but no fur coats.
Discowife · 25/10/2010 17:09

Clearly it is because rabbits aren't as cute as lickle baby seals. Will be nice when all animals are given some thought and consideration no matter where they land on the cuteness scale

lovingthesun · 25/10/2010 18:01

I think if you watched animals being slaughtered for fur - particulary the animals in China - & were happy to wear fur...well, I'd say there was something wrong with you.

Yes, fur is beautiful, but the horrific & unnecessary suffering involved turns my stomach.

choufleur · 25/10/2010 18:24

Erm never said I wanted a new fur coat. I'm actually after a vintage one but there you go jumping to conclusions.

I don't eat baby seal. I eat rabbit and cows (although I now know the same ones I eat aren't made into my boots/shoes - I will still wear leather boots/shoes though).

I really don't see how wearing something that has been dead for XX many years is the same as new fur.

OP posts:
minimathsmouse · 25/10/2010 18:34

I have a rabbit coat that was my Grandmothers. I wouldn't buy a new fur, I just happen to have one. Should I burn it? Should I give it to choufleur? Bin it? Sell it? What would the animal lovers have you do with it?

Real fur feels light to wear and it is warm. I can see why people would be tempted. I don't wear it, I feel a bit silly wearing it to do the shopping! or run the kids around.

I don't really object to fur, its natural, I would rather 60 dead rabbits than the noxious gases created by making fake fur.
