UK acceptable Names List?

TiggyD · 05/10/2010 10:19

Am I being unreasonable to think that this country should have a list of names that you are allowed to call your children.
Susan, Claire, Duncan, Florence, David, Tiggy, Agnes, Alison and Sarah are all good acceptable names. Common regional, or multi-cultural names are also OK(Asok, Llewellyn etc).
But not fruit, vegetables, kitchen utensils, animals, fish, colours (except Scarlett), makes of car, Cheryl, things you find in the sky, feelings, random letters or nicknames. Double-barrelled names should also be out.
Anybody who's name isn't Rainbow-Kumquat or Trout-toaster agree with me?

There is currently a Treyc on Xfactor. Trey...c... for the love of humanity, WHY?!

MmeLindt · 05/10/2010 15:55

Mercedes cars were named after Mercedes, the daughter of the Austrian Jellinek who commissioned the first Daimler-Mercedes car.

Germany has official lists but as long as you can prove that the name exists in another culture you can give your child a different name. (preferably the culture of one of the parents but you might get away with it)

We went to register DD's birth, set for a fight but the registrar just copied the name and took our money. Slightly deflating.

MarineIguana · 05/10/2010 15:56

YABU, quite the opposite - every time a name like Eve, Sophie, Jack, Finlay, Lewis etc etc etc blah de blah reach tipping point and become too popular, they should be banned. Boring parents-to-be should be made to go on a course where they can learn about various heavenly objects, obscure plants, perfume designers and of course the rules of alternative spelling as inspiration.

giveitago · 05/10/2010 16:03

Oh I dunno - I think some countries have lists of acceptable names and people end up using two eg jean luca - so they can get a bit of variation.

My ds is called a very 1980's english name partly because dh and I grew up in early '80's and partly because it's such a 'staid' name it counteracts his rather bonkers surname.

I'm not really into the pixie peachy stuff - but each to their own.

I hate the names of countries personally ie India. Like I'd call my dominican republic or something.

DetectivePotato · 05/10/2010 19:44

How the hell does Geccika possible spell Jessica?

Yes, stupid spellings of names should be banned, as should stupid names like Moon Unit and other shite crap that people make up.

giveitago · 05/10/2010 19:54

Detective - is there really a kid out there called moon unit? Nah.

UK cannot have a list of appropriate names as we have so many people who originate from other countries and have their own do's and don'ts for names.

But I do loathe names that are countries. Mercedes I thought was a typical spanish name.

I thought that skye was particularly naff but I've met many latin people who's names interpret as sky so I guess it's very normal.

PrettyCandles · 05/10/2010 19:56

Why shouldn't names eveolve, and people use new ones?

Dawn - then why not Noon?
Olive - then why not Apple?
Basil - then why not Thyme?
Robin - then why not Wren?
Esther - then why not Star?
Violet - then why not Lilac?

(And, Alicet, you may ask, but I ain't telling Wink)

DetectivePotato · 05/10/2010 19:56

It is a celeb childs name. Cannot remember which celeb it is though. The sibling is called something equally as daft as well.

Unfortunately, yes there is a child (possibly adult know) named Moon Unit, or they may have changed their name by now.

PrettyCandles · 05/10/2010 20:00

Moon Unit Zappa, I think. Son or daughter of Frank Zappa - American director? musician? poet? flowerpower personality, anyway.

SirBoobAlot · 05/10/2010 20:00

I think some parents need a slap round the head nudging towards more normal names, or at least spellings that aren't "cr8ive".

Though Tiggy is not a normal name.

TiggyD · 05/10/2010 20:01

Frank Zappa's children are Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen.

OP posts:
TiggyD · 05/10/2010 20:03

I chose Tiggy. The children given unusual names don't have a choice.

DetectivePotato · 05/10/2010 20:04

Thats it! Frank Zappa.

KERALA1 · 05/10/2010 20:05

Im with marine. Every 5 years all the top 10 names should be banned to force people to be abit more imaginative.

ratspeaker · 05/10/2010 20:07

Frank Zappa called his daughter Moon Unit
the other one was called Diva, his are Ahmet and Dweezil

Zowie Bowie is now Duncan Jones

My DH vetoed some of the names I chose going for "scottish " ones

I had -for a lad Wean
-for a lass Vegas

Faaamily · 05/10/2010 20:10

Duncan and Agnes.

NO.

giveitago · 05/10/2010 20:12

Oh zappa!!!!!

My good friend wanted to call her child lucifer. I thought nothing of it until another friend pointed out that it was offensive christians, jews, muslims - that's most of the planet.

She ended up going for a very conventional name.

Psammead · 05/10/2010 20:28

I think the UK system is quite ok. A quick look at the top ten over the last decade or so will tell you that people generally stay quite seinsible. In some countries with stricter rules, you get people trying to rebel with silly names. At least the UK doesn't have that problem.

If I understood it correctly, the German system requires that a name is obviously male or female - something i don't necessarily agree with. Just like Mmelindt i was a bit worried about registering dd with her totally unisex middle nMe, but encountered no problems.

Chil1234 · 05/10/2010 20:30

I'd ban 'Thomas' and also 'William'. In any random group of children there will be at least three of each and it gets very confusing.

gentlyfalling · 05/10/2010 20:30

My good friend wanted to call her child lucifer

that's a cracking idea Grin
(adds to list of baby names while DH isn't looking)

runningrach · 05/10/2010 20:36

A fixed list is too extreme but nothing wrong with a few rules as countries like switzerland have, outlawing offensive names (includes lucifer, judas, among others) and some other restrictions (e.g. brand names that were not originally people names like Mercedes or Ariel). Problem here is that even if registrars do have the right to veto I'm not sure whether they ever exercise that?

I think anything that is likely to cause huge problems for the child in future (e.g. an overwhelmingly female name for a boy or a whole stupid sentence that will never fit on a form) should not be allowed, nor, IMHO, should spellings that are just plain wrong!

Different acceptable versions are fine e.g. Rachel/Rachael or Catherine/Kathryn etc, but Pheobe and Racheal are just incorrect, and anything like Yzabeller is REALLY pushing it in my book. We do live in an age of standardised spelling for a reason.

runningrach · 05/10/2010 20:40

oh switzerland also insists that if you give your child a unisex name then it should have middle name that is clearly one gender or the other.

I'm not convinced about this rule, as some names change over time e.g. vivian, shirley, plus the example list on swiss babycentre (so prob not official) includes names like Kirsten which to me is totally females but is considered comparable with the german Karsten.

Plus I quite like unisex names and my dd will be born in switz and I won't be in the mood for a fight!

ImSpartacus · 05/10/2010 20:43

But..but without all the ridiculous names we would have find something new to mock!

jinglesticks · 05/10/2010 20:46

Allowing parents to give children stupid names is a useful way of letting other people know that such parents are wankers who need to be avoided at all costs.

Plus, if the children grow up not to be wankers they can always change or shorten their names, and if they do grow up to be wankers, the rest of us are warned by their stupid names - eveyone's a winner!

Spinkle · 05/10/2010 21:10

Let's not forget seasons: I had 2 Summers (one Summer, the other Sommer) and 1 Autumn in a class once. Same class I also had an Ocean and 2 Skys (skies?)

I have delighted in children called Amadeus and Filandra in my class also.

How lovely!!

I always but always seem to have a Kyle and Ryan in each and every class I teach. It's the law.
