Dad ogling pg 3 girls in playground

Strolled into school this morning with DS1 (6) to find a dad "reading" pg 3 of the Sun ( norks were in full view of the Year 2 line up ).

I thought this a tad inappropriate and asked him to turn the page, but he was really put out and huffed and puffed at me.

Tell me I was not being unreasonable.

BeerTricksPotter, didn't even look at the nether regions. He was sitting down, paper flat on lap.

Oh, popped back to see how this was going, not that I thought there was much chance of either side agreeing.

But I cannot let this one go. Herbeattitude, there was no way, no way on earth you can say 'this man was showing a picture of an objectified woman'

That is just not accurate. He was reading a newspaper. If the editor of said rag included a page 3 pic, the responsibility lies with him, and also the press association and PCC.

When I read a paper in the playground, often there are shocking photos of corpses, nudity and many other things unsuitable for children. But they cannot usually see to my height, and if they tried to, I could tell them to mind their manners or buy their own paper. I would not be considered to be 'showing' anything. And neither was this man. aYou make it sound like he had a projector and lights.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 21/09/2010 21:36

Intrigued now as to what most parents would find acceptable at school. What about a blow-up sex-doll as a room decoration? One of Madonna's full frontal pics on the wall? Topless dinner ladies? Male teachers wearing clothes only on their top half in hot weather? What about "Jordan's Topless Science Show"? This at sports day?

Who knew?

It wasn't a school thing though. It was a man reading a newspaper, not a school santioned decoration.

You can exaggerate all you like, no one here really thinks porn and kids go, that is not the issue. Most who disagree with the op disagree with her asking him to turn the page.

lemonbergamot · 21/09/2010 21:38

YANBU- I remember my Dad coming home with The Sport when I was 8 or 9 and I was mortified!!

ChippingIn · 21/09/2010 21:38

He was reading a newspaper - the OP happened to see the Page 3 girl & take offence. I bet the kids hadn't even seen it/her - far too busy playing with friends, to care what newspaper some Dad is reading and if they did, they'd think 'boobs' ! If he was unfolding the Playboy centrefold and drawing attention to what he was reading fair enough - but FGS reading the paper??

Some of you really do need to get a sense of perspective.

As for going to the Head and asking her to tell parents not to bring porn into the school... then having to explain that what you actually mean is a newspaper?! Yeahm good luck with that!

and repeat of what Clumsymum said!

scottishmummy · 21/09/2010 21:40

what a bizarre disjointed post. a rubber willy to signify what exactly.hardly an extension of a man reading sun in playground.but indicative of ott hyperbolic response.someone reading sun in school yard isnt likely to have p7 teachers getting tits out or hoopla with an erect rubber willy

LOL at projector and lights.

So you would see no problem with a bloke reading nuts, or showing page 3 in your playground then perfumed?

And reading White People are Better or whatever the BNP rag is called?

TBH I would find it a bit odd if a member of staff was habitually reading graphic material in a playground.

In fact, more than odd. As a school governor, I would be having a word with the HT. Hmm

anotherglass · 21/09/2010 21:42

Sorry BTP but the lady is not for turning!

A few posters are starting to push my buttons so I am calling it a night.

Cheerio..

scottishmummy · 21/09/2010 21:43

members of staff are subject to appraisal, expected standards, and gtc regards behaviour

sun reading memebers of public are not

BeenBeta · 21/09/2010 21:44

I do not like the fact that newspapers contain pictures of semi naked women. I dont see why they need to be there and more especially where my children may see them. I also support the LGBG campaign.

However, I agree with what Ladyanonymous/Clumsymum have said. A person going about their lawful business should not be harrassed in this way.

I do however find what HullyGully said @ 20:48:08 to be extremely offensive, gratuitous and unecessary.

sethstarkaddersmum · 21/09/2010 21:45

well of course, there was my thread with the Nazi flag on the car in the school carpark.
I came and posted on AIBU because only me and one other mum seemed to have a problem with it Confused

MN was, IIRC, almost entirely on my side (apart from the ones who thought I hadn't made enough fuss).

I would love to know how the mums at my school who thought a Swastika was ok would feel about page 3 of the Sun - could go either way.
Can't imagine any of the dads at our school being so crass as to do it though! And there are plenty of battleaxe mums and grannies who would give them what for.

scottishmummy · 21/09/2010 21:48

oh law what a rotten analogy

sethstarkaddersmum · 21/09/2010 21:51

it's not an analogy SM - E&M was asking what parents would find acceptable and I said that the parents at my school found Nazi flags acceptable, which was a partial answer to her question.
I didn't call anyone a Nazi.

anotherglass · 21/09/2010 21:51

BTP, thanks for your comment.
To tell you the truth the dad was easy to handle compared with some posters on this board. It is a shame that myself and others who share my opinions have been labelled fascists etc. The attacks have become a little too personal so that is why I am signing off, grabbing my Guardian and going to bed.

NotEnoughTime · 21/09/2010 21:52

Just to reiterate Elephants I wouldn't expect it from an ADULT in a school playground. Of course CHILDREN may have an interest in naked bodies, that is only normal and I have no problem with that. However I do have a problem with pornography and hate that our children are exposed to it on a daily basis.

HerBeatitude · 21/09/2010 21:53

I'm sure some of the parents at our school would find the BNP rag acceptable.

In fact, thinking about it, some of the literate ones probably read it.

NotanOtter · 21/09/2010 21:55

YANBU how revolting
tell him to go home for a ham-shandy.
his son will be really proud if he keeps that up in year 6 Hmm

scottishmummy · 21/09/2010 21:55

a tenuous linking of sun readership & nazi=godwins law. a loose unnecessary association to try prove some (what) point

perfumedlife · 21/09/2010 21:56

Who said anything about a member of staff? Have I missed that? I thought we were talking about a dad.

I don't look to see what people are reading. Too busy with my nose in a book. However, I was taught to read the enemy, read their propoganda, their press, see what they were planning and plotting. I would never assume it was my business to ask someone to hide their book/mag/pamphlet , unless it was very large and noticable, then it would be offensive.

But it wasn't. It was a tabloid newspaper.

HerBeatitude · 21/09/2010 21:56

Apart from anything else, it's just bad fucking manners. Do people really see nothing wrong with this?

This isn't about whether you agree with page 3 or not. It's about what is appropriate in a school, around little children. I don't think there's anythign wrong with drinking stella. But it is pure savage to come into a school playground and drink it as you wait to collect your kid. Just like looking at soft porn is. Do posters really genuinely believe that this sort of yobbishness is OK?
