when is a pedophile not a pedophile

The age at which a woman/girl in Japan may have sex is 13.
In some other southeast asian countrys the age is 14 or 15 and in some countrys there is no age limit as long as the girl is married and in some countrys that can be as young as 8
If a man in England has sex with a 13 yr old he will be regarded as a pedo, but if he goes to Japan where it is legal should he be classed as a pedo? Or not because he is not breaking the law

I know I looked it up. That covers some people described as paedophiles. I'm just asking for some more varied terminology FFS.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 07/09/2010 14:57

In terms of whether or not someone is a paedophile though, the issue is surely the level of physical development of the child and not the age as such.

TrillianAstra · 07/09/2010 15:18

Has anyone mentioned ephebophilia yet - for those who like their partners to be pubescent but not pre-pubescent (see definition of paedophilia).

ShirleyKnot · 07/09/2010 15:29

semantics aside, I think that if a 35 year old woman had sex with my 13 year old son I would call her a paedophile.

Anyway, this thread is baffling and I've had quite enough of weird shitty threads on AIBU for one day thankyouverymuch.

You really should have said "Do not judge me by the men you have had in you sad little lives.

Dione · 07/09/2010 15:57

Oops forgot to close my inverted commas. Sorry.

MmeLindt · 07/09/2010 16:01

Classic MN thread.

LOL at Quattro.

and "you stupid women". Well, that is us told then.

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 07/09/2010 16:07

If we're really wanting to be pedantic and poncey here, we could go right back to the original Greek... in which "paedophile" simply means "one who loves children", with "love" being used in the platonic, non-erotic sense. So being literal about it, I'm a paedophile (or pedophile) because I love my daughter. So arrest me Grin

DSM · 07/09/2010 16:10

So when do you fly out sakapoopoo? I assume you're off to japan and are just checking that you won't be arrested upon your return.

Spelling and grammar indicate intelligence.

Says it all, really.

TheCrackFox · 07/09/2010 16:28

The average age for a girl to have her first period, in the Victorian era, was 16/17 yrs old. Confused

How weird!!

If the average age of menarche was 16 and they got married at 12, should girls nowerdays get married at 8??

TheCrackFox · 07/09/2010 16:33

My personal theory is that girls from a poor background started their periods late (lucky them) because, more often than not, they were undernourished. The rich girls were well fed, and from a historical perspective more likely to be documented, and started their periods far earlier.

I have nothing to back this theory up with, though.

ladyharriet · 07/09/2010 16:46

My theory is that it was only a tiny proportion of girls actually did get married in their early teens, and since in those cases it was more to do with land and alliances, they might not have even lived with their husbands for a while, esp. in the case of two kids being married off to each other. Of course of those that did, there would have been some who were fertile and conceived like Margaret Beaufort. Interesting CrackFox about the richer girls starting puberty earlier - sounds likely. But for vast majority of people, it was v. much like nowadays in that you couldn't marry until you could afford to set up home. Only in industrial times did the average marriage age really fall, because there was no need to wait for an apprenticeship to finish and so on. That's what I remember from college anyway.

narkypuffin · 07/09/2010 16:50

Ladyharriet is right. Marriage for the higher classes was about gaining power and influence for the girl's family.

Wealthy merchants might marry their daughter to impoverished aristocracy to gain social status. Kings married their daughters to forge or cement political alliances. Henry II had three daughters married off at 12, 12 and 14. One of the 12 year olds was married off to secure the border to the Pyrenees.
