.......after having logged on to compare the market . com, to look up quotes for insuring our new car, I have some woman from a major UK insurer on the phone asking what I thought of their quote. I had only just got as far as emailing the list to myself, so DH and I can discuss it this evening, and there she is on the phone when TBH I had not even registerd that her companys name was on the list, never mind how their quote compared with other options!

AND she asked for me by my christian name - which pisses me right off too. Its MrsPerpetually to you! Grrr!

This is why I always enter an incorrect telephone number when using these sites, one digit wrong so I can pass it off later as a mistake if needs be :-)

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 13/09/2010 13:50

I hope you use a different wrong number each time though, or some poor sod is going to be sick to death of people asking if they are YOU, tyler!! LOL

But then they end up harassing some other poor soul tyler and they have all your details. I tend to use the phone number 01234 56789.

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 13/09/2010 13:52

really? but thats even worse, you cant claim a typo th

I am obviously too honest

tyler80 · 13/09/2010 13:56

It's a mobile number that's not in use so nobody is getting harassed.

hugglymugly · 13/09/2010 14:05

You could use a fictitious number, as they do in TV programmes:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_numbers_in_the_United_Kingdom#Fictitious_numbers

Either the code 01632, or "In Coronation Street, the fictional Manchester suburb of Weatherfield uses the unallocated range (0161) 715 xxxx".

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 13/09/2010 14:06

They should realise that 0123456789 isn't actually a phone number. You shouldn't have to give your number at all.

NoahAndTheWhale · 13/09/2010 14:08

01234 is the code for Bedford

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 13/09/2010 14:16

Grin No one's going to have the phone number 0123456789 though (might test it later)

Casserole · 13/09/2010 15:07

There's not enough digits. It would have to be 01234 567890 in Bedford

MisterW · 13/09/2010 15:20

We have a house rule. Any company that phones us without us asking them to doesn't get our business. Anyone who does phone is told this rule then told to f**k off.

AllGoodNamesGone · 13/09/2010 16:05

I have an old mobile that I keep in the car for emergencies.

I give them the number for that Grin

bigfootbeliever · 13/09/2010 16:09

Yep - I deliberately don't pick companies that call us without asking and I tell them that too.

Dont worry about being rude to them - they shouldn't be harrasing you!

MrsC2010 · 13/09/2010 16:13

Yes, this bugs me too. If I wanted to buy, I would do so online, using the 'Buy Now' button! Leave me alone!

oldraver · 13/09/2010 16:22

They also sell your number to companies that retrieve costs from charges... Debt Busters are one and I have had another one phone me

When I realised who they were I ignored calls and they must of rung 20 odd times

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 13/09/2010 17:52

OP here, reporting back to say they phoned again, one hour later! a bloke this time, still asking for me by my christian name, which I have never encountered before and is just cheeky IMO

I repeated that we would look at the quotes and decide

if they call again they will be getting an earful, and I dont mind telling them they will NOT be getting our custom simply for the pestering!

Having lived in Bedford I just had to try 01234 567 890 .

"The number you have dialed has not been recognised. Please try again"

Grin

I recon that's a fantastic phone number to have, you'd never forget it.

EricNorthmansmistress · 13/09/2010 19:01

YANBU I don't give my real number anymore either. I told them to back off and let me think about it for a minute!
