to think that soap is not dirty!

Everyone seems obsessed with liquid soap these days and I keep hearing that soap is dirty. Please tell me what will happen to me if I carry on using it??
Plus I'm not convinced that these "soap-free liquid handwashe, 95% moisturising cream with extract of ylang ylang and aloe vera" actually WASH your hands.

Don't use soap myself but only because I feel sick if I have to pick hairs out of it. Also, I don't like the idea that I might be using the bar on my face just after someone else has used it on their bum!

Indith · 11/10/2010 13:04

What will happen if you carry on using it? Erm...you'll have clean hands? Of course soap isn't dirty. Good old soap is perfectly fine and uses far less packaging too.

BuntyPenfold · 11/10/2010 13:04

I have heard that germs flourish on old wet soap; I would like to know if it is true.

YunoYurbubson · 11/10/2010 13:05

I don't like the slimey feel of shower gels and the like. You get properly squeaky clean with a car of soap.

MmeBodyInTheBasement · 11/10/2010 13:05

Mummydoit
Where do you wash your hands if you are worried someone might have used the soap on their bum?

I prefer liquid soap as it is less messy than normal soap, but not out of any cleanliness thing. I am VERY suspicious however of anyone who washes their hands with the disinfectant stuff rather than soap and water.

Indith · 11/10/2010 13:05

Oh yes MummyDoIt I do agree with the face/bum thing. I use separate things in the shower and a separated face wash so our bar of soap is used for hands only. I remember when I lived with my parents my dad just used to grab the bar of soap and rub it all over the place then put it back complete with pubes. Nice.

MummyDoIt · 11/10/2010 13:06

If I'm staying at someone else's house, MBITB, and it's in their bathroom.

DooinMeSizers · 11/10/2010 13:07

What will happen if you carry on using it? you'll die of course. Of the black death or something Hmm

loonyrationalist · 11/10/2010 13:07

YANBU liquid soap is expensive & wasteful; it made me roar with laughter the the newest thing made up to part people from their money invention is an automatic pump for liquid soap because the pump can get dirty; funny on a whole load of levels!!

Mowiol · 11/10/2010 13:07

Bars of soap aren't dirty so YANBU.

I use liquid soap purely because I can't stand soap dishes that get sort of slimy again minutes after they have been rinsed.

That's the only reason I prefer liquid soap - but OF COURSE DH prefers bars so I have to have both Hmm

Personally I reckon everyone is overly obsessed with this sort of rubbish about germs on soap - nonsense.

MmeBodyInTheBasement · 11/10/2010 13:08

loony
I saw these automatic soap dispensers here in France in the supermarket - they were selling them half price. Obviously not popular over here then.

MrsChemist · 11/10/2010 13:11

YANBU, but I buy liquid soap for the same reason Mowiol does; it gets the soap dish skuzzy.

fluffles · 11/10/2010 13:14

i buy liquid soap because i can't stop bars of soap from sliding off the sink into the sink, floor, toilet, bin....

i think it's our rubbish sink.. but it's cheaper to buy liquid soap than a new bathroom sink!

nickelbabe · 11/10/2010 13:14

soap isn't dirty.

I use the hand pumps because I don't like picking up the bar of soap (don't know why, it just feels slimy), and also because the soap always leaves slime on the side of the sink.
My parents have a little gripper thing that's a magnet. The main part (with magnet) is screwed to the wall, and you shove a plate( metal with teeth) into the ew bar of soap ans it hangs off the magnet.
They've had it for years, and I've no idea where you'd buy one. I think it's a great solution.

SparklyJules · 11/10/2010 13:14

Oh that advert: "Never touch a germy soap dispenser again"

Wahahahahahhaahah!

I like to buy the Dove bars but then DH shaves in the sink and all his ginger shavings go all over my nice soap.

StealthPolarBear · 11/10/2010 13:16

Well exactly, everyone seems to agree with me
So why do I keep hearing that bars of soap are dirty? Confused
I do buy liquid stuff, as others say the dish stays cleaner, and also if everyone else thinks the bars I put out are dirty! But we all use bars - liquid stuff makes my hands really dry and cracked and DH has a similar reaction. Plus I agree with whoever said it's slimey - don't mind it on hands but I could never wash my face with it.

nickelbabe · 11/10/2010 13:18

I can't wash my face with soap.
I just use hot water, then I have to moisturise it straight away.

Mowiol · 11/10/2010 13:18

SparklyJules - I feel your pain, another reason bars annoy me!
It's a scientific fact that all crap gravitates towards and sticks to a bar of soap ....... fluff, hair, nail-clippings blah blah blah.

Meglet · 11/10/2010 13:19

I'm not keen on soap TBH. Makes a mess and slops about all over the place.

It's not dirty though. Mind you, I will go into meltdown if I see a hair on it.

MrsChemist · 11/10/2010 13:21

nickelbabe, my Nana had one of them. She recently had her bathroom redecorated and got rid of it though. Sad It was ace.

openerofjars · 11/10/2010 13:22

YANBU, but...

DS can't chew liquid soap in quite the same way as he can a bar of soap.

No other bugger round here ever cleans the hand basin and when DH shaves, the iron filings get everywhere.Angry The thought of scraping them off the soap as well as the sink is just eurrrgh.

But yes, shocking waste of packaging with liquid soap.

I expect if you have OCD then hands-free soap dispensers are brilliant. I'm not being flippant: I can think of several people I know who could benefit from knowing that other hands have touched the pump handle on the soap dispenser.

diddl · 11/10/2010 13:25

We have liquid soap for handwashing, but all prefer a bar for showering.

"I do agree with the face/bum thing."

Don´t people get soap onto their hands & wash that way then, rather than washing with the actual bar?

mumblechum · 11/10/2010 13:26

I like liquid hand wash & have it by all the sinks, just because I don't like having grubby slivers of soap around. DS & I use shower gel but DH insists on having soap in his shower.

I hadn't thought abuot the bum/face thing till ds asked me to buy him some shower gel because of it Confused

proudnscary · 11/10/2010 13:29

My dh is still sulking after I spent £14 on liquid soap dispenser from Heal's because 'we've got guests, they can't just use the Dove soap"'!!!! Twat. (Me that is.)

squirrel42 · 11/10/2010 13:29

Wikipedia (source of all reliable knowledge) says the following: "Solid soap, because of its reusable nature, may hold bacteria acquired from previous uses. Yet, it is unlikely that any bacteria are transferred to users of the soap, as the bacteria are rinsed off with the foam."

I use nice bar soap from Lush and antibacterial handwash respectively depending on what I've been touching - don't really want raw chicken mank to be left on the bar just before I wash my face with it.

And other people's pubes are going nowhere near my Honey I Washed The Kids soap!
