He is constantly repeating back to me words that we say differently. I am a northerner, he is a southerner and he is constantly pulling me up about the way I say words Hmm. Cheeky sod.

The on that I find ver odd is that down south the words but and put don't rhyme!

I had to make a Southern friend say them to me so I can actually hear any form of difference.

To me they still rhyme!

The missing out of The is an odd one. Yes, it is missing - but there is something else there instead. But not a sound as such, more of a pause, but again not an actual pause. It coems directly after the word before the "the". I can't explain it, but when us Northerners say the sentence, it is there.

t' is for to though, def not the.

theres no such thing as ONE "northern" accent though.

In some parts "going t'shops" sounds more like going TUT shops, and the TUT/TOOT is an abbreviation of "To the" (eg north yorks)

in lancashire,or parts of it, they say going th' shop, abbreviatinng the but not having "to" in there at all

oh dear, I am rambling.....Blush

pinkbasket you have to make him 'care' - NOW. Otherwise you are going to have one stroppy, do-as-he-pleases teenager who has no respect for you. Tell him it is not his place to correct your language/dialect and that it is rude & you will not tolerate it. Remove 'stuff' (games/tv/bike/wii = whatever), ground him, take pocket money off of him - whatever.... you need to take control now or this is going to get out of hand.
