to think people who are crying poor should not eat

Warburtons seeded batch bread.

On BBc news yesterday the roving reporter was out and about in a working mans house talking about the cuts and the people where complaining about losing money but in the background on the breakfast counter was a warburtons seeded loaf at about £1.70
Now if I had to tighten my belt I would be buying cheaper bread

People must realise that we have to live within our means and if that involves buying economy bread then so be it
If your income is reduced then so must your expenditure

problem solved
spend less buy cheaper

OP, you're actually a real poster? With a profile and everything? Jeez.

So er, you think economy brands are great. Well that's good. What an insightful thread.

Actually, in Orwell's The Road to Wigan Pier he does a breakdown of the best possible diet to have if you are on a poverty line budget, and IIRC he concludes the best thing to do is buy healthy staples in modest quantities. So, things like oranges, and decent bread rather than shitty bread, for example (I am paraphrasing/extending his point).

Having had times in my life when I bought a lot of economy staples, eg, cheap shitty bread, I am certain that it is a false economy. If you don't have much you need to spend wisely, not squander cash on bread made of polystyrene that won't nourish your family.

LynLiesNomoreZombieFest · 20/10/2010 21:06

So now we have an answer to all of their problems, eat s**t and die.

LadyBaiter · 20/10/2010 21:07

YANBU

My sister is on benefits but she buys Cravendale milk. It's shocking really.

BelleDeChocChipCookieMonster · 20/10/2010 21:09

At least the government won't raise the minimum price for alcohol now, imagine the problems this would cause; there would be riots in the streets! Wink

Anyone for a little wine?

GypsyMoth · 20/10/2010 21:09

its 67p in my sainsburys op Confused

what you whingeing about??

MumInBeds · 20/10/2010 21:09

I bought some of that today, it's on offer at 50p in Asda at the moment.

I've bought all sorts of breads when near to date for 10p a loaf.

cobbledtogether · 20/10/2010 21:10

I bet he wasn't using 5p beans either, the wastrel.

Quick everyone! Lets start a campaign to bring back the Kwik Save No Frills brand before the poor people eat Heinz!

Valpollicella · 20/10/2010 21:11

Did they have a plasma screen too? That they bought with their benefits?

DirtyMartiniOfDoom · 20/10/2010 21:11

Also: wtf is "crying poor"?

bodycolder · 20/10/2010 21:11

Good lord OP get a life

GivesHeadlessHorseman · 20/10/2010 21:12

I though all poor people were too stupid to understand the nutrional benefits of nuts and seeds and flax and stuff, and only ate pies?

This man clearly has ideas above his station. I think he should be executed, as an example to others.

BelleDeChocChipCookieMonster · 20/10/2010 21:12

They are opening an 'Iceland' in the Westfield here. How dare they, as if there's not enough pound shops!

There's a jolly good Waitrose in the next city though (thank god).

catsmother · 20/10/2010 21:12

I eat Warburton's Seeded Bread - lovely it is too. I am, however, (relatively - and it's all relative isn't it) "poor" .... dump of a house quite literally falling down around my ears (can't afford to maintain it, never mind decorate it), drive an ancient falling to bits car (need it for work), have had 1 holiday in 6 years (appreciate some people get less than that), am working 55 hours a week (mostly anti-social hours but can't afford a "normal" 9 to 5 job - even if I could find one, because I'd take home considerably less than I earn now after childcare), need dental work but can't afford it (know it will cost more in long run but am hoping the niggling pain might go away), have horrendous debt (through not having enough money for basics, NOT through living the high life) etc, etc, etc, etc ad infinitum ..... too many examples of "poor" to list and am nervous of doing so when so many others are worse off.

Spend a lot of time stressing out about money .... not a day goes past without worrying .... wake up several times a night with head spinning - yet again - about how else we might get some more money without resorting to crime (joke). However .... I now realise the answer has been staring me in the face all this time - boy do I feel stupid to have missed it, what a klutz I must be ...... quite obviously if I ditch the seeds and start buying the cheapest bread Lidl offers (25 mile round trip from me BTW)..... all our problems will be solved and I will be living the life of Riley.

DwainRooney · 20/10/2010 21:14

sorry about the price
DW as just told me it is £1.40 a loaf
That is still a lot if you think you can get a cheap one for less than 50p

MuGGGhoulWump · 20/10/2010 21:14

I'm poor and I'm going to the Good Food Show on Friday.
I have ideas well above my station.
I'm even planning on having oysters for lunch and once I bought pre-cut fruit.

Will I be shot now?

LadyBaiter · 20/10/2010 21:14

Valpollicella - my sister has a 234inch flat screen TV. She's never worked a day in her life, and she buys Cif, instead of own brand crem cleaner. Her behaviour appalls me.

GivesHeadlessHorseman · 20/10/2010 21:15

Yeah but that's 90p a poor person can't spend on fags or pot noodles, so everyone's a winner.

LadyBaiter · 20/10/2010 21:15

*cream, I meant cream, not the posher 'crem' version...

DwainRooney · 20/10/2010 21:16

catsmother
You wont be living the life of Riley but as we all know
Every little helps

CommonSenseSuze · 20/10/2010 21:16

Maybe it was the cameraman's. Is he good enough to eat Waburton Seeded Loaf Batch?

GypsyMoth · 20/10/2010 21:16

that will be a full size loaf.....the smaller ones are around 60p and affordable,as are the £1.40 ones......AFFORDABLE!!

CommanderCool · 20/10/2010 21:17

I was charged £3.50 for a loaf of crusty bread at our local poncey deli a few years ago.

I was so shocked, I paid it and then sat on a wall in stunned silence.

It worked out at about 50p a mouthful. Shock

By the way, if you've ever experienced having no money, you wpuld know that sometimes the little things - like a bit of nice bread - make life a bit more bearable and a bit less shit.

No one tells you what to do with your money...

proudnscary · 20/10/2010 21:18

Well DwainRooney of the very topical name...on the up side this made me look on your profile page and your little boy is seriously cute. Or is that you?
