Also use them for desserts - layer berry compote and Greek yogurt in them, top with toasted flaked almonds and drizzle of honey. Or amaretti biscuits soaked in amaretto and top as above. Mini trifles, tiramisu etc. Make jellies in them. And they stack together neatly in cupboard too!

nannynick · 19/08/2010 20:44

Reminds me of the 80s as my little sister used to love Nutella, so we had loads of the glasses and YES we did use them as children's drinking glasses. No problem at all. Great reason to buy them, rather than the screw top versions.

Raejj · 19/08/2010 20:45

Oh no they're great:)

TheFallenMadonna · 19/08/2010 20:45

My grandma always used them for orange juice at breakfast.

My DC don't like nutella Shock

missedith01 · 19/08/2010 20:45

We have them and use them. Why not? Reduce reuse recycle! YANBU.

poppyknot · 19/08/2010 20:46

OP reminded me of the book A Likely Lad by Gillian Avery. It was about a boy growing up in Salford at the turn of the 19th /20th century. His parents were very proud and aspirational. The mother used to describe neighbours who did not wash their front step every week as being 'proper poverty struck'

PotPourri · 19/08/2010 20:47

that's the point. that and mustard jars. that is soooo the point!

Cathycat · 19/08/2010 20:47

Its fine! I thought I was the only one who'd noticed that they were good for that! My children love them, it doesn't matter if they break as they're free and actually they bounce quite well!

nannynick · 19/08/2010 20:48

They have even done Simpsons versions.

LackingInspiration - they have a plastic clip on lid, so to make it into a drinking glass, the lid and any label on the outside of the glass needs to be removed.

aendr · 19/08/2010 20:58

Oh no, they're perfect. And as I knocked one out of quite a high shelf today and it bounced and came to no harm, I think they're also pretty good for children (and adults) beyond the plastic phase but not totally competent. It's a pity they don't do tall glasses too.

southeastastra · 19/08/2010 21:00

i haven't had nutella since the 70s am going to buy some tomorrow now

mumeeee · 19/08/2010 21:01

YANBU. They are supposed to be used as drinking glasses. I think they were actually advertised as galsses at one point. We use them in this house and nobody here is under 18.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 19/08/2010 21:02

I thought that is what they were for!

sanielle · 19/08/2010 21:03

YANBU and you won't be gutted when one of your children breaks a proper glass. If you were clever you'd just add hot milk to dirty jar and stir. Then you don't even have to wash them first. Laziness and recycling. The holy grail of smugness Grin

ilovehugs · 19/08/2010 21:04

ALL our glasses are Nutella jars.

Booboobedoo · 19/08/2010 21:04

I've always done this.

I think your DH has a keeping-up-with-the-Jones' complex. Wink

DS and I had nutella pancakes for breakfast this morning.

ChippingIn · 19/08/2010 21:05

My friend still has some from the 80's/90's :)

CornishKK · 19/08/2010 21:07

We used them as glasses growing up, thirty years later my Mum still had them in the cupboard and they were part of our family language, i.e. If you don't want a big drink you just have a Nutella glass full.

I have not had Nutella for years, Sainsburys planned for tomorrow you may just have given their Nutella sales a boost.

Oh, and YANBU.

StarExpat · 19/08/2010 21:09

I'm going to buy nutella tomorrow. I am intrigued!!

StealthPolarBear · 19/08/2010 21:14

PMSL at Hecate and her embarrassing nutella jar collection! You need to adapt the ramekin intervention thread for your own purposes!

I haven't had nutellla in ages, forgot you got a free glass, must get some very soon!

nannynick · 19/08/2010 21:16

StarExpat - look for the 200g version. Other versions are in screw top jars. Not all places stock the 200g version - if they don't, moan to the store manager Smile

Goblinchild · 19/08/2010 21:16

I use them, and for storing stuff in the fridge, because they have a handy plastic lid.
So we don't waste a leftover bit of anything, it's ready to be scoffed by an enterprising teen the next day.
DD is taking half a dozen of to uni as well, so the crystal is safe. Grin

FakePlasticTrees · 19/08/2010 21:17

I have 4 - I think I need another 2 to make more of a set.

StarExpat · 19/08/2010 21:22

Ah, thanks Nannynick! I can't wait!! I also love Nutella so this is a fantastic excuse to buy some... it can't be too bad for people, surely? just a whole jar in moderation?

Ninjacat · 19/08/2010 21:25

I have a set of ScoobyDoo nutella glasses from when DS1 was little Smile
