UK acceptable Names List?

TiggyD · 05/10/2010 10:19

Am I being unreasonable to think that this country should have a list of names that you are allowed to call your children.
Susan, Claire, Duncan, Florence, David, Tiggy, Agnes, Alison and Sarah are all good acceptable names. Common regional, or multi-cultural names are also OK(Asok, Llewellyn etc).
But not fruit, vegetables, kitchen utensils, animals, fish, colours (except Scarlett), makes of car, Cheryl, things you find in the sky, feelings, random letters or nicknames. Double-barrelled names should also be out.
Anybody who's name isn't Rainbow-Kumquat or Trout-toaster agree with me?

Glad that you said except Scarlett as that is my Grandaughters name.
Although my Daughter is called Amber!

Chil1234 · 05/10/2010 10:24

You'd be right at home in New Zealand were a judge decided that Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii was not an acceptable moniker. And you'd also be at home in the former Soviet Union where names like 'combine harvester' were deemed highly suitable for comrades.

Otherwise, I'm afraid, YABU. You can't legislate against stupidity

PaulineCampbellJones · 05/10/2010 10:25

Er, Tiggy? I thought that was a nickname not a real name?

TiggyD · 05/10/2010 10:33

How about cruelty? If I had been at school with a boy named Sue I'm pretty sure I would have made fun of him. Don't children need protecting from these names?

Tiggy is a great name. You can use it on its own like Madonna, Cher or Godzilla.

YANBU!

LaraJade · 05/10/2010 10:58

YABU. I know a Mercedes. She is spanish. It's a car make but a nice name for her.
I know a Krystal too. She's a cardiac nurse. And a Sherry, and a Cherri.
Don't be a snob.

TiggyD · 05/10/2010 11:01

I think Mercedes was a name first, so that would still be on my list.

OP posts:
maktaitai · 05/10/2010 11:03

I would be sad not to have the potential for names such as PraiseGod Barebones (my favourite historical character) in the future. YABU.

ratspeaker · 05/10/2010 11:08

So Violet a colour of the rainbow is out?
Rose, Marigold, Primrose, Jasmine- all colours too

Can't shorten Katherine to Kat?

No Ruby, Cherry,

Iris means rainbow

You forgot a ban on place names, usually of conception and drinks names
So therefore Bus -Shelter -Frosty -Jack is allowed and Buckfast-Playpark?

kreecherlivesupstairs · 05/10/2010 11:17

I sort of think YANBU, then wonder how dull the country would be without awful unusual names.

PaulineCampbellJones · 05/10/2010 13:52

Is Tiggy a name though or a nickname/ pet name?

Firawla · 05/10/2010 14:14

YABU
the registrars do have discretion to say no if they feel the name is inappropriate, i don't think we need any more than this
my kids names are very unusual but they are decent names, you would probably ban them. its up to the parents to chose

LittleMissHissyFit · 05/10/2010 14:19

Tiggy? nice name

Isn't it short for Antigone? Hmm

pinkthechaffinch · 05/10/2010 14:28

Your list would be fine for a mono cultural WASP society. The UK today is not though, and the names in our children's classrooms reflect this.

pinkthechaffinch · 05/10/2010 14:29

'Thing' even

yes and WTF re: Tiggy?

TiggyD · 05/10/2010 14:58

Is anythind wrong with Tiggy? It's one of those nom de plum thinds.

Flower names are kind of traditional so are OK even if they're colours too.

I did say regional/foreign names are OK too, but only if they are sensible names from those cultures.

OP posts:
Yeeehaa · 05/10/2010 15:04

Damn, you've foiled my plan to have twin dd's and call them Zafira and Meriva.

GeekOfTheWeek · 05/10/2010 15:06

Can we abolish the stupid spellings too.

Knat a lee anyone?

PrettyCandles · 05/10/2010 15:06

And how will you decide whether the name from another culture is unreasonable?

Not only are you BU, YAB ridiculously U.

BTW I was born in a country which at the time had a list of acceptable names. My parents were visitors, not even residents. They weren't allowed to give me the name of their choice - a fairly common name in their homeland- but instead were obliged to lumber me with a name from that country's list. A name which I have had to explain ever since, as, until recently, nobdy had ever heard of it here!

Rockbird · 05/10/2010 15:08

PMSL @ animals, fish, colours, makes of car, Cheryl....

:o

seenyertoeslately · 05/10/2010 15:08

I'd like twins called Yabu and Yanbu.

nannynobnobs · 05/10/2010 15:09

Augh 'original' spellings! I knew a Geccika (Jessica) and yes, her parents called her that and yes, she was tiresome!!

MoralDefective · 05/10/2010 15:15

Are you Tiggy Legge Burk by any chance??

alicet · 05/10/2010 15:38

Is it only me who wants to know what prettycandles name is??!! Grin sorry for being nosy!

xstitch · 05/10/2010 15:46

Wasn't Mercedes the car named after a person called Mercedes? So it was a name first.
