To think it's fine to have 2 bathrooms & a downstairs loo in a 4 bed house?

We currently live in a 3 bedroom house that has one bathroom. We are in the process of extending the house & we will get a new ensuite bathroom plus a downstairs loo. So we will have 3 loos in total. I think it's normal to have an ensuite for a master bedroom and a downstairs loo seems the usual thing these days too, but my dh thinks otherwise & keeps saying why do we need 3 loos?! He thinks we should ditch the loo & ensuite & have bigger /more bedrooms instead.

octopus, it depends on the shower and your boiler. If they're electric showers then they heat their own water so no problem. If you've got a big hot water tank then again, no problem (until you use up all the water). If you've got a combi boiler then you may find the temperature drops when the second shower is turned on.

To get around this fit thermostatic controls to the showers. Then it will reduce the flow of water instead of dropping the temperature.

YANBU. I have 3 bathrooms and a downstairs loo (ner, ner ne ner, ner!) and would not be without my downstairs loo for all the visitors who use it. I only need concentrate on keeping that one spotless (no need to keep frantically clearing up damp towels/hair in the plughole etc) when anyone pops by. You will need to buy lots of loo paper though.

expatinscotland · 17/09/2010 13:28

YANBU.

I fucking hate having only one bathroom.

hystericalmum · 17/09/2010 13:32

am currently looking to buy another house.

All the 4 beds I'm looking at have a family bathroom, an ensuite & a downstairs loo.

Go for it!

We currently have 1 family bathoom in our 4 bed.

Mornings are interesting. Hmm

diddl · 17/09/2010 13:34

I´ve also never been bothered by an ensuite, but wouldn´t mind another shower.

We have a large bathroom & a guest WC.

Bathroom consists of toilet, 2 sinks, bidet, bath & separate shower-perhaps we should reconfigure & split it somehow!

I hear more wee noises while watching TV from upstairs loo than the downstairs one because the bathroom is directly above our living room.

(See previous posts re loud pissing DH).

However our last extractor fan in the downstairs loo was off a 747 engine as far as I can make out, and carried on for about 15 minutes after you had turned the light out. So I got into the habit of going in for a wee without putting the light on, to avoid wakening the Mighty Fan. This meant leaving the door open so I could ahem see what I was doing, so I may have been guilty of a bit of audibility myself.

Appletrees · 17/09/2010 14:15

oh no the wee noise through the floor

yes all toilets should be outside, maybe underground and possibly up the road

BalloonSlayer · 17/09/2010 14:19

I would like one of those "BBC Sound Effects" chain-pull flushes though, so that the whole street knows that you've just "been."

Martine McCutcheon should get one. Then she wouldn't have to do a prime time advert to say she's just managed to have a big poo.

YANBU. I grew up in a house with 3 toilets and 3 people.

Now I have 2 toddlers and one loo. I don't even want to potty train DD because of it, I have IBS so do rather need the loo a lot Blush.

oldraver · 17/09/2010 17:04

OCTOPUS..... We dont have a problem with the shower going hot/cold if another one is run as they are thermostaically controlled (think most are these days ?) but we do have a problem with pressure. We have a pressurized system and get a really good shower but it does drop if anotheris on. We cant runa bath and shower at the same time

I have 5 bedrooms over 3 floors. On the top floor are 2 bedrooms with a shower room. Middle floor has 3 bedrooms with our room being ensuite and there is a bathroom on this floor. Ground floor has a downstairs loo.

MadameCastafiore · 17/09/2010 17:29

We have four beds - an ensuite (with a bath) and a family batromm with a huge walk in shower (well will have when the screen turns up) and a downstairs cloakroom.

The more bathrooms the better IMO.

Superfly · 17/09/2010 17:40

YANBU. We have 4 bed 1 bathroom, 1 shower room and downstairs loo.
Moved from a 3 bed with downstairs bathroom. Absolute pain in the arse when I was pregnant and up and down to the loo every hour on the hour. Some nights I even slept downstairs to shorten the journey.
I had never had a downstairs loo before moving to this house - now can't imagine not having it especially when toilet training the DS> And great as not so far from the tv when I need a wee

imahappycamper · 17/09/2010 20:17

We have four beds, one bathroom and downstairs loo, which was normal when house was built. Estate agents now say people want a four bed house to have an en suite as well and ours will be harder to sell than houses in the area with en suite and family bathroom. (Our bathroom is good size with separate shower and bath, but apparently that isn't enough nowadays.) So if you think you might ever want to sell the more bathrooms the better.

ByTheSea · 17/09/2010 20:22

YANBU!

bluecardi · 17/09/2010 20:27

Don't see the point of ensuite bathrooms with no window

weasle · 17/09/2010 20:50

yanbu
we have 4/5 beds and, i suppose, 5 loos.

en suite fantastic for night time wees, early morning or late night showers. our spare room has a loo and sink. family bathroom, downstairs loo we put in and also an almost never used old outside loo in our tiny yard.

But having outside of house painted so workmen can use outside loo. also good for summer potty training.

i think en suite really good to have, but i am lucky and have cleaner. no noises from our downstairs loo, sturdy victorian walls.

walk in wardrobe a great idea

noddyholder · 17/09/2010 20:56

I would ditch the ensuite and make it an upstairs laundry room

FrameyMcFrame · 17/09/2010 21:10

'no poo in the ensuite rule'

I had to read that twice to make sure I wasn't seeing things! Grin

emptyshell · 17/09/2010 21:12

If you had to live with my husband - you'd want a separate bathroom in a separate country from him.

FrameyMcFrame · 17/09/2010 21:17

I just think it's intriguing to see how other people have rules about things I'd never even thought about!
It's an education!

SlightlyJaded · 17/09/2010 23:52

same here, me DH and 2 DC's
Four beds, one family bathroom, one ensuite and a downstairs loo
And on the odd occasion, there is still one of us standing with our knees crossed...

cece · 17/09/2010 23:55

I have 4 toilets.

My neighbour has 5 toilets! Shock

And I think family bathroom, ensuite and downstairs loo perfectly standard in a lot of areas. (that I know of)
