to wonder what the difference is between Nurofen and Calprofen

we have both...the dose for DD2 (1.3) is as follows:

Nurofen - 5ml
Calprofen - 2.5ml

why the difference, looked and seems to be same concentration. nurofen always seems to work much more quickly (which it would do i guess if i am giving double the dose)

can i therefore give 5ml of Calprofen to a 1 yr old...?

though baby neurofen was 2.5ml as well.

they're different preparations of the same active ingredient (ibuprofen), but at different concentrations, so no, you can't mix up the doses...

littleshinyone · 17/10/2010 09:43

oh. didn't see that about same concentration... stupid isn't it. in the hospital i worked at we went on 5mg per kg, so I usually do that.

Nurofen:
20-30 mg/kg bodyweight in divided doses
Infants 6 - 12 months: One 2.5ml dose may be taken 3 to 4 times in 24 hours.

Children 1 - 3 years: One 5ml dose may be taken 3 times in 24 hours.

Calprofen:
20mg/kg/day in divided doses

Infants 6-12 months: 2.5ml three times a day.

Children 1-2 years: 2.5ml three to four times a day

from here

whoneedssleepanyway · 17/10/2010 09:54

Nurofen:

Ibuprofen 100mg/5ml (equivalent to 2.0% w/v).

Calprofen:

Ibuprofen 100mg/5ml

I just find it weird that what appears to be exactly the same one recommends twice the dose of the other...

will stick to dose on bottles but odd

ps sorry for multiple threads on same topic not sure what happened there Blush
