to think that people who complain about textspeak are

pompous, pedantic, dinosaurs who cannot accept that the English language constantly changes.

And as for people who pretend they don't know what it says when they clearly do....don't get me started.

Anyone who corrects anyone's spelling, punctuation or grammar or complains about textspeak (unless correcting someone who corrects others to point out that they are not perfect) just makes themselves look like a massive arse.

Discuss.

I would never pull anyone up on their spelling or punctuation errors, (dispite my spelling being terrible, I often notice mistakes in other posts...but I take the view that the poster could be dyslexic, partially sighted, English not their first language, breastfeeding while posting, etc) so it's a little insensitive to point these errors out imo.

However, text spk is a different matter. It's a blatant disregard for the English language and is a step back. I hate it when I see signs spelt incorrectly ie; "nite" that really annoys me, because it's just so "common"...I can't explain it any better than that.

I can't stop you using txt spk on Mumsnet, it's not something you can be banned for (and I'd know if it was) ....but have some respect for your fellow posters. The vast majority of people on MN are highly intelligent and don't like it.

So when in Rome and all that ..

hahahahahahahahahaha

Agree with Nooka and proudnsad (way back on page 1).

I believe I judge people who appear not to be able to do anything other than txtspk.

Flighttattendant · 08/08/2010 11:30

Text speak carries an air of flippancy therefore is only really suitable in certain contexts.

I recently found some hideous examples from an ex on an old Nokia I had kept.

It's really yuck. It sums up his attitude to the entire relationship. Flippant, afraid of giving any love, only in it for one thing.

Contrasted with my lovely DP who has proper handwriting and everything Smile...I dunno. It's just symptomatic of what is underneath the words.

TheLadyEvenstar · 08/08/2010 11:32

I detest seeing my statuses on Facebook like this...

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WNT PST GATWK ON MII WAY HME FRM BRITN 2DAY N IS MEGA XCITED 4 TRKY WOOP WOOP

and thats from my 20yr old cousin

QueuePosition3 · 08/08/2010 11:32

milliemoomoosmum

ur a nob

Rollmops · 08/08/2010 11:32

Habibu, if I started to count things that irritate me, the list would be endless.
This thread is not about overuse of ! ? $ or even Hmm. Do try and stick to the topic.

milliemoosmum · 08/08/2010 11:36

I agree with that.
Something like "I'm sorry 2 hr yr mum az died" would be entirely inappropriate.
As for people who say textspeak isn't necessary now with predictive text on phones. By the time I've been back and corrected all the wrongly predicted words in my text messages it is far quicker to use textspeak. Also you are in danger of getting a far more offensive message than one with a few u's, 2's and 4's in if I leave it unchecked.

MMM;

If you were serious you'd be typing in txt spk, but you're not..so maybe you're just full of it..?

QueuePosition3 · 08/08/2010 11:38

and farking annoying
we dont liek it
move on

milliemoosmum · 08/08/2010 11:39

QueuePosition3 - I take it you hate the infantile use of textspeak yet are absolutely fine with calling strangers a nob on the internet.......

OP posts:
milliemoosmum · 08/08/2010 11:42

When typing 2 handed I don't find textspeak any quicker. I don't actually use it a lot I just object to people on here who jump on others that do and call them thick etc.

unfitmother · 08/08/2010 11:44

I fucking hate textspeak, agree with Nooka, as for milliemoosmum's point that it's great for getting OH to get a pint of milk, I agree entirely, that's what it is for, brief messages that purely impart information.
MN is often about intelligent debate, textspeak has no part in that.
milliemoosmum YABU and a knob! (srry knb) Grin

daftpunk · 08/08/2010 11:44

Leave QP3 alone..she's a dyslexic, partially sighted, English not first language person...

She probably didn't mean to type nob....I'm sure she meant something else...

milliemoosmum · 08/08/2010 11:46

I see....intelligent debate. OK I will debate with you at your highly intelligent level - I also think that you are a knob.

OP posts:
daftpunk · 08/08/2010 11:50

Are you talking to me..?

milliemoosmum · 08/08/2010 11:51

milliemoosmum · 08/08/2010 12:00

Queue you're obviously far to intelligent for me because I have no idea what you're saying. Either that or you're 5 years old in which case get off your mums laptop.

OP posts:
QueuePosition3 · 08/08/2010 12:01

lol.
good try!

QueuePosition3 · 08/08/2010 12:02

hyave you ever SEEN the mumsnet user demographics?
they are educated women
not some ropey 21 year old with 20 kids who left school at 12.
we dont use text speak
its naff

BalloonSlayer · 08/08/2010 12:16

"I take the view that the poster could be dyslexic, partially sighted, English not their first language, breastfeeding while posting, etc) so it's a little insensitive to point these errors out imo."

Chortle at Daftpunk. But you'd repatriate someone for whom English isn't the first language quite happily.

daftpunk · 08/08/2010 12:30

Er...?

Why bring that up? this is a lighthearted thread about txt spk, no one is taking it seriously, it's just a bit of harmless fun, and you want to bring up politics?

Have you got nothing better to focus on.?

unfitmother · 08/08/2010 12:35

OP I think you set the level of the intelligence of the debate when you said right at the statrt that whoever disagreed with you was a "massive arse". Hmm

MrFibble · 08/08/2010 12:35

Actually I quite like being likened to a dinosaur. They dominated the Earth for 165 million years which is far longer than we will be around IMHO.

I am proud to be a pedant.

As for pompous, I can live with that too!
