and the Tories are doing their best to put things right?

get well soon Maggie, we could do with you now.

Yes, mostly I agree with you. However, I'm getting tired listening to the Tories constantly reminding us that "it's not our fault we're in this mess", almost to cover up some controversial decisions they have made.

Politics tires me, too much shouting in the House of Commons. Just my opinion really, feel free to disagree.

Bucketcrutch · 20/10/2010 02:16

I dont disagree with you, I just want the Argies(Sorry Argentinians, dont wish to offend the PC brigade) to start another conflict, just to show how silly these cuts are.
MY Oh is in the Navy and is worried about losing his job.

Yes Labour must take their share of the blame; no the Tories are not trying to put things right; they're using the crisis to push their own ghastly agenda.

WingDad · 20/10/2010 02:25

I'm slightly worried too Bucket, myself and my brother are in the military and we're wondering what the future holds. Sounds like contracts just aren't going to be renewed, which is heavily disappointing.

The Argentinians have shown 'interest' in having the Falklands back, and maybe some action may be taken in the future. Time will tell.

(I personally don't want to be sent to the Falklands to fight, it's terrible weather over there...)

Bucketcrutch · 20/10/2010 02:27

The weather doesnt affect my OH as he is on Submarines. He was sent down there a few months ago just to let them know we still care. There are rumoured to be huge gas/oil reserves down there so that will cause some problem no doubt.

OP posts:
WingDad · 20/10/2010 02:32

Oh great, well I'll be sat in the rainy, wet fields trying to fire a rifle while my hands are shaking uncontrollably Grin

(Experienced it a few times before, never want to again!)

I can understand your husband may be worried since he's on submarines and must be quite specialised. Forgive me, but I didn't really pay attention to the Navy side of things today (selfish me), what's happening to the submarine fleets?

Bucketcrutch · 20/10/2010 02:34

Nothing whatsoever YET. The ships and RFAs took the big hit. Trident renewal is being delayed but that was expected.

OP posts:
WingDad · 20/10/2010 02:37

Indeed. Well the good news is they'll be keeping up the supply and support for Afghanistan, I might end up there again some day (Heaven forbid).

I hope it all works out, weren't they discussing removing the one submarine in the Trident fleet that's always in readiness, i.e. allowing for one to be in repairs and still be covered operationally? Have I got that right? I have to say, I've only really focussed on the Army and RAF side of things, sorry!

NerdyFace · 20/10/2010 08:07

Of course Maggie is going to get better!

She will drain the blood from a Virgin eat a few babies and last another 30 bloody years

FakePlasticTrees · 20/10/2010 08:30

NerdyFace - you are naughty Grin (but I agree, if the good die young, she'll last forever)

I also agree that Labour are to blame, and the Tories do need to make some painful cuts to get things back on track - but heaven help us if it's bad enough to get that cowbag out of retirement!

And what are the Argies thinking threatening another fight - we fought hard enough to keep the Falklands when there was just the off chance of some oil, we've definately found some now, there's no hope we'll just hand them over!

Bucharest · 20/10/2010 08:37

"Argies"

Dear God in heaven.

ColdComfortFarm · 20/10/2010 08:42

Labour is to blame

olderandwider · 20/10/2010 08:56

Brits, Argies - just abbreviations surely.

Prinnie · 20/10/2010 08:58

YANBU, Labour completely to blame, many older people I know predicted this due to maintaining a structural deficit when the times were good.

Also remember that actually we are only cutting back to 2006/7 levels of spending it is the reallocation of the spending to start to pay debts etc which is going to hurt.

ColdComfortFarm · 20/10/2010 09:02

Oh yes, abbreviations are all so harmless. Paki, for example, just an abbreviation Hmm

BeenBeta · 20/10/2010 09:03

Sitting listening to snippets of Camerons speech yesterday it did leave me wondering whether big gaps had bene left in our defence capability.

I dont mean our capability to go and invade a country like Iraq/Afghanistan but to actually defend our nation and the sea lanes around it as well as intervene in countries where we have a historic interest, mount rescue missions, arrest pirates, attack terrorist strongholds, etc.

Of course YANBU as the recession only happened in the UK and the rest of the world is fine. What we need now is lots of unemployment to make the immigrants/benefit scroungers/ Argies realise that they can't just sit about wanting political correctness gone mad to get them out of the mess they've caused. It wasn't like this in my day when we had respect for the Queen and young people would've got a clip round the ear from a friendly neighbourhood policeman for quantitative easing. Bring back the birch I say.

EdgarAllInPink · 20/10/2010 09:06

look at my profile for the next thing in British tanks :)

BeenBeta · 20/10/2010 09:07

By the way, the firms drilling for oil off thd Falklands are finding their exloration wells are coming up dry. I suspect interest in the Falklands may well cool if no oil is found. If it is found the oil companies would have to contribute to any sea defence that had to be put in to protect the oil fields against any and all adversaries.

ColdComfortFarm · 20/10/2010 09:07

If it wasn't for the UK involvement in Bush's wretched US wars and the untold billions wasted there, we might not be in such a mess. Yes, Labour's wars, to the party's enternal disgrace, but supported by the Tories up to the hilt.

Bucharest · 20/10/2010 09:08

"Just abbreviations."

Depends on context and connotation.

So, erm, nope. Not just abbreviations.

EdgarAllInPink · 20/10/2010 09:08

seriously though, am concerned about the loss of Harier - sounds like RAF vs fleet air arm politics depriving us of some excellent flight technology for ten odd years. (i mean a jet that can take off straight up! FFS)

olderandwider · 20/10/2010 09:09

Completely different obviously. For one thing, calling someone a Paki, will, rightly, get you arrested and possibly prosecuted. Calling someone a Brit, Argie or Aussie does not have the same offensive connotations imo. I could be wrong and welcome an Argentinian or Aussie coming onto MN and saying they find the terms offensive. In which case I stand corrected.
I am not offended by the word "Brit" btw.
