to think that people who complain about textspeak are

milliemoosmum · 08/08/2010 01:00

pompous, pedantic, dinosaurs who cannot accept that the English language constantly changes.

And as for people who pretend they don't know what it says when they clearly do....don't get me started.

Anyone who corrects anyone's spelling, punctuation or grammar or complains about textspeak (unless correcting someone who corrects others to point out that they are not perfect) just makes themselves look like a massive arse.

Discuss.

OP

using txtspk means that some on MN will judge you fick and infer LOADS about you and as a massif we don't like it

In addition, what about folks who use screenreaders to access media? There are a few on MN that I know of

have you thought about that?

LibertyGibbet · 08/08/2010 12:41

Using text speak on here is like shouting in a room when everybody else is just talking.

MNers Know Your Audience.

usualsuspect · 08/08/2010 12:43

Text speak is ok for a text message ..if you don't like it don't use it ..no need to get your knickers in a knot really

expatinscotland · 08/08/2010 12:47

Yes, MMM, you are so much better than the rest of the elitist, snobbery world, so much more open-minded and tolerant.

I'm so enlightenend now, reading your posts and flagellating myself over the error of my ways.

Everyone who's not as good as you are definitely needs scolded for not being like-minded.

Hmm
milliemoosmum · 08/08/2010 12:49

Just pointing out the fact that apparently intelligent MNers who find textspeak infantile seem quite happy to swear and bitch like a group of kids in a playground.
I did set the tone for the thread by using the term "massive arse" but then I'm not claiming to be one of the worlds great intellectuals like some on here.
I am middle class and degree educated though and I still think it's bloody rude to call people thick cos they can't spell or use text speak and some people do agree with me even though some of you seem to think you can speak for everyone - "MN doesn't like it!" LOL.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 08/08/2010 12:53

Mea culpa! I forgot, you're also better than people who swear and are 'bullies'. Indeed. Ten more lashes with a cat o' nine tails for everyone who is not as perfect as MMM.

Anything else?

People who don't cyber hug or use the term 'hun', for example? Stone 'em all!

PueriSimilisCanis · 08/08/2010 12:53

I am not saying folk who use txtspk will be called thick, I said that they would be judged thick and inferences about users of txtspk may be made

HTH

Of course that would be ridiculous - much better to carry on thinking people are thick because they don't write like you.

OP posts:
usualsuspect · 08/08/2010 12:54

some of MN don't give a toss

milliemoosmum · 08/08/2010 12:57

Great comeback btw expat. I am up myself for pointing out that people are up themselves. Well I'll take that - people who are up themselves deserve it pointing out to them a lot more than people who can't spell.

OP posts:
unfitmother · 08/08/2010 12:58

So, if one is middle class and has a degree one can swear and use infantile terminology and that's ok but if others who have not declared their class or educational status do it then they're like kids in a playground? Hmm

expatinscotland · 08/08/2010 12:59

Of course, MMM, especially because some of us have not labelled anyone thick.

Do carry on demonstrating how terrific you are, being so open-minded, decrying bullies, not using swear words.

For those of you who can't really decipher it, or are so old you're getting lazy, get with the programme! You're such dinosaurs in desperate need of a one-way ticket to Switzerland.

LittleMissHissyFit · 08/08/2010 13:00

Ladies, ladies... handbags down please..

Haven't you got Sunday Lunch to serve...?? Hmm

'I am up myself for pointing out that people are up themselves. Well I'll take that - people who are up themselves deserve it pointing out to them a lot more than people who can't spell. '

Pot.kettle.black.

Grow up. It's a big net forum.

It makes some peoples' eyes glaze over. It takes them much effort to try to understand it and some can't make out what's trying to be communicated.

That doesn't make a person up herself for just skipping the posts, or saying they don't get it.

It doesn't make her up herself is she writes she finds people who use this mode of communication thick.

It's an opinion.

B.F.D.

milliemoosmum · 08/08/2010 13:05

And it's my opinion that people who feel that way are massive arses.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 08/08/2010 13:08

Hope you are feeling better expressing that. Have a nice day.

PueriSimilisCanis · 08/08/2010 13:10

you haven't addressed the issue of folk who have vision impairments

milliemoosmum · 08/08/2010 13:11

Unfitmother. As I am not saying that people are infantile for how they type yes I feel as though I am less hypocritical when behaving childishly myself than people who take the moral highground about textspeak but act childishly on here in many other ways.
You may not have disclosed your educational/social background but many on here have and have suggested that textspeak is only used by thick people. I was just pointing out that I am not thick and I also sometimes use textspeak so the assumption that all people who use it are thick is bollocks. HTH

OP posts:
daftpunk · 08/08/2010 13:14

People who use txt spk are perceived as thick. I'm not saying you are thick.

milliemoosmum · 08/08/2010 13:14

PSC I haven't addressed it because no-one on here who is whinging about it to my knowledge actually has a visual impairment. I would not have a problem if someone visually impaired asked someone to clarify what they said because they genuinely couldn't read it. Just the people, who seem to be the only ones complaining about textspeak, who have a problem with it because they assume the poster is less intelligent than them.

OP posts:
milliemoosmum · 08/08/2010 13:16

I'm quite aware that they are perceived as thick - I just don't think they should be.

OP posts:
PueriSimilisCanis · 08/08/2010 13:18

so even though I have told you that there are folk using screen readers to access MN you are not prepared to modify your thinking or your use of txtspk until a person with visual impairment arrives and asks you to?

you're nice

HecateQueenOfWitches · 08/08/2010 13:19

"English evolves - words are spelt differently and have different meanings than they used to because people have misused them and wrong becomes right. You will all have to accept it eventually!!!! "

I certainly accept the natural evolution of language.

I do not accept that a type of shorthand that was created to save money is in any way a natural evolution of language. I will not accept it as such.

LetThereBeRock · 08/08/2010 13:20

YABU.

The use of text speak is lazy, annoying and makes posts difficult to comprehend.
It has its place when one is texting or using Twitter as the number of characters one can use is limited to a relatively low number, but it has no place on public forums.

MrsC2010 · 08/08/2010 13:22

Many people on here have said that they don't necessarily perceive the user as thick, don't agree with correcting other people's spelling etc...but equally don't like text speak's use as a written medium in this kind of forum as it is unnecessary and cumbersome. Or are you only picking up on the more contraversial (and tongue in cheek) points of view that you feel prove something about those who disagree with you?
