...... People don't change their bed sheets for 2-3 months?

I can't believe it. I change all ours weekly, not least because there is nothing quite like getting into a fresh bed.

But 2-3 months without clean sheets? Surely not????

OP posts:

I change the bottom sheet more than the duvet cover, as it needs it more often.

I change dh's pillowcase more often than mine, as he leaes a Turin Shroud mark when he's been working nights (dirty work).

I change ds1's bed more than ds2's, as he covers it in biro when he's drawing in bed. Plus ds2 spends half his time aslepp in our bed anywayHmm

Can I get a prize for the most complex answer?!

lal123 · 05/09/2010 20:29

we only change ours about every 3 weeks or so (hangs head in shame) - I can't actually remember washing bedding when I was a student.......

SilveryMoon · 05/09/2010 20:29

I change all fo our beds on a tuesday. Sometimes ds1's bed has to be done more often.
I hoover the mattresses every week and flip them once a month.

HowsTheSerenity · 05/09/2010 20:33

I noticed that a lot (well most) people in England do not use top sheets. Just a fitted sheet and duvet.
Isn't it annoying to wash yoour duvet cover all the time?
Why not use top sheets?
I am really quite curious (and why do people have carpet in bathrooms).

2rebecca · 05/09/2010 21:27

We just have bottom sheet and duvet cover. I wash them both every couple of weeks, but not necessarily at the same time. Pillow cases usually get washed more frequently.
Top sheets seem a pointless added extra to me. The top of your duvet gets dusty so I'd as soon wash the whole thing.
I don't iron it so it's not that much hassle.

UnePrune · 05/09/2010 21:38

Duvets don't keep you as warm if there is a top sheet as well. I never have a top sheet as it means the duvet won't insulate me. I get very cold. Washing a duvet cover is hardly difficult.

We change our sheets about every 3 weeks and I am not ashamed. I'm not proud neither Grin

UnePrune · 05/09/2010 21:40

It has never occurred to me to hoover the mattress. Shock
We have a goosedown topper that I wash every so often.
What does mattress-hoovering achieve?

darcymum · 05/09/2010 21:42

A friend of mine broke her waters in bed then when off to hospital to have the baby. When she came home three days later first thing she had to do was change the sheets because her DH hadn't changed them, and yes, he had been sleeping in the bed.

Bast · 05/09/2010 21:47

I make let people wear shoes in my home but still change my sheets at least once a week - and hoover the mattress each time ...and wash the duvets and pillows bi-monthly.

herjazz · 05/09/2010 21:51

We called one of our housemates Turin cos his sheets were so orrible and unwashed and you could see an imprint of his body on them

poshwellies · 05/09/2010 21:54

Mattress hoovering gets rid of the dead skin ,hair and dust mites.

I don't do mine often enough Blush

Spacehopper - you hoover mattress every couple of months, or bedding?? Shock

resistanceisfutile · 05/09/2010 22:09

I'm not scared of dust mites Grin

They're harmless n'est pas? Useless your allergic or something?

NoahAndTheWhale · 05/09/2010 22:09

I change the sheets every few weeks or so I think. Not as long as 2-3 months - that is yuck.

You know those people who say they don't smell? Well, they DO, don't they? They have just got used to it and don't notice it on themselves anymore. It's everyone else that does.

It's probably the same for bedsheets....

expatinscotland · 05/09/2010 22:11

I agree! YUK.

VivaLeBeaver · 05/09/2010 22:11

My mum says when she was a student bed sheets at uni were changed termly, this was back in the 60s. Halfway through the term she would turn her sheet the other way round.

Bit like blokes wearing their pants inside out on the 2nd day. Grin

MisSalLaneous · 05/09/2010 22:14

Ah ok. Sorry, I think that's horrid, but hey, I'm sure you can live with that knowledge. Agree that's not the end of the world and all that, but I also do small things like change my underwear every day, have a bath, brush my teeth etc. Doing so won't guarantee world peace, but it does make for a slightly more hygienic environment. And I smell less. Wink
