So I work full time running my own business with a partner and 15 staff. I am never sick. Today I woke at 4.30am terrible headache and sore throat headed to bathroom took nurofen back to bed no further sleep. At the usually rising time of 6.30am I still feel awful aching all over and face hurts like hell where cow head butted me yesterday. Took temperature 100.1, felt couldn't go to work running such a temperature.
I dispatched DH to deliever DD to playscheme and phoned in sick. I am sitting here feeling really guilty I know that they are not that busy today and should cope fine.

I think it is because, I have had huge work load this week much bigger than anyone else (two long days on farm without lunch breaks and 5 night on call in last 7).
Still sitting here feeling very guilty even though I can barely stand without the room spinning.
I think I'll just go and beat myself with a stick and then I might feel better. Damn my work ethic won't even allow me to be sick in peace.

You don't need to ask anyone's permission to take a day off sick - I'm susprised you're asking.

chimchar · 20/08/2010 09:16

you sound poorly. use your day for a bit of well needed r&r. hope you're feeling better soon.

BikeRunSki · 20/08/2010 09:17

You did the right thing. I am off work for the third day running (I don't work Tuesday, this is my 4th day "sick") for similar symptoms.

It is your business. They are not that busy. They can cope. Much better you leave them today, get yourself better and no infect them?

Are you a vet? Really don't want to be dealing with other sickness if you are unwell! I keep telling myself that I can;t go back to work until I am properly well because one of the girls I work closely with is 8 months pg.

Lie on the sofa and stick on some mindless telly, FGS. No need to feel guilty.

HumphreyCobbler · 20/08/2010 09:19

you must let it go

you can't possibly go in and infect all your staff

littleshinyone · 20/08/2010 09:21

you are sick.

if you went in today, you could spread it to other workers. you need to recover so that you can give it your full energy when you go back, you'll get better over a 3 day weekend, and be bright as a button on monday, rather than struggling on, not being useful, and still being exhausted.

as you say, its not that busy today.

enjoy wallowing... i think you need it!

tethersend · 20/08/2010 09:23

You can either have a day off sick and relax or have a day off sick and feel guilty.

Nobody is indispensable, you know Wink

harassedinherpants · 20/08/2010 09:24

Don't feel guilty about it in the slightest, but do take the time to rest and recover today and over the weekend.

Hope you feel better soon.

squarehat · 20/08/2010 09:35

Dont feel guilty, if you went into work chances are you would either pass on your illness, pass out or end up making yourself worse and having to have more time off.

Spend your time productively taking it easy and getting yourself better dont spend all day feeling guilty about something you have no control over.

Thank you I knew that MN would put me straight. my darling little girl cat is snuggled up next to me on the sofa.

When ever I feel guilty about taking a day off sick, I remind myself of some of the ridiculous reasons some of my work colleagues have given before to get a day off (Not always sick)...

"The dog has the s**ts",
"I stubbed my toe at the weekend and It's just started hurting now"... this was wednesday morning!
My cat has just had kittens, and I dont like leaving it???
I've got a really bad cold... funny that it coincides with the day before your friends hen night, and you weren't allowed annual leave when you requested it because the office is so short staffed already!

It makes me feel better when I have a day off! And it makes me chuckle when I do their sick leave and anual leave forms!

nearlytoolate · 20/08/2010 10:08

Try to sleep. Then you can't worry about what else you should be doing! you'll also feel better for it and it will convince you that you are 'really' ill.

CatButler · 20/08/2010 12:14

A cow headbutted you?

That has to be the most fabulous reason I have ever heard for calling in sick (and I grew up on a farm :) )

Honestly, nobody would make something like that up plus - you're the Boss and never off so everyone will be going around saying 'blimey, she must be bad, she's never ill'

Quit whipping yourself and go have a laugh at the crud they call daytime tv :)

Hope you feel better soon btw
