to get fed up of people leaving their stuff on my desk while they go to the toilet?

I have the dubious pleasure of sitting right outside the toilet door at work. Our office is a bit like a long corridor with the kitchen area at one end and the toilets in the middle.

People are always leaving their cups/glasses/plates/cutlery etc on my desk/printer while they go into the loo.

Its not like they can't take them in with them, there's a bit by the sink they could put them on so they wouldn't have the hold them and pee or anything!

It doesn't bother me as much as it used to, but I still think its a bit rude and they get in the way. I bet they wouldn't like it if I came and left stuff on their desk while I 'just popped out to the shop' or soemthing!

LOL It would drive me nuts! Grin

It makes me think of Peggy in Mad Men when she had the photocopier in her "office".

BuntyPenfold · 15/09/2010 12:25

Sorry!

QueenSconetta · 15/09/2010 12:28

I thought about hiding them, then saying I'd never seen them but thought that a little childish.

I also though about knocking them on to the floor 'accidentally' but thought better of that too.

Perhaps you could wee in them?

YANBU to be annoyed. It would annoy me, too.

bumpybecky · 15/09/2010 12:34

can you re-arrange the things on your desk so that this space is filled with something?

either that or get a spiky pot plant!

hattyyellow · 15/09/2010 12:36

I'd move your in-tray or something else bulky to that corner nearest the loo - and somehow manage to make a barrier of things around the outside of your desk. It would drive me mad too!

StealthPolarBear · 15/09/2010 12:36

ooh no that would annoy me!

Maybe just a "Are these for me?" as they walk off

kreecherlivesupstairs · 15/09/2010 12:39

Put a saucer on your desk with some loose change in, you can either claim you are Mme Pipi or charging for rental.

Roffle

Barbed wire in loops?
patrolled by snipers?

Mowiol · 15/09/2010 12:44

bumpybecky's idea would work - sort of cluttering up your desk with pointy things that they can't lay items on.
Or an electronic pressure pad with klaxons that blare out when items are placed on it?

fedupofnamechanging · 15/09/2010 12:48

Ask if you can move your desk somewhere else. Failing that, simply tell people not to do it and put their stuff on the floor if they do. People probably just don't think that this happens all day long and is getting on your nerves.

girlywhirly · 15/09/2010 13:37

Pot up a whole load of spider plants, tell everyone you are improving the air quality as the plants absorb all the toxins/emissions. Make sure you cover the space that normally gets stuff dumped on. If they still try to dump stuff, say please don't dump stuff on my desk, I have to work here!

Seriously, it can't be very nice being right next to the toilet door, could you get some sort of room divider or the like placed between it and your desk?

bigchris · 15/09/2010 13:41

I hate our loo at work
it's right near desks too, there's only one and you can hear everything that goes on in it, I find it mortifying

QueenSconetta · 15/09/2010 13:43

Being next to the loo is not that bad actually. It was definitely a perk when I was Pg! It also means I can plan when I go to the loo so I can avoid having to chat to people I don't want to talk to in there Grin

QS sounds like you need more sleep! You must get up really early ... Wink

Can you ask for a little table or something to go outside the loo for these things, so that there is a place for people to leave stuff - but I suppose they also think you are 'keeping an eye' on it for them?!

It would drive me batty and I'd have to do something about it - even if you tell your boss it's distracting you from what you are trying to get on with!

Hassled · 15/09/2010 13:50

But why are they drifting towards the loo carrying stuff? Surely if you're at your desk with your mug of whatever and need a wee, you leave the mug on your desk rather than carry it towards the loos with you? Weird.

I agree that you need more stuff. Every last inch of your desk needs to covered. Fluffy mascots, those little pet rocks (do they still exist?) - just festoon your desk with crap so there's no space.

mrsruffallo · 15/09/2010 13:51

Kill Them

BalloonSlayer · 15/09/2010 13:59

Put it in the bin and say airily "Oh was that yours? I didn't know what it was and why on earth it had appeared on my desk so I got rid of it" < point to bin >

ChippingIn its not too bad when DP doesn't shout at the football and wake the baby, lol Grin

Hassled they do it just to annoy me From where their desks are the loo is on the way to the kitchen so rather than go back for their stuff they bring it with them

QS I would have to do something so that I could get up at 6. 6 is morning, 5.30 is night time! Bleurgh!!

Yep - you need to get a nice little table for outside the toilets and a nice little sign for your desk.... something like 'Please don't leave your shit on my desk' should do!!
