i don't want to rebalance the radiators

Mrs Stubborn says that the plumber she knows says that 'ANY FULE can rebalance their own radiators' and therefore why don't I hurry up and rebalance ours? and then perhaps the radiator in the kitchen will warm up properly and why haven't I done it already, she asked me a week ago, and it's cold in the kitchen.

I have turned various stop valves on various rads up or down a bit but whenever one rad gets hot another one gets cold.

AIBU if I wait till after half term, and she goes back to work... and get a plumber in?

No.

Or tell her to do it instead.

I don't think the innate knowledge of minor plumbing procedures in shipped with the penis.

a plumber to rebalance radiators? that's a bit weird. it just means turning the hot ones down a bit until the cold one gets hotter

stubbornhubby · 22/10/2010 15:58

southeastastra, yes, that's what mrs stubborn says

Bleed the radiators.

That's what works for dh me anyway[hblush]

SecrestName999 · 22/10/2010 16:13

Never heard of rebalancing them....bleeding them yes (which any fool can indeed do)...but rebalancing???

JaxTellersOldLady · 22/10/2010 16:15

no idea what rebalancing is, but I bleed the rads in our house, it is a five minute job.

And I aint no fool! Wink

BaggyCoconut · 22/10/2010 16:22

I can bleed a radiator....no idea what rebalancing one is though.

I think either Mrs Stubborn should do it as she seems to know how, or just get someone in to do it for you.

I could perfectly well paint the hall (my DP does not decorate, and I wouldn't let him having seen a past attempt Grin, however the ceiling goes all the way to upstrairs celing height and I haven't got the right ladders, and TBH I dont fancy doing it so I am getting a bloke in. If DP dred object he would get the "look"

Balancing the radiators is easy but takes a long time and is a pain in the @rse. The best way to do it is with an infra-red thermometer to measure the temperature of the inlet and outlet of each rad. The problem is that you need to let the system settle after each adjustment so it takes aaaaaaaggggggeeeessss.

I never bother. If I have a rad that isn't heating up quickly enough I just find the ones that are heating up quickly and shut the valves down a small amount.

We've just had a plumber in to rebalance ours yesterday (twas free, though, because they've just installed a new heating system). Can be as simple as turning the hot ones down a bit, but not if you're going to do it properly (my DIY book says you should use special thermometers that clip on the pipes on either side, so you can measure the difference in temperature between the feed pipe and the return pipe). Anyway, in our case rebalancing wasn't enough, and the plumber had to alter the pump speed plus remove an expansion vessel (I nodded and smiled and pretended I knew what he was talking about). In your case, I agree that if Mrs Stubborn is so knowledgeable, she should do it herself - or let you get a plumber in.

ah i see, now i know what it is... I would GSI - Get Someone In. Wink
