to think that the word 'salad' should contain more than yellow ice-berg, slices of under-ripe big tomatoes and a few bits of sad cucumber?

And adding a side dish of potato salad and coleslaw and offering sachets of salad cream does not make it OK?

We went out for a meal last night as the house is in chaos atm. I had a chicken and bacon salad. Salad consisted of the foodstuff listed in the title with the addition of some admittedly quite well-cooked tender chicken and tasty bacon. But there was no dressing at all. It tasted of...well ... chicken and bacon with some slightly bitter crunchy green and red stuff underneath. It was not a salad, it was an exercise in chewing. Dull! It was as if they really wanted to make a sandwich but were using green stuff as an alternative to bread.

Why can salads not contain interesting leaves, onion, walnuts, flageolet beans, lovely juicy little tomatoes, delicately flavoured oils and balsamic vinegar? They do when I make them. It's not that hard to do.

Salad is not just an accompaniment to the protein on the plate. It should be a delight to the palate and the eye.

Grrrr.......

And they couldn't even make good chips to go with DS's scampi. That is the sign of a baaaad kitchen IMO.

i went to nandos a couple of weeks back and ordered a side salad. It was a dish of lettuce only - no dressing, no peppers, no cucumber, no toamtoes (as advertised).

I complained to the waitress and she said 'oh we have run out of tomatoes'. I pointed to a friend's burger (which had tomato in it). She said 'oh no we have run out of cherry tomatoes'. I said 'can you not cut up a big tomato and put it in the salad then?'

I sent it back and told her to bring me some chips instead.

Agree with you Orm - sometimes think this country has improved food wise, then something like teh above happens, or you go to a country pub and you literallty get lettuce, cucember and tomato with a bit of mayo.

lol, it wasn't a wetherspoons was it?

If you paid more that a fiver for it I would have been fed up

we like to sing the "quartermaster stores" song when we get shit food, in honour of the time ds2's fish fingers camme out so dark and overcooked they were hollow and crunchier than kettle chips

we were all sitting in dumb shock when ds2's little voice broke into "There was fish, fish, welded to the dish..."

I get disproportionately pissed off about shoite food when eating out tbh. It's so disappointing, it seems really mean to ruin someone's night out by being slovenly in the kitchen

YABU

The word 'salad' should only contain the letters 's' 'a' 'l' 'a' and 'd'.

That is a 1980s salad. Maybe they are a dead trendy retro place?

OrmRenewed · 09/08/2010 13:08

Exactly getorf. There are some pubs round here where you can lovely food - but you have to stick to a few dishes that they seem to do well. Our favourite does the most amazing carvery - good meat, lovely crisp veg, perfect yorkshire - but not much else that is good. And who wants a full roast when it's boiling hot?

This one has been written out of my food map.

I get so upset when food in a restaurant turns out to be shite.

It makes what is supposed to be a nice event into such a let down.

DP is one of those people who hisses at me not to complain, says everything is lovely and leaves a tip.

I like to confront when things are wrong.

You are quite right mrswobble Grin I changed the heading half way through!

It was £8 as well

ROFL at BOF!

Nope, not trendy retro at all. Just inadvertently so!
