to dread new neighbours moving in....

we own our house and either side (we're a mid terrace) are privately rented properties. In 5 years we have had a total of 8 new neighbours...

we have new ones moving in next door in a couple of weeks, i've not met them, but the (noisy) kind lady over the road said they had a boy and and girl aged about 7 and ten and they were behaving like wild dogs - her words not mine- now i'm terrified.

It is a new build property and we have had to put up with two young lads for the last 18 months, they shut slam doors up until 11pm at night, and they usually come in fri and sat night at 3am waking my two children with the shrieks of the birds they have brought back!

Previously to them we had a lovely couple, who unbeknown to us were actually operating a large scale cannabis factory!

previous to them we had a scarey man in a balaclava nearly knock my husband out because he got the two houses mixed up and it was actually the next door neighbour he was after for money... i could go on!

the thing is our area is very sought after not like you'd think for the likes of our previous neighbours.

i am being selfish but my girls are 1 and 2.5 and i'm dreading the sleepless nights if the neighbours turn out to be noisy- is there anything you wise mumsnetters can advise?

other than moving and soundproofing!

also add, my youngest is a light sleeper so i have resorted to putting a fan in the corner of her room on a fri and sat night to try and drown out the lads when them come in early hours...

Well presumably a 7 and 10YO are not going to be bringing women back at 3am are they?

hmm. tough one. I'm with you having experienced similar.

You could, on day one, go round and apologise in advance for early mornings as 'the walls are so thin, you can hear everything if you know what I mean, you just have to be so careful. But then you don't move into a terrace if you're an inconsiderate sort of person do you ..?'

The only other thing I have resprted to is playing unsuitable rap music, loudly, early in the morning after a distrubed night, just to make sure they woke up to enjoy every moment of their hangover from as early as I was up....Wink
but be careful, what goes around comes around...!

I can offer no advice but can offer sympathy.

We used to live next door to a let property and we had a right motley crue off nutjobs over the 6 years we were there. We had a woman who told me that she was on the run from her stalker before she'd unpacked the first box from her car, we had a twat who used to go out drink-driving and ended up knocking a poor guy off his bike a paralysing him, we had a looney-tune who used to leave her two massive wolfhounds howling inside the house for twelve hours a day (tiny two-bed terrace).

Finally, we got a lovely guy and his girlfriend move in and his 6 year old daughter lived with them for half the week. Nicest neighbours we ever had and no noise. I cried when they moved out!

YANBU, we live under a rented flat and the tenants change every year, it's a bit stressful waiting to see how noisy they are!

its terrible isn't it, its consuming me, and nosy lady from over the road hasn't helped! We've having the house valued on friday as i can't go through this again... forgot to say the lads were arrested for assaulting a police officer in our cul de sac after they were called (not by us) because of the noise from their house warming, my dd2 was 3 weeks at the time, i just sat there sobbing at 3am! its hard because i don't want to be rude, but both my dds go to bed at 7pm and sleep until 7am, they need their rest and i am very aware of the level of noise from them during the day, we have had a playroom built at the back of the house so it has no adjoining walls so if they do get up early are particulary noisy that day they are shoved in there.

I am dreading it but then they could be perfectly nice, but being told they behaved like wild dogs has sown the seeds of doubt... also i know its not my business but it is only a 2 bed terrace can mixed sex kids of that age sleep in the same room? i am sure i heard somewhere they shouldn't... ours in 3 bed as we converted the loft... still moving though!

Can sympathise sounds like you've had some nightmare neigbours and having a noisy neighbour myself I know how dreadful it can be.

Am curious how children can behave like wild dogs though?! Were they running around excitedly and exploring?? All you can do is wait and see I guess. Think I would rather have dcs that age next door than a baby or a teenager.

i feel for you, but wait and see... they might be ok- just in a spin because they are moving iyswim.

We are moving out of our property at the moment because of nightmare neighbours- so far having the neighbours from hell have cost us over 550k (ok some of that went on the new house Wink, but moving costs a LOT of money) so try if poss to work round it.

no apparently they were hanging off our tree! Grin and they threw their crisp wrapper on the floor Shock!!!!

regarding the birds, they made so much noise my dd2 woke up terrified, it was hilarious though ... bless them, my dh said he wanted to high 5 him the next day! but joking apart a 4am shag is pretty disturbing to a sleeping child!

Behaving like wild dogs could just be her interpretation of 2 excited children looking around their new home. When we looked at this (rented) house i bet our neighbours groaned. We pulled up in a tatty car, tumbled out of the car screeching at DS2 who was running off down the cul de sac while DS1 was being very loud.

They were just excited because we lived in a really tiny flat before hand with no garden so this house felt like a palace!

Can I add as someone who rents (hopefully not for long - mortgage approved, offer accepted - woo hoo!) that there's nowt quite as fun as an entire street deciding before you move in that you're going to be the scum of the earth from the "to let" board outside instead of the "for sale" one.

We went through it here with looks of suspicion as we moved in (they really didn't like the rented house in the street idea - it was only being rented as property in this street is hard to sell because of access issues) and it was crud.

Having said that - one friendly neighbour did welcome us, the others thawed out very rapidly and we must like it since we're buying the house three doors down the street... but it wasn't a nice feeling to move in to already be prejudged as "trouble" because at the time we didn't have a shiny new mortgage.

I'm now having fun smiling quietly watching them speculate and headscratch and fret about who's bought the house with the sold board up next to it (some of them know) - it's flipping hilarious to watch!

emptyshell i know what you're saying we actually rented the house on the other side of us and fell in love with the street and then brought this house! I have just had dreadful experience, worst being the cannabis factory, when my dd1 was only 6 months sleeping a wall away from what i now know was the bedroom used for drying and storing masses of the drug! I just feel stressed out, i know i am not being fair as they are probably lovely people but i have big issues with noise! i don't shush my girls 24/7 though, but i have always asked the elderly neighbour whether the level of play noise is aceptable and he says it fine albeit he's a touch deaf!!

To be honest - the cannabis factory probably did wonders for your heating bills! (I used to work for an eleccy company and you could actually spot some of them just from looking at their energy consumption because they need the house so warm to do it)

I always view it noise goes both ways - unless you're going to live like a mouse, you can't expect other people to. Our neighbours we share a wall with aren't the most obliging people in the street - and they do like their music loud for a couple of hours in the afternoon - but I'm sure we make noise that annoys them so as long as it's not excessive - it's give and take really.

We had some horrors in the past though - the one where the kid was learning the trombone being a noteable one.
