i'm married, 2 kids and had a split condom on sun night. called doctors on monday wouldn't see me for the emergency pill. told to ring today and spoke to the nurse who called thro to doctor who apparently shouted at her for interrupting him Shock and he wouldn't see me so have ended up having to pay £27.50 in boots for the emergency pill.

absolutely ashamed, having to pour out my sexual accident to a 20 something pharmacist- MAN- who seemed as embaressed as me!

Please tell me I am not bu!!!!!!

YABU.

annoyeddotcom · 17/08/2010 19:52

why???

OP posts:
juneybean · 17/08/2010 19:54

when I had an accident I had to pay £25.00 for the MAP.

porcamiseria · 17/08/2010 19:55

Id go straight to pharmacy to be honest. Its a huge waste of GP time to see you for something that you can get direct pharmacy help for

think of all the people that are ill and need appts!

annoyeddotcom · 17/08/2010 19:55

i just think it was a little uncalled for really. evidently not

OP posts:
Plumm · 17/08/2010 19:56

I would've gone straight to the pharmacy and paid for it.

FranSanDisco · 17/08/2010 19:57

I don't think Doc was unreasonable to make you pay.

sorrento56 · 17/08/2010 19:58

GPs are busy, this wasn't an illness, you had other options. No reason to be ashamed. People have sex.

agedknees · 17/08/2010 19:58

I think the MAP should cost no more than the normal prescription charge. Think how much more money would be used NHS if the OP did not take it because of the cost and went on to have a termination of pregnancy (not to mention the psychological aspects of a TOP).

Hope you are ok annoyed.

FranSanDisco · 17/08/2010 19:58

Is that what you think the NHS is there for? They already provide contraception for free so if you choose an unreliable method and need the MAP I think you should pay.

bigstripeytiger · 17/08/2010 19:59

I expect the pharmacist was pretty used to it - they must see people frequently who need emergency contraception.

I have never had to use emergency pill, but friends who have have just bought it from a pharmacy.

Does anyone know if a family planning clinic would supply this?

snowmash · 17/08/2010 20:00

Tonight is 48 hours after, not 72 afaics.

scottishmummy · 17/08/2010 20:00

why did you need see gp for non prescription med.its available across counter.he would have just written same prescription and you would have paid anyways

you knew the problem- need emergecy contraception prevent pg

you took action- bought it in chemist

TotalChaos · 17/08/2010 20:01

yanbu. not everyone can afford 27.50. and also they shouldn't have encouraged you to wait a further day, as that was wasting time unnecessarily if the doctor wasn't prepared to see you.

ChasingSquirrels · 17/08/2010 20:01

But, EC is available on prescription - so government policy is presumably that you should be able to get it.
On that basis - everyone should be able to get it as a prescription or no one should.

piratecat · 17/08/2010 20:03

i would have tried to get to see any doctor i could. were there others you could have tried?

In a situation like that it's very stressful, condoms break. It's alot of money for the MAP, and op, you are right to be pissed off if you thought the gp was treating you shabbily.

unfitmother · 17/08/2010 20:04

Why did you need to see a Dr, just to save you some cash?

annoyeddotcom · 17/08/2010 20:04

we did use contraception, unfortunately i can not take the pill due to health reasons. my husband is having the snip but that aside £27.50 for an accident that was a direct fault of us i think is steep. he made me feel like i shouldn't have enquired and that is what i found unreasonable because it added to my embarressment.

i have never had to take it before, nor have i ever taken the nhs for granted. i would have paid prescription charge no quibble for nearly 30 quid is terrible in my opinion.

i am not annoyed i feel ashamed

lifeas3plus1 · 17/08/2010 20:05

I would (and have) gone straight to the pharmacy too. I just would have felt like I was wasting the doctor's time and taking an appoinment from someone who couldn't get their medication over the counter.

On the plus side you can still get Boots Points on the MAP. Grin

piratecat · 17/08/2010 20:05

she wouldn't have had to pay £27 tho. it IS a prescription med, and it IS monitored, ie you can't have them dished out willy nilly, for health reasons and responsibility reasons.

annoyeddotcom · 17/08/2010 20:06

because unfitmother, it is available on prescription so therefore i sort that route first, obviously cash rich people like yourself can just £30 at boots

OP posts:
theteasonme · 17/08/2010 20:06

Hmm...I went to boots after a similar 'incident' and didn't have to pay (not that I asked) I've always wondered if I should have paid! Smile

Realistically, if you don't want to be pg then surely £27 is a price worth paying?

thisisyesterday · 17/08/2010 20:08

hmmm i agree that it shouldn't cost so much.
it would put an awful lot of people off using it, and thus more unwanted pregnancies presumably?

if you can get it over the counter then why could the GP not write a script without seeing her?

I do think that family planning clinics can provide too tho

thirdname · 17/08/2010 20:09

old to ring today and spoke to the nurse who called thro to doctor who apparently shouted at her for interrupting him Shock
