Not to spend an 20 minutes driving round in circles because he couldnt understand my directions, he didnt have a clue where he was going. Seriously.

He then (by pointing at the meter) tried to charge me extra for the privelige.

I told him where to stick it and knocked £1 off what I usually pay for my wasted time.

I think minicabs are different, but could be wrong. I've certainly been in a few where the route they take is circuitous to say the least.

We have a lot of taxi drivers around here who don't have English as their first language.

Most of them have satnavs, I write down the postcode. Sometimes we get a bit lost - usually the guys are apologetic and nice, friendly people.

A lot live in cramped housing and paying rent to their landlords who happen to be the owners of the taxi firms. What they've got left gets sent back to their families.

I'd have given him a tip.

Has anybody read "Hearts and Minds" by Amanda Craig?

OMG, it's depressing. I see your point OP, but, honestly, having read that book, I've not stiffed on a tip since.

jalopy · 01/10/2010 21:52

If he can spell, you're onto a winner.

"driving round in circles because he couldnt understand my directions,"

"places blame firmly on alcohol consumption"

do you recon the two are connected? Wink

nemofish · 01/10/2010 22:00

I'll have you know OP that Cockneys are very hardworking and do their best to learn english, even if their pronunciation isn't the best we should encourage their efforts.

They have come from an awful place, full of smog and folk living in cardboard boxes and people screaming 'faaaaamily' in the streets. Most people have nothing but jellied eels to eat and they want to make a better life for themselves and their families here. Please try to be more understanding, don't be a 'caaaaa!'

ohhh BC terrible mistake in the context. Mind you I did have a similar experience on the way to the River Cafe and we ended up slinging £15 his way for his trouble after he asked for £30 Grin
