To think it's fine to have 2 bathrooms & a downstairs loo in a 4 bed house?

We currently live in a 3 bedroom house that has one bathroom. We are in the process of extending the house & we will get a new ensuite bathroom plus a downstairs loo. So we will have 3 loos in total. I think it's normal to have an ensuite for a master bedroom and a downstairs loo seems the usual thing these days too, but my dh thinks otherwise & keeps saying why do we need 3 loos?! He thinks we should ditch the loo & ensuite & have bigger /more bedrooms instead.

Aibu?

YANBU. I don't understand why the UK is so stingy on bathrooms. When I was growing up we had as many bathrooms as bedrooms, so no sharing of bathrooms, except for my parents of course. Each person cleaned their own bathroom, same as you would your bedroom. Bliss.

Thankyou for all the responses, I think that's the thumbs up for the ensuite & downstairs loo from all of you (bar one!).

So I now just need to go shopping! :o

We have a 4 bedroomed house with a family bathroom, an en suite and a downstairs loo and all are needed. A 5 bedroomed house needs at least the same.

OrmRenewed · 19/09/2010 20:15

Fine if you've got the room. Woulsn't be prepared to sacrifice any existing space for an en-suite though.

bethjeff · 19/09/2010 20:22

You are so right... we have two family bathrooms and two ensuites in a four bed and it's great for when guests are around.
Means you only have to clean 'their' bathroom lol!

BalloonSlayer · 20/09/2010 09:38

Upstairs laundry room sounds fab.

3isthemagicnumber · 20/09/2010 09:56

We have a 5 bed house, 3 DS and us, and only 1 bathroom in whole house.

(gets coat and shuffles off, hanging head in shame)

PatriciaHolm · 20/09/2010 10:28

There are 4 of us and we have 4 toilets Grin Will be invaluable when the DC get to bathroom-hogging teenagerhood!

I love having visitors - we have a 5 bed house so we're usually the destination for family get-togethers -so more toilets are invaluable!

hairytriangle · 20/09/2010 11:26

Yanbu but you should compromise with your oh. I'd go for a downstairs loo and one bathroom especially if you have dc. An ensuite is a luxury.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 20/09/2010 11:37

It depends how big your bedrooms are.

strawberrycake · 20/09/2010 11:59

In East London it's largely victorian/ edwardian terraces and I don't seem to know hardly anyone with more than one loo/ bathroom! I grew up in a 5 bed house and before I go married lived there with dh, 2 sisers, 1 brother plus gf and parents and we weren't bothered as we'd never known any different. I now happily live in a place with one loo/ bathroom myself. Is this actually unusual? Surely they're rarely in use at once and are a nightmare to keep clean, I get bored enough constantly cleaning ONE bathroom.

MorrisZapp · 20/09/2010 12:41

Clearly your DH is a stranger to Sarah Beeny! 'The family market expects one bathroom to every two bedrooms' etc.

I grew up with one loo in a fairly big house and thought nowt of it, but then loads of things we grew up with aren't what we want for our own families now.

Assuming you aren't planning to have loads more kids, why does your DH want 5 bedrooms - if it's about resale then the ensuite is an absolute no brainer.

I should know - I'm addicted to property porn :)

humanfraggle · 20/09/2010 13:42

I used to live in a house that had 2 bedrooms and 3 loos! We had a family bathroom, an en-suite AND a downstairs loo.

It was a little excessive, but I loved it!

roundthebend4 · 20/09/2010 14:02

We have 4/5 bedrooms fifth used as computer room

Hav full bathroom bath seperate shower wc ,on samefloor another seperate wc both ground as dormer bungalow. Then upstairs one rouble bedroom with ensuite shower room

I love having extra bathrooms so usefull in early mornings

MorrisZapp · 20/09/2010 14:11

Forgive my endless citing of David Lodge, but your DP reminds me of Vic Wilcox's dad in Nice Work, who is scandalised by the number of loos in his son's executive home, and regards them as an 'incitement to unnecessary peeing' :)

By common, unspoken agreement neither Vic or his wife use the en-suite for er, big business.

Vic is convinced that if there was a perfume named 'en-suite', his wife would wear it.

squiby2004 · 20/09/2010 14:31

We have a downstairs loo, a family bathroom and our bedroom has an en suite. I wouldn't be without my en suite now and when we move the new house will have to have one also. No downstairs loo would also b a deal breaker for me.

Sn0wflake · 20/09/2010 15:21

Have just moved into a 4 bed with en-suite, bathroom and downstairs loo....other than you have to clean a lot of bathrooms it's pretty good. Christmas will be much easyer now.

roundthebend4 · 21/09/2010 04:24

A downstairs loo is the very minimum would want in top of family bathroom ,ds1 and ds2 have the upstairs room with ensuite and have to say means my other bathrooms stay cleaner and less smellier there not allowed to use them other than quick wee onset mean mum emotion

mathanxiety · 21/09/2010 04:59

Whoever had the idea of the upstairs laundry room is a genius. I would not only do the ensuite and the downstairs plus one other bathroom, I would have the upstairs laundry too -- all you need is a small laundry closet really, with washer and dryer, maybe the same plumbing.

When you have teenagers you'll appreciate the bathrooms and even wish for more, and the laundry upstairs too if you do it.

roundthebend4 · 21/09/2010 07:20

Yep I'm fortunate have bungalow and love how easy it is when on same level to get washing away no taking it upstairs

Portofino · 21/09/2010 07:28

We have 4 beds and a study, a downstairs loo, upstairs loo, bathroom with bath and double vanity unit, and a separate shower room with a wash basin. And an upstairs laundry room - which is the most fantastic idea ever.
