to think that 90% of threads on mumsnet could be avoided by 'googling' but then the site wouldn't exist, so AIBU to be pissed off when posters do that 'let me google that for you' thing?!

Conception, style and beauty, DIY, pregnancy... most of the questions we have we could find the answers on google but mumsnet is more than that isn't it? Its about opinion and NOT trawling through thousands of pages of tat to find what you want.

So I find it really annoying when I start a thread and someone does that3 google thing and types my exact question into the search engine.

Yes I could have done that, yes I know google excists but I joined mumsnet to talk to people not sit 'alone' googling!

Well it depends. If your post is along the lines of "tell me about your experience with ...." then YANBU.

If you post something along the lines of "what's the time difference between UK and NY?" or "what's the exchange rate for the £/Euro?" then YABU.

Half the time when I google my question it directs me to a MN thread anyway

If you google and get 23,000 hits, knowing what is worth reading is a bit difficult.

Forums like this are a great way of people saying "this worked for me" to help people get through google and find something that works.

Also there are some liars out there! They say "I have spent ages googling and connot find xxx" so you try it yourself and go straight to the answer they (allegedly) could not find.

I find it quite helpful in some cases. Mabe one pposter would have thought of a different way of phrasing the google!

Don't agree that most threads could disappear if everyone just used google instead, you can't google relationship problems / silly stories / rants etc.
You can (and should) google 'can i eat xxx when I'm pregnant', 'what day is it today?' (seriously!) etc.

So what day is it today?

I love lmgtfy but I wouldn't dare use it in cold blood so to speak.

It isn't just on here, it's in real life too. I have loads of friends who seem to think that I can magically find things online that they can't.

Sometimes I just say to them, 'you know what you just said to me, type that into google and hit enter' but they still seem convinced that it takes a real expert and that somehow their own google use doesn't count.

YANBU anyway, it's quite funny in a way but I much prefer to ask REAL people (even if you are a bunch of internet randoms!).

but I do agree that something that is straightforward fact should really be googled. but anything like product recommendations etc, MN is much better than google IMO :)
