ARRRGGGHH!!! I spent the day thinking what will this child eat? So I opted for mince and Potatoes (Not a vegetarian) fairly safe option I thought.
The friend wouldn't even try it, not only that he couldn't even use a knife and fork at 7 years!!
WTF. My DC are told to least try something before dismissing it.Maybe it's me.

you didn't feed them shit though
I am slightly confused

colditz · 07/10/2010 21:37

Never bother arguing with visiting children about their food choices. It's mean and it's pointless. Give them something with toast if sauteed potatoes (which is what chips are) are inexplicably anathema to you.

frogetyfrog · 07/10/2010 21:38

Maybe it is just you pinkclouds!

I wouldnt eat mince and potatoes - sorry but I just couldnt.

Why didnt you go for home made chicken nuggets and wedges or some other child friendly meal. Only need fingers for that!

nickschick · 07/10/2010 21:38

We had a boy here for dinner once and id cooked a roast beef dinner - he did (looking back at it)look a bit dubious but he did clear his plate and seemed quite happy.

It was only later his Mum told me hed never eaten any veg before ......Shock.

MrsMoosickle · 07/10/2010 21:39

< wonders what pinkclouds did with the leftovers?> I LOVE mince and potatoes and will be making that tomorrow now.Grin

Chil1234 · 07/10/2010 21:39

I share you pain. The day I had children round and thought 'Spag Bol' would be a safe bet.... but 'we don't like tomatoes' they wailed. I think I probably just gave them the biscuit tin and let them get on with it. My kid liked the Spag Bol!

loopyloops · 07/10/2010 21:40

Mince and potatoes sounds vile, sorry. Blush

AlgebraKnocksItUpANotchBAM · 07/10/2010 21:40

I think you just have to accept it and serve something they'll eat. if your kids eat healthily most of the time, pandering to the guest now and again will do no harm! and TBH if you make a big deal out of it you'll just look like a snob :)

nikki1978 · 07/10/2010 21:41

Mince and potatoes is a bit of an odd choice when feeding kids you don't know in my opinion. I usually give them oven chipss with peas and sausages or something. But to be honest all the mums in DDs class seem to check with each other beforehand if what they are cooking for dinner that night will be ok. You don't have to feed them rubbish but lots of kids are fussy.

HumphreyCobbler · 07/10/2010 21:42

mince
potatoes

both ordinary staple foods

I am bemused by those who think it sounds vile

ConnorTraceptive · 07/10/2010 21:42

Mince and potatoes!! Sorry but that is a really odd choice.

Give him a jam sandwich

Seona1973 · 07/10/2010 21:42

neither of mine would have eaten mince and potatoes either.

2shoes · 07/10/2010 21:44

yabu
most kids would not like mince(dd eats everything, but mince is not something I would choose to give her)

violethill · 07/10/2010 21:44

I don't understand the OP

What your own child had to eat seems a separate issue from the visiting child not wanting mince and potatoes (which does sound pretty vile actually!)

Also, why did you spend the day worrying about what they would eat? You're overthinking it all massively.

Serve up an ordinary but appealing meal for visiting friends, and if they don't eat it, don't fret!

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 07/10/2010 21:45

Visiting children always get sausages or fish fingers with waffles and beans. Safe bet.

mazzystartled · 07/10/2010 21:45

Would you feed a visiting adult something you knew they didn't like?

I think it is only good manners to make your guest feel happy regardless of their age.

DilysPrice · 07/10/2010 21:45

I have wasted hours of my life cooking imaginative and healthy meals for visiting kids - however well brought up they always turned up their noses. They now all get roast chicken legs, oven chips and corn on the cob.

thisisyesterday · 07/10/2010 21:46

what the hell is wrong with mince and potatoes?

i assume none of you eat shepherds pie, what with that being made of mince and potatoes?

there is a lot of weirdyness going on on here tonight.... it isn't a full moon is it?

and OP, YANBU!

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 07/10/2010 21:46

What's wrong with mince and potatoes???!

colditz · 07/10/2010 21:47

Pasta with sides of cheese, cucumber, tomatoes and ham goes down VERY well with visiting children. I do not know one child who doesn't think plain pasta is delicious.

frogetyfrog · 07/10/2010 21:48

Cheap mince is foul - cant be pretty disgusting in what it consists of. And poorly cooked mince can be really grainy if not cooked in milk!

Many children will only enjoy potatoes in one form or another (some eat jackets, some boiled, some chipped etc etc). Just because potatoes are served doesnt automatically make them appetising.

FallingWithStyle · 07/10/2010 21:48

Why is it always the way with these threads that the op assumes if the child doesn't like their food then they must like shit?

Maybe they like normal food but mince and potatoes just happens to be something they dont fancy?

Why the need to assume they have terrible diets as a result of not liking the ONE thing you offered?

FerrisBueller · 07/10/2010 21:48

visiting children get exactly what we'd normally be serving up - so depending on levels of ehaustion/work/what's in the cupboard or freezer they either get decent ordinary food, poncy posh food or crap. if they don't eat it they get offered some toast.

I'd plonk out some bread, ham, chunks of cheese, cherry toms/cuke/carrot sticks and leave them to it.

After 20 minutes or so, clear it away not commenting on uneaten stuff and give them ice cream.

It's a guest and not for me to change their eating habits.

I feed DD's fussy friend that, or bought pizza or burgers, because it's all she'll eat apart from crisps and cake, and I've fed her that too.

I just stuff DD full of fruit once she's gone.
