ARRRGGGHH!!! I spent the day thinking what will this child eat? So I opted for mince and Potatoes (Not a vegetarian) fairly safe option I thought.
The friend wouldn't even try it, not only that he couldn't even use a knife and fork at 7 years!!
WTF. My DC are told to least try something before dismissing it.Maybe it's me.

YABU. Mince and potatos does not sound a very appetising meal.

I used to love trios.

escapologist · 08/10/2010 14:07

I'd just like to express my utter loathing of mince and potatoes. I'd never force it on anyone. Eurgh.

I wouldn't be too judgy about a 7 year old not being able to use a knife and fork. My son is dyspraxic and really couldn't use cutlery properly until he was nearly 9. He's 10 now and he still struggles a bit with it (moving the fork while holding the knife and other weird things).

FellatioNelson · 08/10/2010 14:07

I have spent many a year trying to persuade my DCs that sans-crap muesli bars are delicious treats. Even I have always known, deep down that it wasn't true. I've totally given up lying to them now - also abandoned wholemeal bread years ago - my youngest would rather starve than eat it. After years of worthy cooking and worthy shopping I just don't give a stuff any more. If it's quick and easy and they like it they can have it. I've got better things to do with my time than invent ways to disguise broccoli.

OrmRenewed · 08/10/2010 14:08

My mother used to give me 'lovely' home-made biscuits and cake. And they were always healthy bloody things full of oats, raisin and wholemeal flour. I looooonged for some processed food all my childhood.

ItsGraceAgain · 08/10/2010 14:08

Oh, my mum used to do healthy wholemeal lunches too. It was awful. This was back in the Sixties, when white sliced with ham & cheese was the height of schoolgirl fashion. I had lumpy, home-made brown bread with bran in it and peanut butter - which was so esoteric, then, you had to get it from the delicatessen. The whole bloody class had to see what weirdness was in my lunchbox every day, then invent witty epithets for it (like 'dog poo an house bricks', obviously).

Perhaps this is why I'm so very happy to feed children eat the popular option!

OrmRenewed · 08/10/2010 14:10

Oh yeah! I had cowpat biscuits apparently Hmm And then the shame when mum provided a huge tin of the bloody things for a class christmas party.....

Aitch · 08/10/2010 14:13

my dd says she feels sorry for the kids in her class who don't have home-made bread, because they don't even like the crusts. and she says she prefers her home-made scones and flapjacks.

it won't last.

Aitch · 08/10/2010 14:14

oh and btw FUCK OFF to celery in mince. we're not italians. Shock

hmc · 08/10/2010 14:18

Acquavit - I'll bond with you over celery - I often add it to mince

FellatioNelson · 08/10/2010 14:18

That has to be my quote of the week Aitch.Grin

And I can't see many people arguing with you on the celery front.

hmc · 08/10/2010 14:20

No? Grin

Aitch · 08/10/2010 14:21

i add it to ragu, obv, it's the holy trinity in italy. onion, celery, carrot (bay, garlic) for spaghetti al ragu. but as for mince... no. no tomato puree, no celery (and ahem, a small amoutn of curry powder).

Shirleyknot · 08/10/2010 14:24

I've really enjoyed this thread.

FellatioNelson · 08/10/2010 14:27

That would be Keema technically Aitch. The trouble is, we are bandying around the term 'mince' as if it were an actual dish, and of course it can be dozens of dishes.

We just don't have all our ducks in a row do we? We are not singing from the same hymn sheet. No joined up thinking on this thread that's the problem. Accusations of heresy re: celery may be all very well for your Cottage Pie, but for your Ragu it is essential. We need to get our facts straight.

Has the OP come back to tell us how she cooked her mince yet?

Aitch · 08/10/2010 14:29

nope, it is mince. scottish mince. keema requires a bit more finessing than half a tsp of garam masala.

love keema, though, it's delicious.

aquavit · 08/10/2010 14:33

rofl at we're not italians

BUT

celery is DELICIOUS in shepherd's pie and cottage pie

depth of flavour blah blah

CheeseandGherkins · 08/10/2010 14:34

Can you still buy trios? I loved them

Aitch · 08/10/2010 14:35

yes would add to shepherds and cottage pie, if i ever made them, which i don't.

Aitch · 08/10/2010 14:41

it was a thick bit of caramac. luuuuuuuuush.

MistsAndMellow · 08/10/2010 14:42

Oh I have a mince story! My ex boyfriend's Mum used to spend all day watching cooking programmes on the television but would serve dry grey mince for dinner. Not even seasoned.

A year later she started buying pre-prepared mince-based meals from M&S and was quite astounded that they were "so much nicer than you can do yourself"

I was there when she watched the programmes with the frying pan and the sweating of onions and garlic. The adding of tomatoes, salt, pepper and herbs.

Still can't get my head around that.

nocake · 08/10/2010 14:43

TRIIIIIIII-O, TRIIIIII-IIIIII-O Grin

Baileysismyfriend · 08/10/2010 14:47

I quite fancy a Trio with a nice carton of Um Bongo to wash it down with, make that two cartons as they are a bit on the small side.
