To be pissed off FIL wants us to have girl because there is already one male 'child' in his life - the sodding cat

He actually said that - i am 32 weeks pg with first child conceived after two years trying and he said this weekend that we'd better make it a girl because he already has a boy child to love - his fucking cat.

I think he could tell I didn't find it funny because today he tried to make it better by saying he'd thought of a good reason it was ok if we had a boy - the reason being we could then take all my dh's Lego and boy toys from the loft. I was in no mood to make
nice and just snapped that girls like Lego too and that he'd better get used to the idea that not only will my girls have Lego but my boys will have dolls too of they want them.

He tries hard - he just always makes unfuny 'jokes' and says stuff that comes out rude and odd. And to compare a grandchild to a cat - ffs!

ahh, sounds like it was just a silly joke, he realised it had upset you and is trying to make amends.

Is there any chance at all that you are a bit hormonal and over sensitive? I remember the end of both my pregnancies - if someone said good morning to me I was convinced they were having a go Grin

pozzled · 17/10/2010 21:28

I'm with Hecate on this- it sounds like he was just trying to be funny, and then trying to show you that he didn't really mean it.

ThatDamnDog · 17/10/2010 21:28

What Hecate said. Plus, you will have this to laugh at in years to come. I imagine he will have some more gems to add to it in years to come.

Skyrg · 17/10/2010 21:29

It really does sound like it was just a joke. A bad one, but still a joke!
I have to admit I think I'd have snapped about the Lego too though. Ofc girls like Lego...

maddy68 · 17/10/2010 21:31

Bloody hell how sensitive are you? Clearly it was just a joke, do you think pregnancy hormones are making you a bit crazy and losing your sense of humour?

MollieO · 17/10/2010 21:32

yellowflowers sounds like a well meaning joke. I didn't take offence to my mother coming into the delivery room shortly after ds was delivered, holding him and trying to work out his weight by comparing him to how heavy her yorkie dog was to hold. Grin

Maybe I should have. Hmm

Yes, I think it was a joke as well. A dickheadish joke, but still a joke.

yellowflowers · 17/10/2010 22:05

Yeah you are all right. It's just his 'jokes' are never funny.

Apparently when my mil wanted children he said to her 'you can have one but make it a boy'.

She did. But really, what an idiot.

Okay, sorry, but YABU. He made a joke, you didn't find it funny, he tried to make the situation better with another joke and you didn't find it funny either.

You have a different sense of humour to him, that's all. Actually, YABVU. But you're pregnant, so I can sort of excuse it (a bit)!

I hope you haven't upset your poor FIL. If you have, I would apologise.

Sorry, don't think that's what you wanted to hear. :(

taintedpaint · 17/10/2010 22:06

Making jokes that you don't find funny doesn't make him an idiot though. Think you might have to apologise here, I just hope you haven't upset a well meaning man by snapping.

TrillianSlasher · 17/10/2010 22:07

He can want what he likes, it's not going to make any difference to his son's sperm or the child already growing inside you.

Minione · 17/10/2010 22:09

Again, think he was probably joking! Not the funniest joke in the world but I'm sure he didn't mean it maliciously!

mumeeee · 18/10/2010 00:01

YABU, It was just a silly joke. He did try and make amends with you

Heracles · 18/10/2010 00:29

Christ, it was a joke.

It was a joke.
Dont get upset.

Hope your pregnancy goes well

chandra · 18/10/2010 01:26

Gosh, I hope it is a joke. This reminds me of my neighbour, whose ILS never ring her to see how she or her DDs were doing through all the trauma of a years long divorce process. Yet, the day the ILS' dog died, they rang to notify her of its passing.... Needless to say she asked them to stuff the dog bury the dog without her presence or that of her children.

DomesticG0ddess · 18/10/2010 07:39

I think maybe you are a bit hormonal. But congratulations on your pregnancy! Really, you will have to put up with loads of IL comments over the next couple of decades once you have children.

tuggy · 18/10/2010 07:59

YABU and very hormonal. As every one else has said it is a joke. Get over yourself.

GoreRenewed · 18/10/2010 08:00

Oh dear. It was a joke!
