According to my mother it makes me look like an old lady who's give up on life too soon.

My mother drives a car. She moans when she has to drag a bag of food from the drive to the kitchen. I do not drive, have a 4 year old DD running about and I'm sick of heavy bags digging into my hands pulling off my arms splitting at random moments and needing to be gathered up again everytime I use the cash point or wait at the bus stop.

AIBU to tell her to mind her own business or am I really turning into an old lady?

So sorry, but I've been giggling the whole way through this. My mother had one when we were kids (so in her 40s) but strangely has ditched it in favour of Tesco bags for life Hmm. I drive, so it's not a major issue for me, but I would have one if it was convienient for me. So tell your mum she's nuts and drag yours along proudly!

FYI they serve as emergency child transport as well. On a day trip with my friend, her DD got very tired. We shared the carrying duties for about a half hour, but the little chunker could not be dragged around by two relatively small women for much longer than that. So we went into a charity shop, saw a trolley, bought it, and popped the child in it. She thought it was great and it saved our arms for the rest of the day. The child took the trolley home, drew a face on it, and called it Matilda....but that's another story entirely....Grin.

Blimey I thought retailers were only legally allowed to sell them to people over 65 with proof of identity.

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/08/2010 19:24

I have one as well i love it!!!
is great for shopping and on days out i pack it with food and drinks.

shoshe · 07/08/2010 19:26

I have this one Tis brilliant, especially as a CM, with loads of things to carry with the kids!, I fill it with fruit from the Farmers market, instead of buying at the supermarket.

MamaVoo · 07/08/2010 19:36

You cows, you've made me want a granny trolley Grin They have some very trendy ones in a shop near me. I'd still feel a bit self conscious though.

Actually, my mum had one when we were kids and my brother and I used to fight over who would pull it home from the shops.

pigletmania · 07/08/2010 19:41

I have a funky pink flowery one and love it, wish I had one sooner YANBU, only non-car drivers will understand. Its fantastic no more carrier bags digging into my hands and arms falling off and back hurting.

shoshe · 07/08/2010 19:45

Piglet, I drive, but still take my trolley everywhere with me.

shoshe · 07/08/2010 19:46

  • Disclaimer.

I am a Granny Grin

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 07/08/2010 19:48

I'm getting one when the buggy gets ditched! With four children, I need to not have to carry all the paraphernalia I often need.

And it only looks like it's only for old people because that's who primarily have used them up until now. It's becoming more and more fashionable for younger people to use them, so soon it will be normal Smile

pigletmania · 07/08/2010 19:48

flisspapa Hmm fuck truck, please explain. I have one like that one Shoshe

pigletmania · 07/08/2010 19:54

just looked in my cupboard shose I do have exactly the same one in the same colour, thought it was pink. They are great.

schroeder · 07/08/2010 19:59

I have a rolser(the rolls royce of shopping trolleysHmm) It's bright red and very useful, I can fit about 3 carrier bags worth in it and if my dd is with me I don't even have to pull it home.Grin
Funny thing is my Mum was horrified at the idea too-maybe they have skipped a generation? I do think they're great, but I'll admit to sweating a bit when I first took it out.
I'm definitely seeing more of them around now though.

JaMmRocks · 07/08/2010 20:00

I have the pink Ikea one, and before that I had the black one but I broke it.

Mine gets used for acrting everything down the road to the beach rather than shopping though.

KurriKurri · 07/08/2010 20:09

I have one - I was heavily mocked by my grown up Dc when I bought it, but I love it.

You will find there is a secret community of trolley owners out there. They acknowledge each other with a nod and a muttered 'nice trolley,' 'good colour' or 'plenty of room in that one' Grin

TotorosOcarina · 07/08/2010 20:10

this is cute!

ChoccyJules · 07/08/2010 20:10

I got one last week when I was in town without the toddler (and her useful pushchair!) and fed up of trailing bags round.

Past Times was closing down and had a funky 60's number which I really liked - bought it -then worried I was looking like a granny...but it's so much better for shopping!

MarthaQuest · 07/08/2010 20:19

I have a lovely mauve one with silver trim.

My dad and younger sisters sniggered at me when I used it whilst pregnant for lugging shopping back home but I didn't care.

I will use it again when dd grows out of push chair.

But you don't see any one else my age (30s) using them round my way (North Dorset) so I do have to be thick skinned.

greenbananas · 07/08/2010 20:19

I have a pull-along trolley. They are great! Don't care if they're not cool because they are so incredibly useful. I don't live in a trendy area, but have seen lots of women my age with them - probably because we are all skint and none of us have cars. (BTW, a pull-along trolley fits about one heavily loaded basket of supermarket shopping.)

nannyj · 07/08/2010 20:23

Everyone in Paris has one. So they must be good. Grin

venusandmars · 07/08/2010 20:28

I met a woman on the bus last Christmas with a suitcase on wheels. She'd been doing her Christmas shopping the week before and one of the presents she bought was a suitcase on wheels. She said it was the best thing ever - when everyone else was struggling with multiple bags, she'd put all hers in the suitcase.

It was so good that she'd bought another suitcase for all her normal shopping trips. I can't help thinking that a trolley would've been cheaper.

dexter73 · 07/08/2010 20:31

Very popular in Spain too.

mumdrivenmad · 07/08/2010 20:35

I've got two now, a four wheel one that my lovely mother bought for me after I had complicaions after surgery that meant I had a much longer recovery time, and now I have a pull along one that is a cool bag, ab fab for picnics with the kids, and for getting the frozen food home still frozen.
