stubbornhubby · 08/09/2010 09:03

A friend of mine told me at the weekend that this will make me an extremist...anyway we had a long thread about this in July and a few people said they'd be keen, like me, to wave a banner as he parades around the country.

There's a big march in London on Sat 18th, Hyde park Corner @ 1.30pm
details here
www.protest-the-pope.org.uk/

Also, if you live in SW London, a Small demo in Strawberry Hill on Fri 17th @9am. (NB official visti website says you will not be able to see the pope arrriving/departing SMUC - I think he must be using helicopter. Or apparating Smile)

Have i missed something? is there a history carried over from another thread? what warrents a personal attack out of the blue?

newwave · 17/09/2010 00:12

You doth protest to much, you (quite rightly) called the pope a nobber :o

Tortington · 17/09/2010 00:14

well i remain perplexed. please spell it out

newwave · 17/09/2010 00:18

perplexed :)

Tortington · 17/09/2010 00:19

so you don't know either

newwave · 17/09/2010 00:23

No, other than you "insulted" the pope and maybe upset someone (not me I cant stand the man)

donkeyderby · 17/09/2010 00:48

Go home, Pappa, back to your nest of vipers.

curryfreak · 17/09/2010 08:49

I dont think the pontiff is listening somehow. He looked perfectly happy and relaxed yesterday in Scotland.
I'm sure it's a huge dissapointment to lots of you, but hey ho, you never know there might be a scuffle or two in London today.
I bet he couldn't sleep last might with the worry!

Jaybird37 · 17/09/2010 09:10

As far as the issue of Statehood and child sex abuse scandals go, I think this says it all

review of Geoffrey Robertson QC's book

And then there is the issue of discrimination against homosexuals and women, and the despicable lies about the effectiveness of condoms in preventing the spread of HIV

Dr Ben Goldacre

So many reasons to protest, it is difficult to pick just one.

ISNT · 17/09/2010 09:11

I give up.

This smugness "ha our bloke has condemned hundreds of thousands to death (through HIV and suicide and so on) and protects child molesters but HAHAHA he's still laughing.

I don't understand the attitudes on this thread. In RL I talk about this with my friends a lot (as a bunch of lapsed & practicing RC people) and every single one of them condemns/struggles with the actions of the church over these issues and the role the current pope had in the cover-up of the child abuse.

I don't know anyone like some of you in RL, and for that I am very grateful. I prefer my friends compassionate and considerate, rather than triumphalist and gleefully putting the boot in. People who have been victims of abuse will be protesting. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA how funny that the pope dones't give a fuck.

ISNT · 17/09/2010 09:13

Some people had long banners with the faces of abused children on them, in Edinburgh

"I bet he couldn't sleep last might with the worry!£

Yes I'm sure he slept very soundly, unlike the victims. I am also very sure that he has not lost a moments sleep over any of this.

How FANTASTIC!

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 17/09/2010 09:20

Curryfreak - could you have a word with your boss about the quality of his research? The Nazi's weren't atheists. I'm appalled at this gross slur on Nazism.

Marjoriew · 17/09/2010 09:24

Absolutely, ISNT! I was physically sick watching it yesterday, especially listening to Mario Conti.
Of course, they slept easily in their beds last night, after all, they've being doing it for decades.
At 62, I hope I never see another event like this in my lifetime.

chocolatestar · 17/09/2010 09:26

Edinburgh was a circus yesterday. God knows how much money they spent protecting one man whose church failed to protect thousands of children. Disgusting.

melikalikimaka · 17/09/2010 09:31

Head of state, end of. At least he preaching peace instead of hate. I'm warming to him slowly. It was £25 per tkt in Birmingham, wonder what it was in Glasgow? I'm gonna try and see him along the road. Poo poo to the protesters, but I do feel sorry for the abused children.

curryfreak · 17/09/2010 09:33

People are perfectly entitled to protest, just as people should be allowed to practice their faith withouth persecution.
Insults and snide remarks about catholics will not make a jot of difference to those who want to go and see the pope over the next few days.

curryfreak · 17/09/2010 09:36

The cost to the taxpayer agguement is so lame. You know people are really clutching at straws when they trot this one out. There are plenty of things i would prefer my taxes not to go towards, but i dont have a choice in the matter. That's just tough though isin't it.

melikalikimaka · 17/09/2010 09:37

This was one Catholic child who wasn't abused.

ISNT · 17/09/2010 09:37

Triumpalism and glee also acceptable?

I don't think i've made any snide remarks about catholics. I have quite a lot to say about the hierarchy and the man at the top, but that's not the same thing.

melikalikimaka · 17/09/2010 09:39

How much did it cost when Nelson Mandela came here, anyone know?

ISNT · 17/09/2010 09:40

? melika

Is that supposed to balance out the ones who were? Does it counteract marjoriew's story on this thread and render it irrelevant?

I wasn't abused either, but lots were. That is horrifying, surely?

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 17/09/2010 09:42

curryfreak - How is it clutching at straws? We are paying a lot more for his visit than we do for other heads of state - most heads of state don't go on promotional tours. I've no problem with his visit - it's clearly important to a lot of people. If the faith based exceptionalism I object to.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 17/09/2010 09:42

Anyway, what about the poor research?

HouseOfBamboo · 17/09/2010 09:43

Maybe the Queen was being ironic when she said:

"We are all aware of the special contribution of the Roman Catholic Church particularly in its ministry to the poorest and most deprived members of society, its care for the homeless and for the education provided by its extensive network of schools."

Marjorie - your posts (and the experiences of others like you) are always what come to mind when I hear things like this. I don't know how people can talk about the Church's 'good works' without irony or qualification tbh.

curryfreak · 17/09/2010 09:47

The pope was asked here by the queen. If she asked him here then it is a state visit. If it is a state visit, then he or anyone else for that matter is entitled to have protection. End Of.
