Noisy neighbours.

Oh god, I feel like a complete curmudgeon and I don't know what to do.
My neighbours decided to have a party last night. It started about 9pm and there was a great deal of noise until 11pm-ish.
Although feeling a bit peed off, I held fire because I thought, 'It's not that late'.
Anyway it started again (music, shouting and screeching) at about 3am and continued until about 5am-ish.
I went around there at the time (understandably, not in good mood) knocked on door (they saw me but didn't answer door)to ask them to keep noise down.

I don't want to fall out with them, but I can't have them doing this (have to get up in mornings)and wrecking my sleep.
What can I do that is both legal and reasonable to stop them?

Sorry I suppose this should be in CHAT but I'm too whacked to think straight.

My neighbours prior to this lot had a small baby who cried a lot but I wasn't annoyed at them and said nothing at all because they couldn't help it, but this is different because the new lot can help it IYSWIM

environmental health at the council - they will have a weekend emergency number

at 3AM i would call the police tbh

I'd speak to them today and ask them, politely & pleasantly, that if they have any future parties would they agree to a suitable cut-off?... maybe something different for weekends and workdays? You'll keep to the same arrangement.. don't want to fall out... thanks for being understanding.... blah, blah, blah.

I think if you wade straight in with police or councils (neither of whom are especially keen to intervene with this kind of thing incidentally) then you're escalating matters more than necessary and bad feeling will result.
