... or are there a lot of unpleasant threads about SEN in this section recently?

The one about ADHD not existing; the one about people with Asperger's getting lighter prison sentences; and more!
As the mother of a DS with autism, I am used to the hostility and the 'surely he's just being naughty' stuff, but this IS getting tedious.
Can we have more stuff about the elections, immigration, people on welfare, mothers not breastfeeding, mothers going to work, mothers NOT going to work - some different incendiary stuff please?
Or was there a massive anti-SEN backlash in the 'normal' world of parenting while I wasn't looking?

oh, we are no strangers to verbal stims, troublewithtalk Grin

dd1 has had many, many, over the years (and she's only 6 now!)

she has different ones for different situations - at breakfast, when I go to top up her cereal, she says "it's not broken" (again, not sure why)

we have just exited a phase of ehr having to take socks and shoes off if we stopped walking for more than a nano-second. that was fun Grin

the spitting/spit rubbing I oculd live without, though (I know, i shouldn't be bothered, but it's a relatively new stim, and I am)

SC13 I understand that you're upset about the SN bashing on here, as am I, but why do you then advocate bashing other people such as benefit claimants and immigrants? Are you more than happy to bash those people and only get upset when somethings affecting you? I don't have a relative with SN, am not an immigrant or claim benefits etc but I don't want to see any of those groups get bashed.

Nevertheless AIBU is not for sensitive people and some people may hold opinions that you don't like. I like AIBU because if someone says something which I feel is idiotic, I have the opportunity to tell them why they are being a dick and can hopefully change their mind in some way. An example of this is a thread about ADD being made-up and Riven made the OP look like an idiot by firing some scientific facts at him/her. Hopefully she would have changed the minds of many ADD deniers so I think AIBU serves a purpose in that respect.

Theres a difference between AIBU and disablism and there have been a lot of posts which are disabilist lately.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 23/08/2010 18:00

capricorn - she was being tongue-in-cheek. Making reference to the many controversial topics that come up time and again on AIBU. she's not advocating bashing anyone really

Alouiseg · 23/08/2010 18:04

Aibu is always like this in the school holidays when the moon is about to be full!!! Don't know why but that's when the freaks come out to play (is that offensive to anyone?).

deaddei · 23/08/2010 18:05

Ah yes, the new school term postings are always fun.
(forms an orderly queue to wait for them)

FlyingInTheCLouds · 23/08/2010 18:09

I agree it has got out of hand and can be really upsetting.

that said it has the benefit of demonstrating the ignorance of some people and can lead to discussions that can be enlightening. (stimming for example on this thread, though I knew that actions didn't know the word)

also it allows those sometimes abhorent views to be challenged by people that know what they are talking about.

seeing that people often get these views from the media it is good to have them redressed.

yanbu
there is a lot of jealousy about on mn.
I do not understand why threads like th adhad one are not deleted.

Heracles · 23/08/2010 18:37

There's always the option of ignoring those threads, I guess... Hmm

But ignored threads sink like a stone.

If a troll starts a thread and no one posts, does it make a sound.......?

Glitterknickaz · 23/08/2010 18:56

heracles... if the thread was blatantly racist and using n or p words would you advocate just ignoring those?

2shoes · 23/08/2010 18:57

i know what you mane riven, even though you know it is a troll or a thick as shit person, it is hard not to say something as people are being hurt.

Heracles · 23/08/2010 18:58

Ah, but that would contravene the rules, wouldn't it? Even so, yeah, life's too short.

Heracles · 23/08/2010 18:59

Oh I'm not saying you SHOULD ignore, by the way, I love a good barney - it's the second best thing about the internet - but there's no point complaining about the existence of said threads if you're going to leap on 'em is what I'm saying, yers?

They are just bloody clueless and have obviously had a bang on the head

2shoes · 23/08/2010 19:07

so why aren't they deleted, IMO disablist posts should be treated the same as racist posts.
instead we get the "oh people have to be educated" crap.

Glitterknickaz · 23/08/2010 19:08

well said, Riven

Glitterknickaz · 23/08/2010 19:08

and also well said 2shoes

Heracles · 23/08/2010 19:09

Well, as I say, it's your choice. Either deal with them or ignore them, but they won't go away if you choose option 1.

Of course, they might not go away if you choose option 2, in fact they probably won't, but hey, what do you want, I'M NOT A BLOODY MAGICIAN. Wink

Heracles · 23/08/2010 19:09

2shoes: because people are entitled to their opinion. The rush to delete/ban is a dangerous path.
