to suddenly start worrying about wifi/dect stuff now I live in a tiny terrace house

We live in a tiny new build terrace house. We don't have any wireless stuff because we get by fine without it and I am suspicious of the safety of them as there have been a fair few scary programmes/news articles. The houses either side of ours have recently had new people move in. Both of whom seem to have wirelss, dect phones etc. DC's rooms are so small that we don't get much distance between the neighbours rooms. DD sleeps about two meters away from a wall - that's the only way a bed will fit in there and I know there is a phone point on the other side because all these houses have the same phone points. I know that there is a dect phone a few meters away from her room two because the neighbour invited us in one day.
I stupidly have googled and scared myself. Most of the websites that are anti this stuff are also selling very expensive screening/detection products.
Please tell me I am being stupid to worry about this, that your homes are the same as mine and I should definately not go off and spend money I dont have on screening stuff!!!

It's all woo. Don't worry. you'll be fine

phoenixflower · 19/08/2010 21:41

Stop worrying! It will be fine. Don't waste your money on any of that crap, you and your family will all be fine!!

TrillianAstra · 19/08/2010 21:42

YABU.

No idea what a dect phone is, but wireless stuff doesn't hurt you.

BramblyHedge · 19/08/2010 21:48

Hope not - out router is attached to the back of my bedside table (its where the phone point is).

I live in a terrace and there must be about 7 wireless networks in the vicinity and probably loads of phones - I really don't think it is anything to worry about.

BertieBotts · 19/08/2010 21:51

Thirty years ago, everyone was terrified of microwaves - regnant women were told not to stand in front of them, and everything. Not a single erson has ever been harmed by a microwave (in the way they were worrying about in the 80s anyway) - I'm sure that the wireless etc stuff is just the same :)

sanielle · 19/08/2010 21:52

YANBU to be scared of it. I'm always nervous of anything that hasn't had years of research behind it. But it probably is fine......

BonniePrinceBilly · 19/08/2010 21:56

Crystals will ward off the signals. And some homeopathy.

Nah, I'm kidding. Its all a load of bullshit and the only thing you need to do is stop reading woo nutjobs on the internet. These people are sitting at home with tin-foil hats on.

sanielle · 19/08/2010 22:04

I wouldn't move in to a house that was next to an electricity substation (the only one we could afford to buy in our area). That was probably safe too... but I am a wimp and pregnant so wasn't going to risk it. Wifi doesn't seem as scary for some reason to me. But that might be because I know fuck all about any of it.

RunningOutOfIdeas · 19/08/2010 22:09

Televisions and radios are wireless...

MmeRedWhiteandBlueberry · 19/08/2010 22:10

You need to go and live in the middle of the Sahara, OP, but watch out for the UV rays. Then you will be able to get away from stupid websites and TV programmes.

Glitterknickaz · 19/08/2010 22:58

Make everyone in the house a tin foil hat Wink

Thanks posters, feel loads better now. I have a bit of a health anxiety problem. My DD had major surgery quite a few times as a baby and I now find it hard to get 'perspective'. It's like I want to protect her and DS from anything that could potentially damage their health and put me in a hospital watching them suffer and worrying about loosing them, like I had to with my daughter. But you just can't do that can you? Also, if my DD hadn't been born into this time, she would have had a grim existance and probably died. The procedure that gave her a chance at a normal life was only invented in 1982 - so perhaps I should embrace the modern age a bit more rather than worrying that my children are being microwaved by all the technology!

Hi ilovehugs - I totally understand your anxiety. I once read a scare story about the evils of parabens and threw out all my lovely Clarins and Kiehl's products (and it was after Christmas as well so I had a good stock - sob!).

As someone said here, if you worry about wireless then why not radio or telephones or TV - these wireless scare stories are just a ruse to terrify people and sell pointless products.

This is a blog run by a cancer surgeon who is particularly scathing about mobile phone and wireless scare stories and debunks them and links to all the evidence. He wrote recently about this - I don't know if it's any help as he does get quite dense but it's good as a resource.

Thanks so much for that link TS, incredibly reasuring! What makes people like me, who do worry a bit too much, scared is the fact that I dont have enough knowledge or understanding of the science around these issues.
Poor you with oyr parabens! I also read scary stuff about them and avoided them when pregnant and for the kids. I didn't by any baby products with them in for my DS, but after mt DD had to take medicens with them in every day for over 6 months =, I had no choice but to stop worry about them and no longer scan for them on the ingredients list!

Its just another kind of radio wave, like your TV and your radio.

Lizcat · 20/08/2010 18:12

I have to say you only get away from these if your house is in the middle of no where now. We live in a fairly large detached house with large gardens, but still when I fire up my alp top in addition to my own wireless network I am offered no less than 6 of my neighbour's network.
As Tee said they are just radio waves given a fancy name.
Do you not remember when we all had little sticky shields that we put on our mobile phones to stop our brains being irradiated.
