If you will permit this "freakola" to reiterate her point, as you don't seem to have understood it Cereal...

Is it OK to do this to a cat but not to a child simply because you prefer children? I prefer children too, especially my own. Point is, just because children are of our own species, why is an outraged reaction warranted when the victim is a child not a cat? I wasn't saying that you should prefer cats.
Would you object to these reactions if it were a child?

Maybe I am a "freakola", I don't know, or maybe I'm just not a callous, narrow-minded and blinkered fool who can only care for those creatures belonging to the same species as me.

On that note, no wonder there are so many racist eejits in this world, if apparently intelligent people think it is acceptable to only care for creatures that look like them...

Psammead · 24/08/2010 11:09

Poor cat. Hopefully it will forget its experience. Seems like such a friendly little thing, too.

Agree with those who say the woman must have some kind of metal disorder. This is simply not a 'normal' thing to do. Maybe this will mean she gets the help she needs.

Sorry, but I also prefer my children to my pets. If my house was in fire and I had to choose who to rescue, it would be my child every time. In fact, any child over my cat. That's not to say I don't adore my cat and look after him but a child's life is more valuable to me.

CerealOffender · 24/08/2010 11:10

where do i say it is ok to stuff cats into bins? i just think it is ridiculous compare cats and children.

CerealOffender · 24/08/2010 11:11

sorry about the freakola comment.

What Val and Loopy are saying. Only a cat my arse. Animals are innocent and defenceless and I wouldn't leave my child with anyone who diminishes what that woman did. On account of the fact that obviously anyone who doesn't see it as a big thing has a cold heart.

loopyloops · 24/08/2010 11:14

Durrrr........

As I tried to make clearer to you above, I am not comparing a child to a cat, I am trying to compared people's reactions with regards to children and cats.

Is it acceptable to have such strong reactions when the victim is a child not a cat? How about a monkey? A chimp? Bonobo? Is there a gradient of how much we care for different creatures, and therefore the level of outrage expressable?

loopyloops · 24/08/2010 11:15

And thanks for the apology.

spikeycow · 24/08/2010 11:17

And cases like this don't always cause widespread anger. What about that cockhead caught on CCTV booting his puppy around the place while his mates watched? Are those specimens worth more than that poor dog? NO

Loopyloops I wouldn't ever say 'lock the old hag in a wheelie bin' or whatever other punishments have been advocated here - whether it was a child, cat, dog, bonobo or naked mole rat. I think those who react violently to injustice like this are likely to do so in other situations too.

I think it's more a personality-of-the-individual thing than species preference.

spikeycow · 24/08/2010 11:20

Too much to ask for some people obviously.

GiddyPickle, if the rescues I work alongside had anything NEAR the financial and public support and profile that child-related ones seem to, they'd be laughing.

The majority view here willl no doubt at all favour children over animals. Go to, say DogPages and you might find the balance tipped in the favour of dogs or veering that way but still the DogPages members will be in a minority in the world overall. I disagree that animal related cases spark more public outrage than child-related ones. (Though perhaps AR supporters are more gobbby louder!).

Rest assured, as one who prefers the company of her dogs to other people's children. I am in the minority.

And please, don't let me get started on the RS-fucking-PCA!

Psammead, I'm one of those who would react as strongly to other situations.

Situations such as dealing with the owners who dumped a dog into a pound to die having burned his face with cigarettes or flung him out on the streets because he was old and nearly blind, the previous owner of my dog who kicked shit out him for 2 years before he was saved by AR people... I have YEARS of experience of this and yes, I'd kick shit out of every one of them.

Katyathegringa · 24/08/2010 11:26

woman has been identified

spikeycow · 24/08/2010 11:26

But it's the lack of care for animals that breeds the extreme reactions though. Look at the threads on here with people saying they'd never give to an animal charity, would let their pets burn in a fire, it was out of order for a teacher to "rescue" a tortoise during a school fire drill etc. IMO extreme animal rights advocates are needed to counteract the apathy. Go Val

loopyloops · 24/08/2010 11:26

Psammead - do you think they actually would do any of those things? (with the possible exception of Val! Grin )

I think these are just instant and primeval reactions to a particularly nasty crime, just the same as people express after a child-related crime has been committed.

My point about the children was that if this thread (or any of the others on the same subject) had a child as the victim, less people would be shocked by the responses. Those responses are probably quite natural in either situation, but I am wondering why, as they would probably not be acted upon, people are offended by the animal-related outrage in particular.

It seems that when the victim is an animal, people find it easier to offer the perpetrator the benefit of the doubt and sympathy. I find this odd, as the crime is the same in both cases.

Psammead · 24/08/2010 11:26

This thread is quite bizarre. Some say that child abuse would get more of a reaction, some say that animal abuse gets more.

I think what makes it shocking is that we actually saw it. If there was a video of someone playing nicely with a child and then randomly throwing said child into a small room and walking away, I think we would be just as shocked, GiddyPickle. There are cases where things like that happen, just as there are cases of much more horrific animal abuse than this, but when we actually see it with our own eyes it's worse (or more real), somehow.

loopyloops · 24/08/2010 11:32

Yes, also the fact that the identification became a bit of a detective story, made people more engaged.

Psammead · 24/08/2010 11:32

loopyloops I would hope not - I think you are right - most reactions are all talk - a way of expressing 'that's really, really not fair' i strong terms.

I think your point is interesting in that more people would advocate a violent response to child abuse than animal abuse. I think more people would actually go through with the violence too, if a child were involved.

loopyloops · 24/08/2010 11:33

Phew! Someone understood my point! Thanks Psammead!

spikeycow · 24/08/2010 11:38

There was a greasy cat torturer with a combover who was attacked outside court. Not a proper booting like he deserved but better than nothing. So maybe some people are willing to put their money where their mouth is.

CerealOffender · 24/08/2010 11:42

she hasn't been arrested, i am surprised it isn't an offense, tbh

Vallhala · 24/08/2010 11:44

"There was a greasy cat torturer with a combover who was attacked outside court. Not a proper booting like he deserved but better than nothing. So maybe some people are willing to put their money where their mouth is."

And it wasn't me, before you all start pointing the finger! :o :o

Psammead · 24/08/2010 11:47

Things I found interesting from the article linked above:

'They thought Lola must have been dumped in the bin by drunken yobs.

But when they looked through their CCTV footage, they were shocked to discover it was a middle-aged woman.'

"I'm surprised at it being a lady I expected it was someone drunk coming back from the pub, but when I saw that, it's mad," said Mr Mann.'

Less horrible and shocking, had it been drunken yobs?
