to think schoolgirls shouldn't wear short skirts?

cruelladepoppins · 13/10/2010 19:30

I mean really short, barely bum-covering, as I saw at our local senior school open day yesterday evening?

It was just indecent. Even with thick tights. Do the boys (and teachers) just look in another direction?

How do the girls run around, bend to pick something up etc?

I was talking to the mum of one of them, and she says she's dreading when they do their work experience this year, she just can't get her DD to understand a pelmet might not be appropriate for a workplace. They think it's OK because everyone wears them to school. I'm not kidding, I didn't see a single knee-length skirt, nor even a just-above-the-knee one.

I'm the mother of boys (oh-oh) - any mothers of girls out there care to defend the teeny-skirt idea?

So 3,557 days since the last poster wrote something, you decided this thread needed your comment

Pepperwort · 12/08/2020 03:35

Good grief, 10 years old thread. Is this a MN record?? How did this resurface?

Ericaequites · 12/08/2020 03:40

Why not make senior school pupils wear oldfashioned gymslips well below the knee? It would solve the problem, and it's still done in New Zealand.
My old school has girls wearing very short skirts. If I know you are wearing a black thong, your skirt is far too short. Don't get me started on the unwholesomeness of thongs, and the complete lack of petticoats...

Pepperwort · 12/08/2020 03:43

ZOMBIE THREAD. I feel like I've stumbled over an antique or an old childhood book...

ShebaShimmyShake · 12/08/2020 07:33

We did this. We weren't trying to be sexual, we were just trying to be cool and slightly rebellious. All the ones I still know about went on to the workplace just fine, in fact some of them wear uniforms for work and do it properly.

It was so common at school, and generally such a non issue, that teachers generally let it go unless the skirt really was a piss taking length. An inch or two above the knee, which is what most of us did, and they mostly ignored it. It's not a big deal.

ShebaShimmyShake · 12/08/2020 07:41

Oh. Sorry.

BetsyBigNose · 12/08/2020 07:54

Our secondary school uniform rules state that the kilt/skirt (I think they call it a kilt to justify charging £28 each - it actually just a pleated skirt Hmm) must be "at most, 4 finger widths above the middle of the knee".

Luckily (for me, at least), my eldest daughter prefers her skirts to be as long as possible, along with most of the rest of her group of female friends and my younger daughter is about to join year 7 and is so terrified at the thought of getting a detention, that there's no way she'll be breaking the rules any time soon!

The girls do have the option to wear trousers, but they have to be a certain pair, which the school have specified and are only available (at £19 a pair!) from the School Uniform shop. Which would be fine - but the school have only seen fit to provide one type/cut of black school trousers, which they deem suitable for both boys and girls, between the ages 11 and 16! So the 4'5", 5 stone little boys are expected to fit into the same shape of trousers as a 5' 7" 16 year old, 12 stone/size 16 young lady, complete with hips!

There are plenty of girls who do roll their skirts up on their way to school, but they have Teachers standing at the entrances as they arrive in the morning and any girl with their skirt rolled up has to lower it there and then. I think that due to the bulky nature of the fabric and the pleating, having the skirt rolled over several times at the waist can leave the girl looking quite bulky around the middle - which I suspect deters some of them!

WitchesNStuff · 12/08/2020 07:54

Nothing has changed re how girls wear their uniform since I was at school in the 90s. We wore really short skirts usually with thick tights and long black boots. Eventually the head banned thick tights which meant most girls stopped wearing bum skimmers. We were allowed to wear trousers also.

The main difference is that teenage girls were much more mature back then, they had their own minds and own styles. Now they are babied IMO, they also have the same hair/eyebrows etc and are basically sheep. Its not a great look. You see a group if girls and they all look the same, boring.

WitchesNStuff · 12/08/2020 07:56

although I really can't get worked up over girls in short skirts. Normal decent male teachers wouldn't give a shit and teenage boys just think its normal and doesn't matter what girls wear to them.

WitchesNStuff · 12/08/2020 07:58

Oh FFS.why do people resurrect these!!

BerryPieandCustard · 12/08/2020 08:15

I realise this thread is a decade old but

The secondary school my niece is about to start in September has just changed from kilts that we’re rolled up by most girls to culottes that are knee length but the crotch will prevent any rolling up.

LakieLady · 12/08/2020 08:16

Is this the oldest zombie thread ever?Grin

Anyway, @WitchesNStuff, we were rolling our skirts over when I was at secondary in the 1960s, I can't see it stopping now.

PopsicleHustler · 12/08/2020 08:24

When I collect my kids from infant school, I wait at the corner of the street, where my eldest comes from the senior school, as it's the same road on both our routes home so it's easier to meet and walk home together. As I am waiting for him, i see so many girls both from the juniors and the seniors walking in tight and short mini skirts. Its shocking. It's really sad they feel they cant wear them knee length or longer. Its revealing and makes me feel so sad and uncomfortable. We have so many paedophiles now. And I just think oh my goodness, how many men have been looking at these girls today. Furthermore, how do their parents let them leave the house like this , not just in school uniform but in weekend attire too. The 12 and 13 yr old girls in my road are allowed to wear mini skirts, crop tops and heels. I just cringe when I see it

BigKnickers87 · 12/08/2020 08:26

I know this is an old thread but retrospectively I probably looked really indecent at school. It was when I was 14-16 so in early 2000s and I rolled my skirt up, it was skin tight, I wore thigh socks and a thong underneath. You could definitely see my arse cheeks walking behind me up the stairs 😬 it was a grammar school too so I’m surprised they allowed it. But the head was a perv. After I left they got a new head and he got much stricter with uniform!!

Tunnocks34 · 12/08/2020 08:31

Is this a new thing? When I was in high school, the second I was on the bus I rolled that skirt up until it was just under my arse. Just worse my PE shorts underneath it!

As a teacher we tell girls to roll skirts down if too short. Which they do and then promptly roll back up.

I can’t get too worked up Over it.

Tunnocks34 · 12/08/2020 08:31

Ahhh fell for a zombie

SerenDippitty · 12/08/2020 08:58

I never rolled my skirt, I was not one of the cool kids and thought I had horrible legs. Our sixth form uniform was a pinafore dress that had to be made - so unless you had it made short to begin with there was not much you could do to sex it up.

Hingeandbracket · 12/08/2020 09:06

I remember getting the aircoach into Dublin once - two (English) women near to me were remarking on the Dublin schoolgirls "oooh look how long their skirts are, our girls would never put up with that eh?".
I imagine if there's no peer pressure - or societal pressure is sufficient then longer skirts can work.
BTW I am not having a go at any either English or Irish person - this is an actual observation.

SerenDippitty · 12/08/2020 09:08

@Morloth

There is also the question as to why a woman dressed in traditionally 'male' clothes (i.e. a trouser suit and jacket) is viewed as sensible and smart and a man dressed in traditionally 'female' clothes (i.e. a floral dress) is viewed with derision and humour.

Why? Why is looking like a man the benchmark for 'smart'/'sensible'?

Trouser suits don’t have to look “traditionally male”. They can be in other than neutral colours, accessorised and cut so they flatter the female figure.
UnfinishedSymphon · 12/08/2020 09:19

Why the fuck would anyone resurrect this thread?!

ZOMBIE ZOMBIE ZOM BIE BIE BIE BIE

motherheroic · 12/08/2020 09:26

@UnfinishedSymphon What's the point in shouting about it. You're also bumping the thread by leaving your comment. So.

ThisLittleLady · 12/08/2020 09:46

I’ve seen many examples of this when waiting for kids after school. Literally arse hanging out. Have to wonder if there’s a skirt in there at all. Maybe make them wear culottes ( spell?) or short type skirts. Or those skirts where at least the shorts are built in then we don’t have to look at theirs arse knickers and or tights. I know girls kinda. Go through a stage where they want to sort of show off don’t they? I made my dd wear shirts under every skirt. More because she flings herself about and constantly had her skirt up doing handstands and cartwheels and stuff but shorts under every skirt. Maybe schools need to introduce that, so not saying you can’t wear a skirt but at least sparing some blushes if your skirt , ahem, ‘happens’ to ride up during the day..

DdraigGoch · 12/08/2020 09:53

@WitchesNStuff

although I really can't get worked up over girls in short skirts. Normal decent male teachers wouldn't give a shit and teenage boys just think its normal and doesn't matter what girls wear to them.
As this zombie thread is now very much resurrected...

There are plenty of female teachers who have commented in the past that they are made to feel uncomfortable when half of the class are flashing their knickers at them while sat down in class. It's not an issue of pervy male teachers or lecherous teenage boys (neither of whom would be complaining), it's an issue of common decency. No one wants to see other people's underwear. The same applies for teenage boys who refuse to wear a belt and go around displaying large parts of their boxers.

cringeworthit · 12/08/2020 09:58

@WitchesNStuff

Oh FFS.why do people resurrect these!!
This is something I find myself asking on a regular basis.
MoreListeningLessChatting · 12/08/2020 10:26

I wouldn't blame the teachers ever. They must get really annoyed that girls do this to show off their bums/legs.

Society still pushes the show lots of flesh to be sexy message. From an early age girls (and boys) watch pop stars prance around in gear usually seen on strippers and even very young girls copy this. Strange that a target market of 8+ young girls needs pop bands such as little mix to dress like strippers, move like strippers etc.... The ones buying their music aren't in the main adults...

So girls continue to do this and will continue to do this. Perhaps society as a whole including and mainly parents should show that it isn't necessary to roll the skirt up and show the bum... who knows.

Anyway it is never the teachers fault why would it be!
