DH is currently googling berries as he has this idea to steep the berries growing wild outside our back garden.

One looks like rose hip (not sure that it is), the other is a little black, hard berry that the birds seem to love.

I have told him that he is on his own and dd and I will ring the ambulance when he starts being sick Grin.

The black one sounds like sloes so you need to make gin with it - too bitter to eat raw or in crumbles

KurriKurri · 04/09/2010 19:27

Little black ones could be elderberries - you cab make wine with them,(bush has dangly clusters of little white flowers, smells a bit cats peeish.) On the other hand they might be something lethal Grin.

KurriKurri · 04/09/2010 19:28

cab? can

taffetacat · 04/09/2010 19:29

It could be a sloe - fruit of the blackthorn, which is very spiky, but that is blackish purple, matt. He needs to get lots of prick them then stick em in some gin with lots of sugar and leave for a few months, turning the bottle over every week or so.

It could also be elderberry - much smaller and grow in clumps. Can make lots of stuff with elderberries.

Neither will kill him!

He thinks they're elderberry. Yes to clumps and white flowers. Although, there are no flowers at the moment.

little hard black berries could also be deadly nightshade.

elderberries are more dark red/purple rather than black, and quite squishy.

clumps and white flowers sounds reassuring though.

Tokyotwist · 04/09/2010 21:50

Managed to talk him out of it for now Smile.

Told him it will clash with the rat poison Wafarin, he already takes for his PE.

Honestly Men Hmm

just as further warning, as few as 3 berries off deadly nightshade can KILL a child, and 15 would kill an adult (was in countryside section of our local rag this week!)

UnquietDad · 04/09/2010 21:56

Google-berries? Is he a Noddy fan?

Sorry.

UniS · 04/09/2010 21:58

if he identifies the tree he will identify the berries...
elder tree looks quite different to deadly nightshade plant.

Don't think they are deadly nightshade as I seem to remember white flowers.

But now I'm interested in finding out myself what they are.

I'll get a leaf tomorrow and try and match it on google.
