Sulking about this afternoon

I know iabu but I can't snap out of it!

Been invited to a BBQ later and I don't feel like going, but dh and dc want to go. The BBQ hosts have had so many bbqs throughout the summer, they are lovely people, but it feels like groundhog day.

Dh has been on night shift forever while I try and entertain children quietly on zero budget, this afternoons our first chance for a family afternoon in ages.

For the first time in ages I'll be able to drink but am working tomorrow so can't get drunk like the rest of them.

I need to pull myself together I know. Tell me iabu and kick my arse please!

Go, enjoy yourself with this other nice family doing all the hard work. Make the most of it and r-e-l-a-a-a-x Smile

Sometimes I feel like this, especially when I am tired. However, I try not to drop out and always enjoy myself lots when I get there. You can always use the excuse that you are working tomorrow to leave the BBQ early, if you are feeling really tired.

We're pretty friendless and get invited to about 2 or 3 bbqs a year - probably host 1 or 2 depending on how much DH has been away/our few friends being available.

Although I'd be exhausted by the enforced social interaction, I'd love to be in your situation of clearly being a popular person that people like to have around.

And I'd bask in not having to plan or cook the meal myself.

RiverOfSleep · 30/08/2010 12:25

You are all right, thank you. I am tired and I think that's why I'm being grumpy. I'm going to go and relax!

You shouldn't have accepted the invitation to the BBQ if you don't want to go.

Or, why don't you host the BBQ if you like the 'lovely people' but are bored with going to their house?

Or, if you wanted a family afternoon together - why didn't you decline their invitation and plan something for your family to do?

Sounds as if generous friends are doing their best to include you - possibly because they know you have 'zero budget'?

You asked for your arse to be kicked, so here goes - you sound a miserable friend and an ungrateful guest. Either go to the BBQ and enjoy yourself (and let your hosts enjoy you), or stay home and feel sorry for yourself.

Oh and by the way - you don't have to get drunk to enjoy yourself. Hmm

Bit harsh Earlybird (but fair). I am [jealous] because your weather is obviously good enough to be outside and you have a bank holiday. today has been mainly rainly, occassionally torentially rainy with a few odd sunny spells. Belgium is really soggy.
OP go, and use work as an excuse to leave early if necessary.

Earlybird · 30/08/2010 12:45

Yes, it was harsh.

But whinging rubs me the wrong way. OP actually sounds as if there is quite a nice day ahead of her - if she'll let herself enjoy it.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 30/08/2010 12:50

Yes, that's why I qualified my initial statement with 'but fair'. Right, seeing as you lot are enjoying a sunny day, I'm going to brave the rain and stand under my brolly and have a fag.

ChippingIn · 30/08/2010 12:54

Why not let Dh & DC's go and stay at home, please yourself for the afternoon/evening?

RiverOfSleep · 30/08/2010 13:14

Earlybird (and everyone) you are mostly right, thanks.

I say mostly as it is one of those things where everyone gets drunk and it's then a hard crowd to enjoy yourself with sober!

Not really an option for dh and dc to go without me, anyway I am starting to look forward to it now. Am determined to be a good guest. Must think of something interesting to talk about....
