UK acceptable Names List?

TiggyD · 05/10/2010 10:19

Am I being unreasonable to think that this country should have a list of names that you are allowed to call your children.
Susan, Claire, Duncan, Florence, David, Tiggy, Agnes, Alison and Sarah are all good acceptable names. Common regional, or multi-cultural names are also OK(Asok, Llewellyn etc).
But not fruit, vegetables, kitchen utensils, animals, fish, colours (except Scarlett), makes of car, Cheryl, things you find in the sky, feelings, random letters or nicknames. Double-barrelled names should also be out.
Anybody who's name isn't Rainbow-Kumquat or Trout-toaster agree with me?

faamily what about the really Scottish
Senga?

I really wanted to call DS2 Zebedee as he bounced around inside me like that flamin' Magic Roundabout character

Though I find it strange that some names "date"
Shirley mostly born 30s, 40s
Barbara mostly late 40s 50s
Arlene mostly 50s
Leanne 70s 80s
Tracey, Sharon 60s 70s
Kayleigh, Kylie 80s 90s

YABU especially since my daughter's name has been given as not liked (although not by TiggyD) so I'm now going to take this thread personally and thank the Lord I didn't choose something staid. Grin

Not sure, I have given my three children traditional jewish/hebrew names that are not particularly common here, although they are short and easy to pronounce, would have been very upset had they not been on the approved list.

YABU.

You are being very silly, stop worringing over others people's name choices, they can call their child whatever they like.

salizchap · 05/10/2010 22:04

In Spain they do this. The first name we chose for DS wasn´t allowed as it sounded too much like the catalan for corset!!! LOL I had no idea, and was really glad actually that they stopped possibly us ruining DS´s life. If we had stayed in Spain he would have got a ribbing for that one!

Takver · 05/10/2010 22:17

Not sure how strict they are about it, salizchap though - we didn't get questioned about dd's name (common English name, but very different spelling from the Spanish equivalent).

Mind you, it may have been because the registrar was too busy having a meltdown about the fact that we are married, but didn't have a Family Book (having had the temerity to get married before moving to Spain) :)

constantlytired · 05/10/2010 22:24

Was looking through this a few weeks ago, i actually feel quite sorry for a few of these kids
celebrity kids names

salizchap · 05/10/2010 22:31

Haha! They used to be very strict about it during franco´s time. Back then aparently you could only use good, catholic names like Jose, Maria, Jesus etc...

Now, as long as it won´t impact negatively on the child (ie, childhood taunts in the playground) it is fine. The name we had was arabic (xh is muslim), so even more unusual in Spain than an English one. In fact English names are becoming more and more fashionable over there, like Jonathan and Kevin. Our second choice (also arabic) was fine by the registrar's standards.

We didn't have a family book either at that time as we weren't yet married! And both with strange foreign names, what a kerfuffle!

I think it's the weird spellings of normal names that cause trouble.Isn't someone on the X factor called Tray-C or something? I imagine that she spends her time explaining it to people: "It's Tray-C, with an A. And a hyphen. Then a Capital C. Yeah, I know. I don't know why she called me it either."

maighdlin · 06/10/2010 11:11

my dd has a double barreled name but i love it. though where i used to work there was a lot of X-lee. They seemed to pick a name then add lee on the end of it. one family was jodi-lee, sophie-lee and curtis-lee. i found that weird.

my own in name is one of the ones no one can ever say or pronounce. same thing all the time "that's an unusual spelling." "yes its irish" "i have never seen it spelt like that before" "me neither". I think my mum was drunk when she decided it would be a good name. i have since sworn to name my children names everyone can spell.

Sillyshell · 06/10/2010 12:50

I can remember my Nan not being allowed to call my aunt Gwendaline in the 50's, the registar office wouldnt let her so she had to chose Gweneth instead. Seems silly nowdays!
