According to my mother it makes me look like an old lady who's give up on life too soon.

My mother drives a car. She moans when she has to drag a bag of food from the drive to the kitchen. I do not drive, have a 4 year old DD running about and I'm sick of heavy bags digging into my hands pulling off my arms splitting at random moments and needing to be gathered up again everytime I use the cash point or wait at the bus stop.

AIBU to tell her to mind her own business or am I really turning into an old lady?

oh god I have to laugh at all those who have one.

Because I use a mobility scooter and feel like a granny using that and get laughed at every time I use it (yeah, thanks for that, I use it out of choice, not Hmm) so it is very cathartic to have a little chuckle at this. A kind, slightly envious chuckle, mind you. They are rather good.

shoshe · 07/08/2010 20:39

Martha I am in North Dorset! Will look out for you, and just grin and wave Grin

Plumm · 07/08/2010 20:44

I've wanted one since DD stopped using her buggy - I'm fed up of carrying bags all the time, now I've had the bags in buggy experience.

If they're enough for the Parisiens, then they're good enough for me!

pixierara · 07/08/2010 20:49

I have one Grin a lot of people comment about being old before my time etc etc

We are "early adopters" I tell you....

5 years time EVERYONE will have one guaranteed!!!

zazen · 07/08/2010 20:49

I also have one - i used to uproot DD from her buggy and bring the shopping home in that, but now she's 6 my trolley saves my arms.

I have also popped DD into it if she wants a ride.

I get about 6 full shopping bags into it without it being too heavy to pull. I leave the bags in it and reuse.

It's very green!

Jux · 07/08/2010 20:53

I use one like the one my mum had when I was a child. It is a big wicker basket with a handle. I used to use her's but it fell apart once it reached about 40 yo, so we got another from e-bay. Very hard to get these days.Sad

emmanana · 07/08/2010 21:08

Too young to use a trolley?? Sorry, I don't remember reading that rule in the 'life handbook' :-)
I'm 41, and I'd rather have people take the mickey (not that they ever have, publicly!) than be plagued by arthritis in later life, having strained my shoulder joints/lower back by carrying 10lb bags of spuds, and bottles back from the supermarket.
Go for it, I say!! Christmas shopping, they come in to their own. All that nonsense of putting down your millions of bags, then picking them up again everytime you want to look at a potential present!

Try this website - really trendy trolleys, and no cost at all really when you consider it will have paid for itself after avoiding 4-5 taxi journeys!
Be off your trolley and be proud!!!!

pacinofan · 07/08/2010 22:07

I don't have one, but when I suffered a slipped disc in my back I started using dd2's (empty) maclaren buggy for my shopping. I get loads of odd looks and comments 'where's the baby?' but couldn't care less, if it stops me carrying heavy stuff who cares?

Considering progessing to a proper trolley soon!

You have convinced me - I am getting one too ! (a trendy one of course...) Grin Really missing the buggy now that DD is 4 !!

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/08/2010 22:44

My Trolley is pink and choc brown and cream circles lol I am far from embarrassed to use it, it makes life so easy when shopping!

TheFirstLady · 07/08/2010 22:48

I have a fold-up one from Habitat. Not as sturdy as a frame trolley but the wheels snap down flat so you can carry it like a bag until you need to use it. My children pretend they're not with me when I use it though.

MmeLindt · 07/08/2010 22:58

Here in Geneva (or I suppose in any city where traffic is an absolute nightmare and parking spaces are scarce) they are so popular. We have farmer's markets in different parts of the city or the surrounding villages and lots of people have them for that.

I do feel a tad self-conscious, particularly when I have my fluffy white dog with me :o

LadyCad · 07/08/2010 23:02

My Mum uses one of these.

It's made near to where she lives and so ticks all of the "green" boxes, and it looks fab.

Islandlady · 08/08/2010 00:53

I can attest to how popular and trendy they are.

I have a red one with cows on it and it always gets comments from the young girls asking me where I bought it from

However the funniest thing was when I used it to take some stuff to the charity shop where I volunteer, I had it out the back where I was doing some steaming, this woman
peers round the door spots my trolley and wants to buy it, when I said its mine and not for sale she started having a go at me
saying its not fair all you volunteers get the pick of the donations .

She just would not believe it wasnt a donation stormed out telling all the other shoppers 'dont bother all the good stuff goes to the staff'

I couls have told her where I bought it if she had given me the chance.

oldraver · 08/08/2010 01:18

They are very popular in Spain even with young men. They also use them for carting all the gear off the beach

ChippingIn · 08/08/2010 01:30

If so many of you young people have them, how come I've never seen anyone without a blue rinse with one?? Where are you all hiding?? I wish they would hurry up and become acceptable for younger people too where I live!!

Lidl have one in this style this in their flyer for next week, for just £3.99 if anyone wants to try one to see how they get on.

I am soooo tempted....

emmanana · 08/08/2010 14:03

It's bizzarre, but only when you start using one, do you notice how many other people have one! I'm seriously considering upgrading to a cowprint one with cooler bag built in!
If I take my laptop over to my Mum's, Its the perfect way to transport 3-4lb of kit, and saves my shoulder! I carry it in a laptop sleeve so it's well protected. (and doesn't look like you're carrying something expensive)
My SIL birthday, we bought a plain blue one, got some sheets of white and yellow felt (hobbycraft, markets etc), cut into simple white petals, cut circles of yellow, and her DC's stuck them on with strong glue (with adult help of course) in 'Daisy ' shapes. She gets comments every time she uses it! She treasures it!

pranma · 08/08/2010 14:25

I have one-but I suppose I am an old lady :)
It is especially useful for going to the library.I bought it in the market and it is a tasteful shade of Hunter wellie green.I did fancy Black Watch tartan but resisted :)

bronze · 08/08/2010 14:38

whoever it was who was saying about carrying all their kids school paraphanelia
I have a wooden wagon I use. I can also pile in any whingeing child if necessary

serenity · 08/08/2010 14:38

I bought a tasteful black one from IKEA after we stopped using a buggy with DD (so 4 years ago?) There's loads of people of all ages who use them where I live (South London) It's fantastic for transporting books to and from the library (five people with 5/6 books each is heavy)

bronze · 08/08/2010 14:40

here only downside is I can't take it into a shop with me but it is useful for other stuff as you can see

Ilythia · 08/08/2010 14:41

I have a lovely big flower print one. My mum bought it for me!
It's not only great for aldi shops (which is about half a mile that way) but I use it on the beach as well as I can fit the cool bag, change of clothes, buckets/spades and other stuff to do in it!

MrsSchadenfreude · 08/08/2010 14:48

They are essential in Paris. When I bought mine, the young man cautioned me that it would not hold more than 12 bottles of wine at one time. Grin I do balance the salad stuff gently on the top, and carry the baguettes, and it seems to be holding up so far.
