Barbie

Is it just me that can't stand the Barbie advert that's recently started appearing on tv?
All these female firefighters, skydivers and ballerinas going on about how you can do anything you dream of.....achieved by playing with a plastic doll with unfeasibly out of proportion norks? Hmm

yanbu

PutTheKettleOn · 18/10/2010 19:28

yes, yes I saw that for the first time the other night and it wound me up so much I thought 'I'm going to post on AIBU about that'... and then obviously I forgot...

What exactly is the message? As long as you're pretty (and well stacked) you can get any job you like?!

Skyrg · 18/10/2010 19:30

YANBU! It came on today and seemed fine... then it came up with 'Barbie' and honestly, there was this deathly silence while my partner and I turned round to give each other the EXACT same look of complete puzzlement and shock.

They are obviously trying to improve their current image.

2blessed2bstressed · 18/10/2010 22:43

So glad it's not just me!

At least they've got firefighters and skydivers! I remember when Barbie used to come in 'Astronaut' and 'University' incarnations, but when my GodDaughter was going through her Barbie phase, all I could find were bleeding princesses, ballerinas and pony club. I'd have welcomed a firefighter!

I had Barbies and Sindys when I were a bairn - did it make me want to be stacked and blonde? Er, no!

ForMashGetSmash · 19/10/2010 09:44

My DD has a couple of them and I love pointing out her proportions and how unfeasabe they are...DD sniggers at her weird body and understands it'snot how real people are. She also chops off her hair.

didgeridoo · 19/10/2010 09:49

I agree with Diamondback. I had a Sindy (in those days you just got 1 & changed her clothes!)and the proportion of her norks never registered with me. I am blonde but my Sindy had brown hair.Grin

arses · 19/10/2010 09:51

Yes, dear, you can be anything you want if you are blonde, skinny of waist and large of bosom.

slug · 19/10/2010 09:52

Gawd no, one of the reasons my DD is restricted to CBBC only is so she's not exposed to adverts for Barbie and the lilke.

Mind you, she's not as bad as Bratz dolls which are known as "baby slut dolls" in our house. [evil feminist mother emoticon]

Onetoomanycornettos · 19/10/2010 09:58

I bought my daughter the Barbie puppy swim school for her birthday, much against my better judgement. The Barbie is even thinner than I imagined possible, with literally sticks for arms. She's also in a bikini, which made my two girls laugh, as they think bikinis are a bit rude, even though I've explained a million times that wearing something similar to pants and a bra on the beach is not rude! Luckily, they have no interest in the Barbie and love playing with the dogs in the bath, which was the whole point of buying it.

YANBU to dislike anything to do with Barbie.

FindingMyMojo · 19/10/2010 10:07

I fucking hate Barbie & Bratz - Gawd bless the BBC/Cbeebies for sparing us advertisements targeting children selling all manner of wretchedness.

ArmyBarmyMummy · 19/10/2010 10:19

Not sure what I did to create a barbie loving 'pink ' DD1. I hate the things -tho' obviously not passionately enough to stop her having them in the house. I loved the Emma Thompson line in 'Love Actually' choosing between dominatrix an slut barbie!

Have to say DD2 (4mths) is currently head to toe in pink so I guess I'll be living with barbie 4 a whole lot more years. Oh joy.

FindingMyMojo · 19/10/2010 10:41

ArmyBarmy presumably DD2 didn't dress herself this morning? Grin

ArmyBarmyMummy · 19/10/2010 20:03

True, We (actually DH this a.m) dress her in pink but 90% of her wardrobe is pink (we've bought very little pink, she's still in stuff people have given). I'd say 75% of the stuff in shops for baby girls is pink. Still people ask how old is he? whats his name? Isn't he lovely....Ah!!!

MooMooFarm · 19/10/2010 20:27

YABU

Our DD loves Barbie and loves anything pink. She does have lots of clothes that aren't pink, but given the choice, she will always choose something pink to wear.

It's just a doll and it's just a colour, I don't see what all the fuss is about [hhmm]

As a kid I was just the same. I loved my Barbie/Sindy dolls, and I don't think their ridiculous proportions even registered with me at the time - and I am now very happy, thank you very much, with my fat arse, and wouldn't swap it for a skinny one (I'm also happy with my big tits tho...)[hgrin]

MooMooFarm · 19/10/2010 20:28

PS - why has t*ts been cancelled out on here? How come it's ok to say fuck???

MooMooFarm · 19/10/2010 20:30

PPS - and why can I not type any swear words on here when I've seen them all over the place???
