I don't think anything or anyone deserves to be locked in a wheelie bin, but surely someone who chooses to do it to another innocent creature is more deserving than the innocent creature who has been dumped ragged.

Vallhala · 24/08/2010 11:49

It IS an offence CerealOffender.

The Cruelty to Animals Act came in in 1876, the Protection of Animals Act in 1911 and we now have the Animal Welfare Act of course. The middle of these, for example, could carry a sentence of up to six months imprisonment yet very rarely is it meted out.

loopyloops · 24/08/2010 11:51

Less shocking probably, no less horrible.

The "lady" looked respectable, and as she was older we assume respectability.

It was day time, when people could potentially see.

Alcohol is used as an excuse for all sorts of bad behaviour.

spikeycow · 24/08/2010 11:52

No it wasn't you Val. It was probably that Junglist nutter Wink

Vallhala · 24/08/2010 11:53

Junglist? Never heard of her! Wink Wink Wink

sallyseton · 24/08/2010 12:00

Just going to put something slightly inflammatory out here:

How many of you are vegetarians or vegans? The methods used to slaughter animals are much worse than what happened to this poor little kitten. If you are a meateater eho buys their meat fresh from a farm, humanely slaughtered, you can rest assured that every time you buy a pre-prepared sandwich with meat in it, or have a meat-based meal in a restaurant then the animals you're eating will have had short, horrible lives an have been slaughtered in the most inhumane way possible. Vegetarian? The eggs in those biscuits or merangues you're eating? Battery eggs for sure. New leather sofa? Think about what you're sitting on. And how exactly it got there.

I usually go out of my way to keep my beliefs to myself but when I see the outpouring of rage towards this woman I wish it could be diverted towards those who are causing hideous suffering to animals all over the county RIGHT NOW.

What that woman did is hideous and abhorrant and I'm glad she's been arrested (?) but those of you showing such outrage might want to think about the impact you're having on the lives of thousands of animals every single day.

Psammead · 24/08/2010 12:05

What I often wonder about, Sallyseton with regards to vegans is what exactly would happen to all the farm animals if everyone were to become vegan? I doubt the farmers would look after them out of the goodness of their hearts. Maybe they would be castrated so that they would just die out 'naturally'. Would it be better for farm animals to become extinct than for some to suffer? Genuine question.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 24/08/2010 12:09

Poor cat - it's horrible. But it's definitely not normal behaviour. And I'm not feeling sorry for the woman at all - but it does make you wonder what else she's up to and if she is unwell, she could need help or she may continue to harm others or herself - though, really I'm not an expert.

Maybe she's one of many people who are fed up with cats pooing in her garden, or leaving dead mice on her patio. We know they're out there - you only have to check AIBU...

And I'm not fond of other people's children, either (barring a few) at last someone said it out loud. It's been one of those things you just don't admit to. I feel liberated.

xkaylax · 24/08/2010 12:11

evil woman I really hope somebody does report her Angry

Amberc · 24/08/2010 12:22

I'm sure she's probably found poo in her garden or stepped in it, got angry and done this even though it probably wasn't this specific cat. I dunno - it smells of vengeance to me not mental illness.

sallyseton · 24/08/2010 12:26

You'd have to ask a proper scientist Psammead but as far as I know there would be a massive drop in birth rate, seeing as how right now cows, sows and some chickens are kept constantly pregnant through artifical means.

If the whole world decided to stop eating meat a plan would have to be formed to reintroduce species into the wild in a responsible way, I'm sure a lot of people would have a lot to say if farmers just let their herds wander free.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with eating dairy if the animals are treated well, so perhaps we could have humane dairy farms in every local community

zippy79 · 24/08/2010 12:34

YANBU at all- I think that the best way to teach people who harm defenceless animals is to give them a taste of their own medicine and its a proven fact that many who go on to kill other humans start with harm to animals so this sort of behaviour should be stopped

Vallhala · 24/08/2010 12:39

No animal foodstuffs, leather sofas or shoes here sallyseton. That's been the way for over 30 years now. My teenaged DDs have never touched any of it in their lives either.

I'm an dog rescuer (occasionally other species as and when they come my way) and active animal welfare/rights campaigner. My children and I also get our hands dirty as volunteers for an independent dog rescue as well as fund raise for them and for other animal welfare and rescue organisations. My rescue policy is 100% No-Kill.

So yes, I CAN and DO put my money where my mouth is and I can justify my beliefs. The impact I have upon animals lives across the country and beyond is a very positive one.

sallyseton · 24/08/2010 12:45

Well done valhalla Smile it's good to know there are people out there who agree with me.

Didn't mean to come across as 'attacking' every single poster, just wanted point out the juxtaposition of the meateaters here showing such outrage over the mistreatment of animals.

Psammead · 24/08/2010 12:49

Thanks for your reply, sallyseton :)

loopyloops · 24/08/2010 12:52

I eat meat. I was vegetarian for years (from age 7), but now I, and my family, eat meat from local sources where I know the animals have been treated well. It does cost more but is worth it.

The thought of a leather sofa makes me want to vomit.

Anniegetyourgun · 24/08/2010 13:03

To revert to the original question, I don't think it's unreasonable at all to want to shut the evil etc. But it would be unreasonable to actually do it.

Just as her presumed dislike of cats is something she has every right to, but doing something about it, as she did, is not.

nelix2000 · 24/08/2010 13:25

Why is it correct to advocate violence with violence?

A person cannot claim compassion on belhalf of one living creature(the cat) to deny it to the other(the woman).

If the woman does have a mental illness, she deserves compassion, if she doesn't she still deserves compassion. As does the cat.

The definition of compassion is: wanting others to be free from suffering.

Quite frankly I am appalled by those who claim she deserves a physical punishment for her behaviour without even knowing the root of her"logic" for her actions. So many have damned this woman knowing nothing of her. If you say that does not matter, it makes you just as "bad" as she is.

Thankfully the world does not work that way(in law at least) and those who operate in this manner I find odd. If hurting a cat is the first step to a deviant life, what is the next step after hurting a human?

CatAndFiddle · 24/08/2010 13:52

When I was younger, bad news stories really affected me. I told my parents that I hated people and that I preferred the company of animals, and that I wanted to go away and live with them in the Hebrides when I was grown up. (I'm well-rounded now, honest).

This sort of story always sets me back a little bit. But I think it is important to remember that, on the whole, the majority of people are kind and decent to their fellow creatures.

I think the reponse to this sort of action should not be a violent one. Ths woman should be shunned, be made to feel ashamed, so that she understands that this behaviour will not be tolerated in our society. Unless of course she is, in fact, mentally ill.

MistyMooBags · 25/08/2010 13:22

Echoing my thoughts exactly, CatAndFiddle.

Ishouldprobablywax · 25/08/2010 13:43

Hello, no I don't reaaaally want her to be stuck in a bin, it was just an angry reaction to something terrible. It's the same like saying that if anyone hurt my child I'd rip their f-ing throat out. If course I wouldn't really.

Re- the mental health issue argument. I have a great deal of experience in mental health, but I dislike the attitude that punishment isn't the correct option. Surely everyone in the prison system has mental health problems?
This doesn't mean that punishment shouldn't be enforced by way if fine, time or probation.

I truly hope she is charged for this. My belief is that she did it so smoothly and with such fluidity that she had had some 'practise' doing this sort of thing, and I very much doubt that this is the first animal this woman has terrorised.

OP posts:
Jux · 25/08/2010 19:58

Well now she's saying it was a moment of misjudgement etc etc. Her own mum is calling for clemency because she (wheelie-bin woman) is upset because her dad's in hospital.

May I just make the point that my dd, at 10 years old, during the time that her grandmother was dieing, had died, then her uncle died unexpectedly and suddenly, and all that that involved (and still involves) has never been tempted to put any thing at all in a bin (Grin), let alone a living creature.

I think this woman is just reacting to the fact that she was caught in the act of deliberate cruelty and is only regretting that, not the act itself.

rainrainrainsun · 25/08/2010 21:01

Aww Shes Sorry Sad
Sorry she got caught more like !
