to not want my Mum to have alien encounters

Since I was quite young my Mum has told me and my siblings about her encounters with aliens, how they have abducted her etc. (she says its the grey ones with almond shaped black eyes) As a child I was petrified of the dark, in fact I was until I moved in with my DH aged 19. Blush

She tried to talk to me about it again the other day - in front of my DS who is 2.6. I quickly changed the subject, I really dont want her frightening my DC as well.

My Mum is generally a lovely relatively normal lady but I cant get my head around this. I dont want her to talk about anything like this around me as it freaks me out! My siblings are the opposite and are happy to chat with her about it.

Do any of you know someone who has had alien encounters or have you had them yourself?

Am I being unreasonable or would it scare the pants off you too?

Wouldn't scare me - I'd think she was bonkers. Do you believe her?

Truthfully? I think your mother probably has mental health issues.

If this is a serious post.

And if it is I would tell her on NO ACCOUNT is she to discuss with your children - ever.

I know it would really really frighten my dc (8 and 6)

I dont believe her - though I did when I was younger. I have spoken to my doctor about it and she said that many many people believe the same thing Hmm I just find it hard to connect my Mum who otherwise is normal (well just about) and the things she claims.

If she mentions it again in front of DC Im going to have to have the chat that Ive been putting off for years. I just dont want to offend her.

She clearly doesn't worry too much about causing you offence and she was quite relaxed about frightening you as a child (and your own child if you hadn't stepped in) .... so really don't feel too guilty about her feelings in return. Yes, people believe all kinds of irrational things ranging from mainstream religions, horoscopes and 'angels' through to conspiracy theories and beyond. If you'd really rather they kept their odd ideas to yourself then say so.

There is a theory that 'alien encounters' are a symptom of a mild form of epilepsy, coupled with having heard all the stories about aliens and their anal probes. This is probably true, particularly as the people it's happened to are genereally fuckwitted fairly suggestible.
Tell your mum that you don't want her scaring the children with this stuff and if she ignores your request, take the piss mercilessly.
