Thinking that dp is crazy or stupid?

hotCheeseBURNS · 14/08/2010 22:25

He doesn't "believe" in evolution.

He's not well educated, having left school before doing his GCSEs, and he doesn't read. But still... I thought that it was only a few mental fundamentalist religious types who believed in creationism? Am I wrong?

I've always thought it was just ignorance (of science in general) on his part but he's disturbingly closed off to the whole concept...

Has this come from his parents?

toddlerama · 14/08/2010 22:28

Actually, the evolution theory has had a number of respected scientists find major flaws in it. He is entitled to doubt the veracity of it.

lal123 · 14/08/2010 22:32

like who toddlerama????

Katey1010 · 14/08/2010 22:35

Get him to read 'The Greatest Show on Earth", by Dawkins. Read it yourself if you need ammo! He also explains how people don't really understand what a scientific THEORY means...

hotCheeseBURNS · 14/08/2010 22:39

From a quick google search, a theory is "a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world; an organized system of accepted knowledge that applies in a variety of circumstances to explain a specific set of phenomena"

People often think that theory means what hypothesis means. Thanks Katey1010!

rationalist · 14/08/2010 22:39

Evolution is a fact. The theory of evolution is the explanation of that fact. Here's a good website to have a look at www.talkorigins.org/

Katey1010 · 14/08/2010 22:40

Excellent definition Cheese! I will be stealing that myself!

hotCheeseBURNS · 14/08/2010 22:42

Corns1lk - yes probably, his parents are religious in a way that I don't understand. Christian, like my family, but they don't agree with church?

OP posts:
ZZZenAgain · 14/08/2010 22:42

what does he believe in then, how does he think mankind came to be?

Firawla · 14/08/2010 22:42

its up to him if he does or doesn't believe in it, how it does harm anyone and yabu it doesn't make him crazy or stupid, many people don't believe it

Katey1010 · 14/08/2010 22:49

It may harm us as a society if people don't 'believe' in gravity or do 'believe' in fairies. We need scientists and funding for them and not end up like the States with this nonsense taught in schools.

paisleyleaf · 14/08/2010 22:49

It sounds like he was maybe brought up by the "fundamentalist religious types" you mention in your OP

hotCheeseBURNS · 14/08/2010 22:52

Thanks for the link rationalist, I've had a quick look and will read more!

ZZZenAgain I think he believes that god created us as we are.

scottishmummy · 14/08/2010 23:05

do you actually like or respect your dh.your post drips with contempt

maybe he isnt sharpest tool in the box,but hell you married him?so what's deal here can you overlook, agree to disagree

do you have dc,how will you address different pov and school teaching evolution

paisleyleaf · 14/08/2010 23:07

The thing is, there are many people who believe god created us. And have a problem with believing in evolution (like Christadelphians etc). I'm surprised at your lack of tolerance ("stupid", "mental", "crazy", "ignorant") towards your own partner.
You already do go along with evolution, yet you seem like your glad of links to back yourself up that it's fact/law whatever as some sort of ammo against your partner.
Unless I've misunderstood, and you were actually starting to doubt Darwins work yourself a bit.

hotCheeseBURNS · 14/08/2010 23:12

I don't think my posts drip with contempt! All I said was that he wasn't well educated, which he would agree with.

I've been overlooking, agreeing to disagree etc. for some time now! But this evening I have had a couple of glasses of wine and a short but tense argument and I've come here to see what other people's viewpoint on the matter is.

OP posts:
BonniePrinceBilly · 14/08/2010 23:12

Ah come on, you have to be a bit bonkers to not believe in evolution. Its like no believing in gravity.

SpringHeeledJack · 14/08/2010 23:15

hardly "dripping with contempt" I thought...

can't you drag him round the National History Museum or some such- without making any comment- and wait for the penny to drop??

scottishmummy · 14/08/2010 23:15

do you like him?whats the long erm plan, can you both accomodate such divergent views.what did you both argue about then

hotCheeseBURNS · 14/08/2010 23:15

Paisleyleaf - the responses I said thank you for were the ones that provided literature.

OP posts:
SpringHeeledJack · 14/08/2010 23:16

oooh mind you though there is that thread title

Grin
scottishmummy · 14/08/2010 23:17

you are contemptuous of your dh in op and thread title.you obviously think he is a bit country

tribpot · 14/08/2010 23:19

I totally do not agree with creationism but my understanding was that evolution was a theory - albeit one that absolutely makes sense (and I will say one I don't personally find at odds with any religion, the idea of a divine plan etc). Evolution is not fact I think?

hotCheeseBURNS · 14/08/2010 23:20

Scottishmummy - of course I like him and love him and respect him! This is hardly a big issue in our lives! When, occasionally, I see closed-minded-ness in him, however, it makes me slightly nervous. And before I get accused of being closed minded, may I point out that I have posted here in AIBU only to get some views outside my own!

OP posts:
hotCheeseBURNS · 14/08/2010 23:22

Come on people, the point of the thread title is to draw you in and get some input! I make them as controversial as I can! Grin
