He is fantastic and I am so glad he is able to disscuss the issue of faith schools and bring up the issue of discrimination against non beleavers in school choice.

Did a very good job at not laughing at the sixthform students too.

God yes YABU he is very slimey. Although I do remember sitting in lectures 20 years ago discussing with the person sat next to me whether he was good looking. I remember him turning up in black tie (at 9am) because he'd 'just stepped off the train from London'

milliemoosmum · 18/08/2010 21:36

YABVVU

zerominuszero · 18/08/2010 21:43

A great man but, ahem... how can I put this? Not necessarily all that sexy in my view. Oh well. I suppose we all have a few guilty pleasures (I know someone who fancies Gordon Brown, so....)

GeneralissimoVonBobbington · 18/08/2010 21:44

YABU. He's so bloody smug. Yes we get that you don't believe in God (or gods for that matter) Mr Dawkins but why bother everyone else about it all the time? They're not hurting you are they?

LadyBlaBlah · 18/08/2010 21:44

Has he been on tonight??

sincitylover · 18/08/2010 21:46

nothing sexy about being with someone so rational.

Very bleak world view. My exh shared many of his opinions. Totally depressing imho.

semicolon · 18/08/2010 21:50

DP and I are enjoying his views on faith schools as we share them.

I don't fancy him though.

SenoraPostrophe · 18/08/2010 21:51

eeek, yes yabu

lucysnowe · 18/08/2010 21:51

I'd maybe shag him, but it would have to be angry sex.

littlebabynothing · 18/08/2010 21:52

actually they are hurting me - by making atheists exclude their children from assembly to not expose them to the legal requirement to pray

Among other things tbh

BubbaAndBump · 18/08/2010 21:54

lol at angry sex lucysnowe

very interesting programme, although finding myself getting annoyed at him and at the faith school opinions. shouting at the telly Hmm

Snobear4000 · 18/08/2010 21:55

I don't imagine Spiritmum will agree with you.

I have had a Man-crush on Dawkins ever since The Greatest Show On Earth re-opened my eyes to the "magic" that has been generated, over and over again, by evolution. I was almost jealous of religious people for the spirit-world they were imagining, as my life of scientific certainties and ultimately, death, seemed a little bleak in comparison to all the singing angels, reincarnation and such.

Since reading his book I see magic as strange, startling and awe-inspiring as any story about heaven and hell, whenever I contemplate the shell of a snail, a bee pollinating a flower, or a highly evolved clown fish playing harmlessly in the poison arms of a sea anemone. No creation required!

Crikey I'm almost going misty-eyed. YANBU

Yes snobear. I remember him explaining how amazing every human being is, how lucky each of us is to be alive. How we should value everyone or everything.

semicolon · 18/08/2010 22:04

And.

Booboobedoo · 18/08/2010 22:10

I felt sorry for the girl at the Muslim school who was confidently explaining the Koran's take on scientific truths, and how she and her school-mates believed this to be true.

Dawkins said something like "and you're the one who wants to be a doctor?".

I completely agree with his view-point, though, and you can fancy anyone you like.

cloudydays · 18/08/2010 22:15

Is it possible to be both athiest and holier than thou? I hate his smugness, and his apparent disrespect and disdain for people of faith. In exactly the same way that I hate the smugness of religious fundamentalists, zealots and evangelicals, and the disrepect and disdain that they exhibit toward nonbelievers.

YABVU.

semicolon · 18/08/2010 22:20

I think he is a healthy antidote to holier than thou. He redresses the balance. And he's right.

snoozathon · 18/08/2010 22:23

YANBU.

I didn't know what he'd be like and he is lovely, really gentle although passionate.

The guy in Ireland - was he Catholic? - challenging him over a ridiculous point, RD could have crucified him (if you'll forgive the analogy) but let him speak and listened, and spoke calmly when the guy eventually stopped ranting about how it's parents' human rights to put their children in brainwashing schools.

The most interesting thing was the percentage of faith schools as opposed to the percentage of parents who actually go to church - makes it seem to me that they are propping up a dying fad.

grottielottie · 18/08/2010 22:27

I don't find him smug he is just very calm and reasoned, but can see how it come across. I really wish I could stay as calm and focused when faced with some of the augments he does.

Boo
Was that really a confidential discussion? There was a camera crew there, and I think it's entirely reasonable to question weather someone that doesn't believe that pure and salt water don't mix should be going into a scientific job.

Booboobedoo · 18/08/2010 22:32

I didn't say I thought he was unreasonable.

I felt sorry for her because of the massive wake-up call she's going to get when she's studying for the requisite 'A' Levels.

I thought he moderated his tone well, but it seemed that he couldn't quite resist saying that out loud, and perhaps he should have done.

TheDoodler · 18/08/2010 22:47

He's an arse! I'm an atheist but he has no respect for anyone who doesn't share his view and has made his brand of atheism a fundamentalist religion in itself.

snoozathon · 18/08/2010 22:50

I think he was flirting with ronshar earlier on the webchat Grin

She asked what kind of biscuit he would be eating, quite flippantly as he'd already signed off, and he replied:

"ronshar I am looking for a chocolate suggestive..."

That's kinda sexy, AIBU?!

CheerfulYank · 18/08/2010 23:08

YANBU, I fancy a lot of odd people.

And I don't think he's unreasonable, even though I don't share his beliefs.

2rebecca · 19/08/2010 00:09

I think he has gorgeous twinkly eyes and agree he's very fanciable.
