this morning, ds (nearly 4) tipped out his bucket of crayons, pencils and chalks. When he had finished using them (and putting them under the rug) I asked him to put them away.
Then I asked him again.
A little while later I asked again.
Then I shouted at him to do it.
Then I turned the tv off and said he could have it on again when he had picked the crayons etc up.
An hour later (tv still off) I said I would count to 20 and any left on the floor would go in the bin.
So I counted. Ds leisurely put a few away. At 20, I went and got a carrier bag, at which point ds panicked that I was serious and started frantically putting more away. I put any left on the floor (quite a lot) in the bag and in the bin.
Was I too harsh?

Not harsh....you carried out your threat.

Does you DS normally do as he is asked? If he has a pattern of ignoring you when you ask things of him, then YANBU to put your foot down and follow through on this. If it's out of character for him, then maybe you went a little too far.

no, can i have a slice of your willpower for ds aged 3?

that could have been a clip from my morning

I feel better about it now, thanks. Don't get me wrong, he still has about a gazillion crayons so I won't have stifled his creativity!

He does normally do as he's told in all other aspects of life, just not tidying up.
